Even though I live in Arizona who does not have Daylight Savings Time, I really hate it. What is the point of having it, does it change anything if we just got rid of it.

With DST now lasting 8 months out of the year, it's usefulness is lost, IMO. Maybe we should just alter the timezones, or deal with the time zones like they are, or people can wake up earlier. Like they saying goes: Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.

Of course Arizona does cause a problem because airlines have to adjust their red-eye schedule for flights to/from here during DST.

Even though it is very hard to tell, the sun was weird because of it's position. My body and mind just weren't used to feeling the sun where it was.. Now when I walk to my bus stop, the sun won't be near rising and won't start until I get to school (an hour and a half later)..

I really don't care about DST. No real point to it, in my opinion. Just another reason for me to sleep in another hour.

The one advantage I will give to going back to standard time, is that when I drive to school, I won't have to worry about the sun in my eyes when I pull out of the garage.

That would be on the other end of the year...

When daylight savings time ends, there's more sun in the mornings, and less in the evenings.

I actually wish we had DST all year. I like having more sun in the evenings - I hate getting out of work, and having it be dark already.

I live at 43 degrees North and no matter which way you cut it, we only have so much sunlight per day in the dark half of the year. I prefer to wake up with the sun rising.

At our house, depending on work schedules, we get up at 06:00 or 06:30. For the last month we've been going through the entire morning activities in the dark. One particularly dark morning (weather-wise) a few weeks ago, when I arrived at the office, I felt like I'd been called into work in the middle of the night. Even close to 08:00 it still looked like night.

This morning we were up at 06:00 EST and it was a bit of a disappointment. Still seemed like the middle of the night, although later, the drive to work was brighter and there was less danger of hitting bike riders and joggers wearing dark clothing.

I wish they'd end DST earlier rather than later. Is there really much evidence of energy savings? I can't see any energy savings on my personal level.

Anyway, I don't think we should get rid of the DST. Even here, sun would rise too freaking early in the morning in summer, and that would be even worse up there. I think those would be wasted daytime hours. And I like it when the sun sets at 21.30h in June and it isn't dark until 22.30h or so...

The Navajo do in fact observe DST, the rest of the state doesn't. The reason is an agreement with Mexico (the Mexican state of Sonora specifically), to facilitate commercial traffic through the two states. IIRC, the AZ border has the highest commercial traffic of all other border states.

According to your profile, you live in Sarnia. That has more to do with your western location. But according to Environment Canada, your sunrise today should have been at 07:08 and setting at 17:18. Compared to me in Ottawa (at 45.25ºN), our sunrise was at 06:47 and set at 16:46. Unfortunately, no matter daylight savings, you'll always have a later morning. I can only imagine what it's like for those in Thunder Bay. According to EC, their sun didn't rise until 07:48. Which means it was about 08:45 until a couple of days ago. Ouch!

Hi LH423:

Thanks for your reply.

After I posted, I wished I'd left my latitude out, since I didn't develop the point very well.

I used to travel to Morrisburg (45.9N,75.2W), roughly 700 km east of here, and the difference in sunset times was quite obvious.

Hawai'i also does not participate in Daylight Savings Time.

All it changes here is the times of shows on SOME TV channels.....which is slightly irritating since some change and some don't.

The positive is that NFL games now start at 8am instead of 7am and college fottball at 7:30am instead of 6:30am (Yikes!).

Thank God I live in the tropics and sunrise/sunset don't move very much 8-)

Why don't they just stick with one time and be done with it? If DST works out, just stick with it. Didn't California or some state decide to have DST all round the year?

Or just stay with the standard time, and move up your business hours accordingly. Instead of staying open 9am-5pm, change it to 8am-4pm.

I fail to understand how changing the time twice a year makes any kind of difference now.

Thunder Bay is a bit of an odd duck. It really should be in Central time so the sun rises and sets very late. In the summer, it is light until about 11 pm. But as you saw, in the winter, the sun doesn't rise until 9 am. It does mean that the sun doesn't set until 5 pm though.

In Seattle, on December 21, the sun rises at 7:55 and sets at 4:18. 8h 22m of daylight.

In Thunder Bay, on December 21, the sun rises at 8:45 and sets at 5:04. 8h 19m of daylight. Not very different except for Seattle's daylight starting earlier!
But that was when I ruled the world

Incidentally, I had my first daylight savings mishap today. I woke up this morning and immediately thought I had overslept because the sun was so bright. It took me a few minutes to realize I still had another 45 minutes before I had to be up. On the other hand, I always think it's later than it really is at night. I imagine it'll take me a few more days to get used to it being dark by 5p.

True - but it played havoc when dealing with the mainland. When I lived on Maui, my job involved dealing with people mostly located back east. I didnt' start until 10A, which meant for six months, I had 1-2 hours to accomplish all of my calls, transactions and emails before the east coast went dark.

And by the same token, here it required people to delay their evening events by an hour. Back in the 1960s, AZ did try DST for one year and so many people were unhappy with it that they went back to Mountain Standard Time the next year.

AZ did try DST for one year and so many people were unhappy with it that they went back to Mountain Standard Time the next year.

The way I see it: AZ is on 'Pacific Time' during the summer months. AZ is then on Mountain Time during the winter months. If AZ is always on Mountain Time, then it would change clocks too, but AZ does not change clocks. For example...

Summer: PHX is the same time as SEA. (Pacific Time)
Winter: PHX is the same time as DEN. (Mountain Time)

Hope that makes some sense.

Not really.

Arizona is always on Mountain STANDARD Time. It is true that the rest of the Mountain time zone is on the same time when it is not daylight savings. And it is true that Mountain Standard Time = Pacific Daylight Time when DST is in effect. But Arizona is not considered to be on Pacific Time. It's just the same time as Pacific Time during DST.  Smile

No, it's assinine. It's dark here (in Alaska) anyway.

We (Alaska) should opt out of the silliness like Arizona and Indiana . . .

Quoting Aloha73G (Reply 36):
Hawai'i also does not participate in Daylight Savings Time.

Hawaii is tropical and the length of day is more constant and DST really isn't necessary as the sunrise and sunset change about an hour or so and that is it. The only tropical Island in the North American Region is Cuba

In Alaska it changes so much the time that most of us would consider day in the winter is dark there and it is the opposite is the case where the day is nearly 24 hours.

It's most useful for latitudes between the Tropic of Cancer (23.5 N) and 50-55 N and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 S) to 50-55 S

Do you have "Geoclock" ? I sometimes use that program to watch the terminator tracking across the map of southern Ontario as the sun sets.

I like this website and you can also change the date and time to see the terminator at that date, as well as the sun's overhead location

CNN has an amusing report on a consequence of the daylight savings time switchover.

Here in Houston we now have the crazy experience of a 745am sunrise in mid March and early November because of this. On cloudy days street lights are on well past 9am during these extended DST periods.
January no longer has the latest sunrise in most U.S. locations. Reminds me of when I lived in ANC, only I am now 3300 miles south of there! Complete nonsense.
