Damn, You Canadians Make Good Beer

Thu Nov 08, 2007 11:23 pm

My roommates and myself have been trying different beer every weekend. I just had Labatt Blue, Molson Golden, and Moosehead for the first time. I love this stuff! They are all great but Moosehead is my favorite.

Any other Canadian beer I should try?

Try "Creemore". That used to be my favourite when I lived in Toronto.

Or try this site: www.thebeerstore.ca

Anything brewed by Unibroue.

I actually like Sleeman's Cream Ale 64. It's the only Sleeman's product I've been able to find around here.

I remember about 11 or so years back, one of my friends decided to take a road trip to Canada over Spring Break. Brought back a 12 pack of Upper Canada Pale Ale, now that was a good Canadian beer.

I visited them in 2000 and I told them about my love for cheap beer and they gave me a tour and a bunch of neat stuff, and a tin sign for my fence of outdoor beer signs. They were very nice. They normally don't give tours or at least back then they didn't.

I like all beers. I have had 597 commercial brands of beer (I keep track). 101 before I was 21. I only had three I didn't like. Michelob Spiced Ale (1997 only), Leinenkugel's Berry Wiess, and Mouthy Musky Ale.

Is it true that Molson is the beer of choice among Canadians?
Since I never been up there, all canadian beers I tried were "imports", but Molson left the best impression.

Now they are selling Labbat Blue here, but it´s made by AmBev so it tastes like any other (crap) beer they make.

Firstly, it's Labatt. Secondly, I'm not aware of Blue being brewed in Brasil, or exported there. Blue is exported to Paraguay from here.
BTW, if you can drink Molson's Canadian, you can drink Blue too. These mainstream beers are very similar to each other. If you wouldn't have a labelled bottle, you wouldn't know what you're drinking.

Labatt tastes exactly like what it is, a thin, corn-adjuncted North American mass-market lager. It's right on par with Coors and Miller, except there's even more corn flavor.

I'll never understand the myth of Canadian beer. Frankly, most of it sucks. Especially Keith's IPA, which isn't even an ale, much less a bitter pale one. The only Canadian beers I've found that truly excel are Steam Whistle Pilsner, the beers of the King Brewery, and the Unibroue ales.

Every time I go to Toronto, some smartass bartender makes smug remarks to the effect of "You're from the States? Bet you've never had good beer before." Uh, right, Gord. We don't get good beer in the USA. Sheesh.

A rep of Anheuser-Busch, Gaffel Koelsch Brewery and the Czech Budweiser Brewery are going to a bar after a business meeting.
The rep of Anheuser-Busch orders an American Budweiser. The rep from Cologne orders one of his products, while the Czech guy orders a mineral water.
The German and the American ask the Czech guy if he had a health problem. Anwers the Czech:"Since you guys are not drinking beer, I decided not to have a beer either."

No. North Americanized IPA goes the other way. North American brewers have taken the British IPA style and crushed it, using Chinook, Cascade, and Amarillo hops and sending its bitterness way off the charts. English folks who try American IPA won't even recognize the beer, it's so much more floral and bitter. And they certainly wouldn't recognize Keith's, because it's piss.

Gord - Nobody has ever accused LHMark of being the sharpest knife in the drawer, however when it comes to beer the dude knows his shit. And not just about American Beer, but Canadian, German/Bavarian, Belgian, Asian, beer from all over the world. You might not want to square off with him on this topic. Personal preferences aside, he knows what he speaks of.

Check out his beer blog. If you can get by his verbal copulation with Joe McBane, there is a lot of good stuff in it.

Keiron, did you even come here? Currently, the USA is the epicenter of craft beer. The craft beer segment is growing at 11% annually (or was, before the shitty hop harvest of 2007). Beer lists at bars and restaurants are featuring dozens of local choices from the hundreds of craft brewers across the country.

As well as getting adept at brewing difficult styles like Helles, HefeWeizen, and Belgian abbey ales, American craft brewers are inventing new ones all the time. Overall, the beer here is more varied, complex, and excellent than anywhere else in the world.

And I'm not just talking about the smallest microbreweries. Companies like Great Lakes Brewing in Cleveland, California's Sierra Nevada, and Brooklyn Brewing churn out thousands of barrels per year. Thanks to these and other craft brewers, the USA is finally recovering from the damage wrought by prohibition.

Just because visitors don't try the good beer doesn't mean it isn't here. And brother, it's here to stay.

Keiron, did you even come here?

Perhaps Mark, you didn't notice the  Wink at the end of my statement!?

And yes I have been to the US, 6 times.  Smile

Quoting LHMARK (Reply 40):

Sounds interesting!

I saw it. It's the same  Smile that usually appears after the words "American Football players are wimps. Rugby is a tougher sport"  Smile

Next time you come here, I'm taking you out for a beer.

Thanks! And next time you're in London, I know a nice few watering holes when you can get some decent beer/bitter/ale and the drinks are on me.

My roommates and myself have been trying different beer every weekend.

In Chicago you can get some great Wisconsin Beer. I would suggest Huber and Huber Bock. The brewery is over in Monroe Wisconsin. I would visit there if I were you. It would be a nice trip on a Saturday. Monroe is a great town and Huber is a great traditional brewer.

North American brewers have taken the British IPA style and crushed it, using Chinook, Cascade, and Amarillo hops and sending its bitterness way off the charts

OK, let's keep it in Canada and with the big breweries. Our mainstream ales are way too sweet. BU's around 16. English ales are going around 30.

Too bad it's hard to share beer over the Internet. Wildcat, if you're near YYZ, have you tried King Pilsner?

Didn't try it yet. BTW, you can see from my nick where I am. Too bad that I don't go to Toronto too much lately. Basically, I only see T1 at YYZ.

Anwers the Czech:"Since you guys are not drinking beer, I decided not to have a beer either."

 bigthumbsup

Czech beer is amazing (and cheap)!

Unfortunately it's difficult to get even mainstream Canadian beer here in the USA.

Yes I can get Unibroue's stuff, there's Blue, Molson Canadian, Ice, and Golden, even Moosehead. Sometimes I get lucky and find some microbrews.

Would it kill them to ship some Labatt 50, Molson Ex and Dry down here?
