Places To Visit In India?

Thu Nov 01, 2007 3:28 pm

I am planning a quick one week trip in India and was wondering if people could recommend from the list below one destination that I should go and see. I have already been to Chennai and Delhi before, so not interested in going there.

1. Cochin
2. Bangalore
3. Mumbai
4. Hydrabad

or is there any other places that people can recommend. I will be flying from Colombo.

Although you have been to Delhi did you make it down to Agra and visit the Taj Mahal? I would definitely recommend that if you haven't.

Bangalore is a big city and there are some things to do there but I would bet your best choice would be Mumbai out of those 4 cities.

I would suggest trying Dehra Dun and the surrounding areas in the foothills of the Himalayas (north of Delhi). Lots of clean air, beautiful scenery, different cultures, and good hiking to boot.

Big cities are about all the same for me anymore. Overcrowded and polluted. (Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai).

I've heard that Goa can also be a nice spot to visit, but haven't been there yet. Pondicherry was OK, but not worth a week.

how about Himchal Pradesh? if you can do I suggest going to nearby nepal, particularly Pokhara.

Everywhere you go in India, the culture is unique, the food is different and the "historical" sites are plentiful, but it depends on what your main purpose is there, what are you interested to see?

I assume you've seen Agra, since it's pretty close to Delhi.

In that case, forget everything else, and go to Jaisalmir, in western Rajasthan. Of all the places I've been to in India, that's the place I loved the most.

You have a fantastic walled city with beautiful architecture, tombs out in the desert, incredible sunsets, and the people are wonderful. I really can't say enough good about the place.

The only downside is that as it's only 50 miles or so from the Pakistan border, Indian authorities do not allow civilian airliners into the city's airport (at least that was true a few years ago when I went there). So you will have to fly to Jodhpur and drive to Jaisalmir.

If you like nature, visit Bandhavgarh National Park.

BEAUTIFUL scenery, and the highest concentration of wild tigers in India.

.....also, if you don't mind potentially dying, could always visit the Indian side of the Sundarbans  Wink

From your List Mumbai has nothing worth tourist attraction wise to view.

Mysore has good Architecture & is close to Bangalore.

My choice would be GOA & Rajasthan.
