Question For The Day

Mon Nov 05, 2007 4:14 pm

I was looking at some old posts, and there was one about member's signatures from May of this year. One (from ORDRyan28) said "What would you attempt if you knew you couldn't fail?" I thought this was a fascinating question, so I thought I'd throw it out to the membership. I've been thinking about this for ages, and I haven't come up with anything yet...

So, gang....

What WOULD you do if you knew you couldn't fail?

My answer...hmm....flying? Lame, I know, and not some stupid "go to the airport, wait in line, get on plane, eat 3 peanuts, fly 4 hours with 21" pitch, land at crappy airport" style, but really FLY...like a bird.

I'm not a hippy...

I came up with several, some personal, some societal....
How about develop cures for cancer, Aids, diabetes.....restore the Concorde program (but affordable)...? Make racism a thing of the past?

On a personal note...enjoy a committed relationship..

Like bring back a decomposed zombie-dead for a servant or more along the lines of a loved one back all fresh and new?

Loved one, fresh and new and living and not dead.

Although the zombie "undead" thing would be kinda cool, in a horror flick kind of way.

Yeah, it'd probably be pointless to have them clean up the house.

And I'd attempt to be the best person I could be. That would be pretty neat.

I misread the question to be "Would you still attempt it if you knew you'd fail?"

Thought that was a tough one, and I pondered it for a while... with no result.

Bollocks.

Lots and lots of stuff...  Silly But not many things I wouldn't do if I could without being sure of a positive outcome... In fact I can't think of any.

I don't think it's as interesting if one knows one cannot fail. It'd be nice in some circumstances, surely... But more often than not, it's really quite useless to know.

I know one thing I wouldn't do if I knew I'd not fail: Kill myself.

You should do it then. There is almost no way failing to play the lottery.
As for myself, if I knew I could not fail, I would go WINNING the bloody lottery...  Silly  Wink

Seriously, I don't find the question overly fascinating. If the plan includes something beyond the laws of physics, it would be more like "what would you do if you had a free wish".

But if this wish is possible within the laws of physics, then you should go for it. Failing is an essential part of life. If you refrain from doing something just because think you may fail, then you have failed already before you even started.

stand up comedians and a.netters seem to have at least one thing in common.

I can't think of anything serious that I would try if I knew it would have a positive outcome. There are lots of things that I will not try because I can't afford it and don't want to get hooked. I tried that with flying. I was having a great time and then ran out of money. One of these days I'll go back to it.

Lets hear one... I'll tell everyone a good one. Three years ago I was dating a woman who told me that she said she would never date a man with a station wagon and that I had two of them. She was a mortgage broker, I should have known not to trust her. I wonder what she is driving now. Probably a wagon and the sad part is that now I have no wagons.

Here's the top of the list right here. The guy I had been with for 2 years decided to propose to me, but I had been feeling odd about the relationship for the last few months, so I turned him down. Yeah. I told him that I really cared about him but I couldn't make a commitment like that with the way I was feeling. So he decided we needed to go our seperate ways. About a month or so after this I found out that he had spent the last 6 months of our relationship cheating on me with a close friend of mine. That's right, he proposed to me while he was sleeping with mary. And I asked him about this, and he said he was in love with me, he just got drunk one night and ended up sleeping with her. for 6 months. yeah. make sense of that.

oh, one other thing that I would do if I knew I couldn't fail! - become an astronaut!

My mom went out with a guy in 1968, who took her to her senior prom (he graduated the year earlier). Four days later he married another woman, that he graduated with. Last summer I was at a bar in Pittsburgh with my mom and dad and mom spotted him. She asked him what happened. Just as mom figured, he got this girl pregnant so he married her. He was still with her.

Skygirl -

If it makes you feel any better - my Mom was engaged to this guy back in the day. She met my Dad during this period while on a Braniff 707 and they got to talking. She found out a few months later that her fiance was "batting for the other team" so to speak. Needless to say, that ended their engagement. She fell in love with my Dad and they were married a short time later. That was 32 years ago.

I too have had some hard breakups; they can be a real bitch. Just know that all good things come in time.  Smile

Blah, I don't have many breakups but it takes me 1+ year to get over them...just reaching the 6 month halfway mark with my ex-bf and I'm still not over it and still don't feel ready for dating or anything else.  Sad
