Hero To Zero?

Sun Nov 04, 2007 3:24 pm

I have a couple of examples of people who were one-time heroes of mine, who seem to have "sold out".

Henry Winkler (aka The Fonz) - The uber-cool hero of "Happy Days", is reduced to appearing as Captain Hook in our local Panto. Why?

After a long spell out of the country working in Dubai, I returned to see the shop windows of Marks & Spencer adorned with pictures Bryan Ferry modeling their clothes. Bryan Ferry, the mega-cool lead singer of Roxy Music, now modeling clothes for M&S. Where did it all go wrong?

Maybe I picked the wrong heroes? no

Have any of your heroes fallen from grace in your opinion?

Odd about Henry Winkler since he seems to have had a successful career in production. Maybe the part you saw him in was just something he liked doing?

I doubt he's "reduced" to appearing in Panto, whatever it is. He's made appearances in a whole bunch of stuff:

He was hilarious in "Arrested Development" as the family's lawyer.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

He's not allowed to earn a living? Do you not think you are being just a touch unreasonable?

Panto:

Quote:
Nowadays, a pantomime occasionally pulls off a coup by engaging a guest star with an unquestionable thespian reputation, as was the case with the Christmas 2004 production of Aladdin that featured Sir Ian McKellen as Widow Twankey, which he reprised in the 2005 production at the Old Vic theatre in London.

Last year we had a performance of Cinderella starring Patrick Duffy* and Susan Hampshire. Wow!

My shock is really based on him appearing in panto to begin with, and secondly coming to my small, provincial town of questionable repute.

*Maybe it was all a dream. However, he was widely quoted in the media as saying how much he hated it.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, I certainly wouldn't deny anyone their right to earn a living. Frankly, I'm just shocked that The Fonz (for it is he) is appearing in panto. In Woking.  Wow!

I have visions of him walking around Woking town centre and men of a certain age walking up to him and saying "Heeeeyyyy!" in that Fonz-like way.

It really shouldn't happen to one's heroes. no

Oh, I don't know. Pantomime is simply brilliant. Where else around the world do kids get introduced to the theatre in such numbers? That's why a lot of American actors love the idea of it, a play that is kind of aimed at children, but with lots of (usually filthy) jokes for the parents? It's an actor's dream, especially from countries where there's no equivalent. Kevin Spacey keeps saying he wants to do one too.

The ones up there are good at least. About the most famous person who appearded down here was when Hunter from the Gladiators was Jack in Jack and the Bean Stalk in Torquay in about 1996. Since then it always has someone from Gemini FM (The local radio station).

But did it "happen" to him? Didn't he have a choice in the matter? Wasn't it a conscious decision on his part to play in panto?

But couldn't he have done better than ... Woking?  crazy  duck

I'm sure it was. I can't see how anyone could force him to do it against his will.

I would have hoped so!

Understandable error. He thought it was a typo, and someone was asking him if he was interested in Working...
