When Do You Work Best?

Sun Oct 28, 2007 11:32 pm

I've always been a night owl; generally, if I have work to do I will start it around 10pm and carry on until 5 or 6am - I find it's so much quieter to work then and I'm more focused. I'm also pretty lucky in this case, because I only need a couple of hours sleep per night, a little hangover of my incredibly hyperactive youth.

I'm sure there must be others here who prefer to burn the midnight oil?

To me, there is no such thing as a time or environment favorable to work. Work sucks 24/7/365, and every fiber in my body screams "noooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!" when I have no choice but to get on with it. Works sucks in the morning, in the afternoon and at night; it sucks before, after and in between meals; it sucks from freezing cold to boiling hot and from spring to winter; it sucks from your first day at school to the day you retire. Work has been pissing me off, harassing and molesting me every single day since time immemorial. To me, work is the ultimate four-letter word, and even mentioning it irks me no end. In other words, work can my .  yuck   grumpy

Does that answer your question?  duck

Seriously, it's marginally easier late at night. My brain usually starts working around 10pm.  Smile

Not really, I'm a bit confused as to whether you like work or not?  Wink Big grin

I know how you feel, but sometimes you just have to get your head down and get on with it, even when you really don't want to... or you can distract yourself with airliners.net... a bit like I'm doing now!

Most jobs, I've preferred the typical 8-5, Monday through Friday type shifts. When I was working as a Corrections Officer, I preferred weekends and holidays.
I lift things up and put them down.

If it's enjoyable, it ain't work.

I'm just constitutionally incapable of enjoying something i HAVE to do. Even though I may love to do the exact same thing in my spare time. I know, I'm weird.

And it's true I'm completely fed up with my line of work, I'm considering a major career change right now.  Smile

Not true, I make a living from selling thousands of sticks of RAM on the internet. Boring, it may seem, but its exciting to watch the sales come in over the day, package them up and wave them goodbye in the mailvan! Satisfying, and I don't even need to leave the house Big grin

It depends what I'm doing, but generally I am a later evening/night person, although obviously school means I can't burn the midnight candle and have to work to the set times which is annoying but oh well.
In reality, I can't concentrate properly (especially in meaty subjects like maths and French or long double lessons) untill after lunch time, then my mind just seems to wake up..not a morning person unless I'm doing something really good or worthwhile, then I can get up early and/or go with little sleep.

I mean, if there's a flight to catch for example, I'll try and get the first flight (which can be say 6am sometimes) to get a full day wherever I'm going and/ or to get a hot breakfast instead of a drink and biscuits, even when it means waking up at say 3am after 2hrs sleep to get to the airport.

Generally, when I do work outside of school (during the weekends, holidays etc), I must admit that I'm a late worker. I'll sleep in untill 11am or so and then work somewhere between 2pm-8pm for doing things like homework, coursework and anything else like that, then I'll break for dinner and then continue if necessary from about 9pm all the way untill I'm too tired, which can be 2 or 3am in some points, then sleep in untill 11am or Midday etc etc

So in general, more of an evening person than a late nighter for work, but when I'm just relaxing, chatting on msn or just surfing the web during the holidays, it's much more of a late night/ early morning thing. My record was 9pm one day to 5am the next day, on the computer talking on msn while my insomnia record was 3 whole days without sleep !!

Ah the joys of being a teenager...

Im an ATC'er by trade (one of the top 10 busiest airports in the world, Woot!)

I find personally I work best in the 7-8AM range when we're super busy. When im working 2 arrival parallel runways (Tower for this one...I do Tower/Ground/Clearance) with both finals solid 3-5 miles seperation to 30 miles, taxing the north runway clear to cross my runway...man I am having a ball. Im on my toes, moving around, and moving some airplanes about. Now when I am working one runway by myself, with only a couple planes, I get bored very easily. (Im hyper I guess).

My favorite time to work is a mid-day departure push on ground. I like moving planes for some reason on the ground more than in the air.

I work best alone, and in the morning. Almost everytime I have worked with someone else (or a group), it was always a waste of time. Nobody wants to do the work, and you know who gets stuck with it? People like me. I cringe when I have to work in a group (and yet, everybody else is relieved they can, gee, I wonder why  sarcastic  ). If there is an option to go solo, I'll take it.

Disclaimer, I am pulling your leg, ATC can be very helpful for us pilots, as well as being our scapegoats, somebody to harass, among many other, very, very, useful utilisation's  smile

Ah yes, ample tea and preferably coffee is always a help I find when boring work really makes you lag.

In those situations I almost never go to sleep the previous night, to be honest I just don't trust myself to get up in time, plus I rely on public transport to get to the airport, so I usually have to overnight in the terminal anyway. I never had a problem with late nights at school though myself, I'd usually got to sleep at 5am and then get up at 7:30am, making up a bit at the weekends. Even now, if I have a lot of work at university I'll switch to only sleeping alternate nights, 8 hours in 48, not 24 - it really doesn't bother me, as I said in the thread starter, it's a positive hangover from being a very hyperactive child who virtually never slept a wink!

I particularly like going for a walk up onto the local moors at night when at home - the absence of street lights means that you can see the heavens lit up in all their glory when the skies are clear. I can often just lay there all night staring up at them... great for thinking over difficult and important situations too.
