Why Do Spammers Spam?

Mon Nov 05, 2007 8:46 pm

Why is it that after proscution of spammers and peoples anger toward spammers they still continue to flood your inbox with the dumbest things? Why is it that even after websites like fakechecks.org and numerous others that make people aware of scams, scammers still continue to try and scam people?
I probably get on a daily an average, 4 emails from people across the world that are dying of cancer or any other tragic stuff and need to leave their $31,000,000,000 with me.
About 5 or more from start your own business at home and make $100,000 a month for under $20 for the starter kit
About 15 or more for young horny teens with websites that adress looks like this--> http://zxcso.384.oo *links don't work*
About 10 or more from people up in Canada offering Viagra for like $0.08 a pill with websites that also read http://hjasasjdashjdjksd.web.cn

What is it that goes on in these peoples mind? Haven't they heard that it's ANNOYING!
Yeah and thats just on my yahoo email that promies to block all spam and blah blah..but I'm still getting it.
Can anyone shed some light on why these low lives still send spam even though we hate them?

Because, as the saying goes, there is a sucker born every minute. There will always be someone (or a group of them) who, despite all the publicity the scams get, just haven't gotten the message yet.
I lift things up and put them down.

Because the 0.01% of recipients who respond make them money. And yes, that's an official statistic as reported in Time Magazine, January 2007.

Even if the links don't work, don't ever EVER click on them. It will just confirm that your e-mail address is still active, which will enable spammers to send more and more junk to your inbox.

This goes for everyone: if you receive spam in your inbox, don't click on any link and just delete the message.

It seems jail and heavy fines don't deter a lot of spammers. I have an idea what might give someone second thoughts before they start sending junk emails.

Have a pc terminal with an email account without any spam block on. Let the email get thousands and thousands of spams and then have the spammer sit down at the pc and one by one open, close and delete each and every spam.

I'm sure that person would think twice before sending another spam.

I got that alot from some very racist and narrow minded people in my first year at my university spreading their BS propaganda. Our email system can let you send an email to the whole campus with just one click. What made things worse is that it started a war between other people so everybody would hit reply and of course it replied to the whole campus. It was chaos.

I gave the spammers a "cease and desist" warning, and that I would take action, but of course, they didn't care. So...

While everybody was bitching back and forth and IT was getting flooded with complaints I had a bright idea, What I did was grab these spammer's emails and subscribed them to all sorts of nasty, disturbing crap, like REALLY nasty. So for an hour I was copy-pasting their emails to said disturbing sources, and subscribed them to about 200 of those nasty websites.

Since that one day in 2004, we have NEVER had that problem again.

Too bad I never got credit for it though, o well...

Because the 0.01% of recipients who respond make them money. And yes, that's an official statistic as reported in Time Magazine, January 2007.

The spammers usually get a fee for every lead they provide to the people who contracted with them to send out the emails. I read in a computer magazine that a spammer would get $25.00 for each lead for a mortgage company, if they send out 500.000 emails and get 100 returns, the spammer earns $2500.00. Since their overhead is usually nothing, all they need in a high speed internet connection and many work out of their homes, so this is almost all profit.

So it’s basically for the easy and fast money they make. Multiply this by the number of spam emails they send out and some spammers are known to make very good money. They feel all they are doing is some form of advertising along the lines of junk mail and in their minds it is legal, some spammers have even challenged their arrests by claiming if junk mail is allowed, then spam is the same and should be allowed.

To avoid prosecution, many spammers in the US use host sites in China and Russia so the spam emails cannot be traced back to them.

Almost all the emails for drugs are from offshore sites in the Caribbean, even if they claim they are from Canada, the drugs are usually counterfeits from India, which has companies who specialize in duplicating drugs and depending on the Indian drug company some can be of dubious quality.

As previously posted the only way to stop spams is not do any business with them, but all it takes in one in 10,000 for spammers to make money.

