Worst TV Commercials - November Edition

Thu Nov 01, 2007 1:37 am

I am so sick of these commercials I am about to boycott TV completely.

(trivia: that singing is being done by buy.com's CEO Scott Blum himself. No wonder he didn't want his face shown.)

Do it. The only think you'll regret is that you hadn't done it earlier.

I haven't watched TV for seven years now, and I know I'll never, ever go back to it. TV is 99.99% garbage, like the crap you posted above. If I want to watch a movie, I rent a DVD (100 yards from my house). When I want news - all the time, basically - there is this great invention called the internet, and another one called Adblock.

Believe me, you will feel immensely better without the continuous onslaught of stupidity and pointlessness that your TV subjects you to daily.

So back on topic, I can't really contribute, because I haven't seen any TV ad in years.  Cool

For those unable to muster the self control to stay away from the stupidity and pointlessness, staying away from TV is good option.

For the rest of us, there is actually some decent stuff on television.

Pick up a refurb Tivo from their website for $49... when you get it, begin playing back a show, then hit Select + Play + Select + 30 + Select....you've now enabled 30 commercial skip! PM me for details if you decide to go that route, it is WELL WORTH IT!

What I hate about TV:

-Sports: I couldn't care less. In fact, I don't give a shit. Sports don't exist for me, period.
-Advertising: Self-explanatory.
-Weather forecasts: in Belgium, the weather only varies between mildly pleasant and mildly unpleasant. I don't give a damn about the details.
-Advertising: Apply directly to your colon. Apply directly to your colon. Apply directly to your colon.
-News: "We're interrupting our usual programming for this breaking news: Bimbo Celeb is a slut. We'll be back with more on her sluttiness after this important message from our sponsors".
-Music: Yo mothafucka, boom boom scratch scratch, spread your legs you ho, yo!
-Did I mention advertising?

Add to this the universally idiotic game shows, advertising, Big Brothers, singing contests, advertising, cartoons, religious crap, beauty (dumb blonde) pageants, advertising, endless and pointless soap operas, movies interrupted every 3 minutes by advertising, cheesy sitcoms, and advertising, and there you have 99.99% of television.

True, there's also Leno, O'Brien, Ferguson, Family Guy, and others. But to watch those live, I'd have to stay up in the middle of the night. And watch advertising.

The internet and broadband take care of that and do a terrific job of separating the grain from the chaff.  Smile

For fiction, "Heroes" and "LOST" are two excellent shows that I enjoy, but I'm more of a documentary watcher. There are plenty of very good documentaries on Discovery, History, Biography channels etc. If you're a sports fan, then there's good live coverage of most popular sports also; I watch Premier League on Setanta Channel and Fox Soccer Channel. And as far as advertisements go...that's the beauty of TiVo.

Public Proadcasting as well. Advertising drives me nuts too, but the sports that I watch the commercials are at max 75 seconds. Tennis and Basketball, well Soccer is great too, only a couple of commercials during Halftime.

Conversely, this is the best ad I've ever seen:

The two commercials I hate the most on TV right now are Ovaltine commercials (they all need to be beaten!) and the pill commercial where the woman is sitting on the beach texting her friend about birth control. She is wasting her time texting her friend about shorter periods with all the man candy scoping her out? I don't EVER take my phone to the beach! I also hate the female product commercial about tesing for yeast infections or some such thing. If something is coming out of my body the color of what is on the stick, I will IMMEDIATLY go to my doctor instead of going to the store to buy some test kit.

Foppishbum: I have not seen Smilin' Bob for a long time, thankfuly. He is another one I would gladly pay to see beaten with a swatch from the willow tree!

Yes, we just voted on two state-wide measures here in Oregon. One of them started off with a conversation between two people:

Woman: Have you figured out the ballot yet?

Man: Everything but Measure 50.

First off, we have mail in ballots where you fill in the circle next to "yes" if you want the measure to pass or "no" if you want the measure to fail. What is so hard to figure out about that? Second: WE ONLY HAVE TWO BALLOT MEASURES! Anyway, the commercial ends with:

Man: I know how I'm voting, I'm voting No on 50!

Woman: You mean you haven't voted yet?

I hate election commercials.....

These are clips from the new WSIB Workplace Safety campaign. (WSIB is Ontario's "Workman's Comp").
Their commercials have gotten more and more, um, bold in the last few months.

The one's not so bad...

This one's a bit more bold...

...but I have to change the channel whenever this one comes on.

I really hate all those personal injury claim TV commercials. They drive me insane. Unfortunately I can't seem to find any originals to post, but you know the sort of thing I'm talking about. Here's a spoof one I found just to demonstrate how ridiculous they are.

iStarted a thread about this over in Civ-av, some of the posts by others were great!

Three great ones...the first is not real I'm assuming, but hilarious (it's a jetBlue spoof) the second is 3 ikea adverts, the last 30 second bit is brilliant! And the third one...you'll have to see for yourself. Note: NSFW!

I also will make time for The Office and Mad Men (and usually Nip/Tuck)

As for commercials, I really hate the one that says "Your dreams miss you" featuring the Abe Lincoln guy and groundhog.

The Geico gecko truly annoys me, but it's such a successful icon that I think it will be around for a while.

Those Kashi health food commercials wherein smarmy, patronizing asshole "Kashi employees" go looking for the things that go into Kashi foods. One of them actually opens with the line "Sunlight kicks flourescent light's butt." Who wrote that copy? Prince?

Hey Kashi! What exactly is the process used to take the "awesome foods" these people find "in nature" and render them to ground-up particle board?
