Men's Jewelry, Your Opinion?

Sun Nov 04, 2007 9:33 am

I've always just worn a watch, but after browsing this year's Christmas catalog I feel temped to buy. What is your opinion on men's jewelry? Is it ok to wear? Thanks for your input.

No jewelry for me.  no  A nice wristwatch is all I'll accept. On a guy, any ornament looks awkward IMO.

Nope. A man should not wear any sort of jewellery whatsoever. If he has to, maybe a wedding ring, but absolutely nothing else.

I think people should just be allowed to wear what they want to wear, if they want to wear a silver bracelet thing like shown above then they should be able to...

I only wear a wristwatch though..

I don't think there's anything gay about it - so long as you're wearing something which is masculine and not blatantly feminine. I don't myself, however a lot of men wear stud earrings and various various piercings, I do though have various bracelets/pendants which I wear.

Wrist watch, wedding band, Academy Class Ring, nothing else.

Personal choice however.

It's not "gay" to wear jewelry. That's assinine.

I do wonder, occasionally, about the sanity of the meatheads putting multiple holes in the bodies so they can install various and sundry types of "body jewelry" . . .  crazy  {where's the emoticon for ridiculous?}

Woman's opinion here:

I don't find it attractive or sexy when men wear any jewelry other than a wedding band, a watch, and MAYBE a class ring.

My girlfriends feel the same way,

Sorry.

Pardon me while I cringe....

Other than a watch, I really don't wear much jewelry. I've got an Eagle Scout ring I bought years back that I don't wear because some days it fits, other days it doesn't (I can't get it resized because of the material it is made of). I've also got a silver chain with an Eagle Scout charm on it.

I'll admit my jewelry thing is cuff links. I've got about 10 sets of cuff links I've amassed over the last 10-12 years. I've only ever bought one set of them (A pair that look like roulette wheels and have a little metal ball in them which I bought earlier this year.), the rest were given to me. About 12 years back, I was working for a company that did casino themed parties for companies and clubs and the uniform was black pants, a tuxedo shirt and black tie. My friend who got me the job gave me my first set of cuff links and a set of tuxedo studs (Not everyone who worked for the company wore the studs or even cuff links, choosing instead to use the buttons already on the shirt.). A few years later, I got my first dress shirt with French cuffs and my grandfather gave me a number of old cuff links he had.

I don't think there is a problem with men wearing jewellery, its quite common in some ethnicity's. Wearing a chain, ring and or bracelet are quite common.

I wear a ring (not a marriage ring) and a chain.

Personally, I normally wear nothing, unless it's a fraternity pin (which is referred to as a jewel(s), never as jewelry) or studs and cufflinks with my tux. I've never had the habit of wearing a watch.

You shouldn't be worried about what others would think. Jewelry is really just about making it work. Your sexuality and gender are not the determining factors here. Some people with talent and a good eye for fashion can pull it off. Most people can't. I think you should be optimistic about it and give it a shot irrespective of what anybody else would think. You know you want to do it, that's why you made this thread in the first place.

No, that doesn't bother me in the slightest. The only reservation I have is that it does look a bit daft on someone who is 50-plus years old, and who looks it too. But live and let live.

I wear a watch, no rings, I wear a necklace from my religion, a cross, usually when I travel just as a religious thing for protection type of thing.

If I get married, I'll wear that also.

Otherwise I see no reason to wear anything else, maybe another ring just to have on the other hand.

I wear a watch and sometimes a Surfer Bangle/Bracelet thing.

Much more than that and you look like a complete chav (Especially if the item is silver or gold and from Argos)

On the piecings front, men and piercings don't go. I have a friend who has, 3 piercings on each ear, his tounge, his nose and his lip pierced and I make fun of him because of it, when on an exchange trip in spain, me and him were staying with the same people and I would always tell him to make sure he doesn't touch the sheets, or he'd be wearing them home! Funny thing was, on the first night, he swallowed the top ball and bar of his tounge stud and the next day we had to go trudging around Salamanca for a piercing shop so he could buy a new one.

I have two piercings in my right ear and one in my left ear, but I haven't worn anything in them in several years. I used to wear a glass eye (from a doll) in one hole for shock value, but I lost it.

I don't have a problem with men wearing rings, but I don't wear them myself because the largest size rings most stores stock is a 12. I wear a size 14 on the ring finger of my left hand and a size 15 on the ring finger of my right hand, and I don't have a strong enough desire to wear a ring to go to the trouble of custom-ordering one.

I can't stand necklaces on myself, but I don't mind them on other guys. One tip though: Never wear more than one at a time.

I agree. Although my buddy Steve has one of those metal holes through his ears and uses that to support a Dudley lock. But the man can throw down a mean bassline, it's part of his look I suppose.

I personally wear a wristwatch, I have a gold chain, as well as a cross on a seperate gold chain.

For me, a watch is about it, but now I don't even have that, as I use an old pager (with no service) on belt as my "watch"....it's thus out of the way and doesn't get damaged when I'm working on projects...

No wedding ring yet, but that would be only other item...never had a class ring, but that is ok for those who do...piercings are just so wrong....and even guys who have that one ear (or worse, two) thing are, to me, not real guys, but trying to be feminine.

I used to wear my High School class ring along with a watch, but having to pass through a metal detector at my last job twice a day caused me to put the ring in a box. So now its just a watch.

Me, I wear a watch most all of the time. As a mechanic, I don't wear other jewelery for safety reasons. When going somewhere (with the family, ect.) I wear my wedding ring. I will sometimes wear my late fathers' wedding ring on my right hand for sentimental reasons. I also have a ring that Mrs Torquewrench gave me that I wear once in a while. Other than that, I have a lapel pin that reflects a very signifigant part of my life that I wear rather often. Check my signature line and see if you can figure out what the lapel pin is. 10 points for the winner, 5 for runner up!

For myself, I only wear a watch (stainless steel diver watch) and, if I'll get married again, a wedding ring (but just a plain gold band).
For certain trades, a simple earring is a tradition though: E.g. sailors used to wear a simple golden earring after they crossed Cape Horn.
In the german speaking countries, when journeymen of certain trades (e.g. house carpentry, masonry roofers etc.) went on the traditional three year traveling time after qualifying from apprentice to journeyman, they used to wear again a simple golden earring. The reason was that this earring was in the olden days considered the last emergency reserve. Should the journeyman die far away from home, the earring would pay for his funeral.
Today quite a few journeymen are taking up the tradition of travelling again and wear the traditional guild dress.

I wear a necklace of wooden beads (Because of a loved one. It means something to me, and I almost never take it off.) and also a wrist watch, but it's a Citizen Eco-Drive Skyhawk, which I feel is not jewelry.

Bracelets and things are fine, as long as there aren't too many and they aren't hideous. I don't like body piercings so much.

No jewelry of any kind for me - I inheritied my Grandad's signet ring, but I just felt stupid wearing it, so I gave it to my brother, he wears it.

Of course, one is prepared to make an exception for grand occasions - a multi-layer diamond and sapphire tiara is de rigeur with the tulle and ruched taffeta full length ballgown with plunging decolleté... just something I wear round the house, you know...
