Porter Wagoner Passes

Tue Oct 30, 2007 5:19 am

One of the "old time" country singers who helped launch Dolly Parton's carrer (as far as I am concerned) had died. Porter Wagoner was 80. Yahoo is reporting Dolly sang for him in his last hours. I could not bring myself to click on the story because I thought it was so sad.

Also called the "last defender of the duck's ass hair cut", he did indeed launch Dolly's career. She was a member of the Porter Wagoner Show for many years.

Another great name in Hillbillie Heaven ,may his soul rest in peace.

I do enjoy Porter's tunes. I enjoy classic country & western music. I do not enjoy new country at all and I hate the way the the classics are rarely played in most markets. Country music today is nothing like it was in the good old days. Today it is pop in a cowboy hat. Every year fewer traditional artists are left and fewer people even know what real country & western is all about. I really like all the drinkin' and cheatin' songs.

Preach on Brother Falstaff. If I want pop and rock I'll listen to pop and rock (which I do), but if I want country I want country and not country dressed up as pop and rock. This is why, more and more, when I listen to radio music I listen to Internet radio stations instead of terrestrial radio. My favorite Internet radio stations are the ones that I can program myself, my favorite of which is Pandora. I can create a station and then indicate preferences so that if I want a classic country station I can program it so that it plays classic country and not the dreadful contemporary stuff that is pop masquerading as country. Porter Wagoner, rest in peace.

I used to have to watch this show every weekend we went over to my grandmother's house.

And Hee Haw....

And Lawrence Welk...

And those rancid gospel music shows on Sunday morning.

same with me, C&W used to be big in Germany as well and had a lot of Radio time, that vanished to next to nuthin', all they play is Shania Twain and other country pop these days.

I have a big collection of the old stuff, starting from the very early thirties and thanks to a little label here in Germany, Bear Family Records, I can add constantly new CD's , sometimes weird stuff like the Sun outtakes from Cash recording sessions but then, you have to be a true fan to enjoy that. Anyway, I can make my own program for weeks.

What really makes me sad is that we hardly get any artists on tour over here anymore. Gone are the good old days in the 80s, when we had the annual packet show, not only in Frankfurt. My wife and I had to travel to Hamburg in March for the only concert Kris Kristoffersen gave in Germany. To see and hear Gillian Welch, one has to go all the way to Glasgow.

Even good old Willie, who used to come to Europe at least once a year is not seen here anymore. But then, he is over 70...

It sure seems like we've lost most of the good old Country Singers, and Porter's passing adds another name to the ever growing list.

May he rest in eternal piece.  tombstone

BTW, it is true that Porter launched Dolly Parton's career, and when she left the Porter Wagoner Show, she wrote the song "I Will Always Love You" for Porter.