I read in a computer magazine that spammers have programs that take every word in the dictionary and every name and all the internet service providers extensions, ie smith at .aol.com, smith at msn.com, smith at yahoo.com etc. and combine these words with numbers and they can send out 500.000 to a million emails a day like smith201 at aol.com, smith201 at msn.com etc. (I left the @ sign off so it doesn’t trigger the automatic web site link). If they come back as undeliverable then the program y knows that this is not a valid address, if it does not come back, then it knows that the email has been delivered and it is a valid address. These programs work 24/7 to find new email addresses. They then sell these new addresses to other companies or swap them among themselves.

Another way to find valid email addresses are spyware programs that are downloaded unknowingly by someone surfing on some dubious websites like porno sites, they are known to be loaded with spyware programs or trojan horses. These programs read all the email addresses in your address book and report back to the spammer and sometimes can take over the computer. I read that about 25% of spam emails are sent by home and business computers that have been hijacked by these programs, they work in the background and the computer user is totally unaware of this.

I also read where one person used a basic name and number combination when setting up their email address and within a week the spammers found it and his mailbox was flooded with spams. The best way to avoid this is to break up the email addresses using non works and numbers like smi201th at aol.com, the longer the address the harder it is to find.

I myself had to drop our basic email names because the porno spammers got both my and my wife’s email address and we were flooded with these emails. We now have difficult addresses and this has helped keep the spammers away.

Some ways to protect yourselves.

A lot of ISP’s allow sub mail boxes under the primary email address, the trick is to set up a very difficult primary address, but never use it, use the sub email addresses you set up for your emails, but also setting them up as difficult names, then if the sub box is found by the spammers then that sub box can be shut off and another one opened. I have separate sub boxes set up for different areas, I have one I only use for online shopping, another for personal use and another for business use plus a few extras I use if I have to give my email address out to where I am not sure of. This way if the spammers find that box it doesn’t affect the other sub boxes.

On both our computers we have downloaded Spybot, and AdAware programs, both free and also have Microsoft Defender and run these programs frequently to find and delete any spyware and Trojan horses. Anyone who has never used any of these programs will find out the first time they run them, their computers will be loaded with these programs. Almost all are just to track what web sites you log onto so they can direct specific ads to you, but some can be very sinister.

I also have a very strong firewall so when I leave my computer I turn it on and this blocks all incoming and outgoing transmissions.

I also have Norton Anti Spam with pop up and ad blockers and this blocks these popup ads or moving banner ads, but once in a while I have to turn it off to get certain web sites to work.

awww I like the spammers. It really makes me feel good to know some total stranger is so concerned about the size and hardness of my penis.

It also really touches me to know that some Nigerian prince wants my help in getting several million dollars out of the country.

Unfortunately, at that point the damage is already done. The fact that you receive the email (and you don't even click a link) already tells the spammer that your email address is active, because they didn't get a failure notice. Obviously they don't do this by hand, but with a software.

They don't! They just email to all possible combinations and look which are delivered and which come back. For example they take "@gmail.com" as a popular email provider and then start trying all combinations "aaaaaaaaaaaa@gmail.com" then "aaaaaaaaaaab@gmail.com" and so on. Looks like a lot of work, but

Chris Hansen should do that instead of that "To Catch an Identity Thief" thing where they caught thiefs, said "HEY we have you on camera!" and let them walk away since they had no legal power.

This is why you should NEVER publicly post your e-mail address on a website or in a forum - not even your personal website - as these programs scan the web for "@"s and automatically add them to their "address book". Nasty stuff...

The German magazine NEON did a funny experiment a couple issues ago: One of their editors went ahead and ordered every product from the spam mails he got.
The result:
- one company just took the money from his credit card and didn't ship anything
- the cheap Rolex watch of course fake but at least worked
- the penis pills that promised "at least four more inches" turned out to be colored dextrose pills after being handed to the laboratory (shipped out of the Pacific Northwest, all the way to Germany)
- the viagra shipment was a parcel from china (pills were the chinese pharma copy of the real viagra) and was filled into a little plastic sack which was hidden in a little box that was supposed to look like a mp3 player - so customs wouldn't find out it contained pharmaceuticals.

After receiving all this junk, the guy had to close down his e-mail account, cause after finding out that he actually ordered the stuff from the spam mails, his junk mail went up to several thousand e-mails a day.

One of the most entertaining articles I've ever read....

Cheers
Lukas
