Is this "official" or personal opinion? I find the Do-Wop era of Rock and the rock of the late 50's and early 60's to be the best. Can't include clips as work prevents me from getting such content.

Definitely the most interesting period of Rock music, my favorite bands are Led Zepplin, The Band, Grateful Dead late 60s/70s style music mainly Blues Rock. Sadly I am the only one in my group of friends who likes this kind of music.

I don't even know what emo is. I really don't care either. I do know that the people who listen to it like to show their non conformity by dressing like everyone else who listens to it. How nonconformist in a conformist kind of way.

Rap is just stupid these days. If you listen to the new stuff it is just repeat repeat repeat, spouting off out themselves, and made up words. In the 1980s you could understand everything the rapper said, today it is just mush. Rap warps your brain. The students who I have had that listen to mostly rap are dumber, meaner, and lazy. The students who I have who listened to rock did better on tests and were much friendlier. Even stoners who jam to Slayer and Metalica score way better on tests. Seven years of teaching in Detroit and metro Detroit has taught me that.

New Country sucks too. Give me the classics. I stopped buying new C&W in 1995. I like my country stars drunk and or stoned.

Quentin Tarantino tried to bring it back. This is one of the most classic scenes. Micheal Madsen's dance is priceless. I have been trying to learn it here at work during our slow season. Watch him from 3:12 to 3:33 the best part of the dance.

One classic tune and a classic movie making at it's greatest.

Not Interested...but some of the newer groups that do Alt Country or Americana type music are pretty good. Give me Willie, Waylon, and Johnny any day though for great country.

Some newer British stuff is good. I don't mean all these mundane bands such as The Enemy, Reverend & The Makers and The Twang sorts.

The explosion over the last few years of newer British talent has given us...

Fratellis- Flathead (Featured in an iPod ad here)

Bloc Party- So Here We Are (featured in a US car ad I believe and many other ads)

Bloc Party- Banquet (Everyone knows this song!!)

Kasabian- Empire (One of THE best music videos EVER, looks quite high budget)

Sadly grunge killed off glam/hair metal. Yes it was silly but the glam rockers knew how to party and always had hot chicks in their videos. Shredding was cool at it takes talent to do that. I was living in Los Angeles during the glam years of the late 1980s.
Grunge was just anger and no talent.

It was almost dead at the point but you are correct in that it sealed the deal. I love hair metal myself. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll!

And 70s rock had a lot of themes about rambling on, flying, sex with young women, evil women, and the like. Good stuff!

Quoting Superfly (Reply 21):

Some of them had talent. I'll give Pearl Jam credit for their later stuff but I just can't listen to the 10 album anymore. But at the end of the day you can only have so many songs about how much your life sucks, your parents didn't love you, etc. before you go the way of Cobain himself and eat the business end of a gun.

Zeppelin, The Clash, THe Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Chicago, Aerosmith, CSN(Y), Lynyrd Skynyrd, Talking Heads, hell, even the tail end of the 60s with Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane were great.

My favorite thing with the Doobie Brothers was when at the request of my then girlfriend's aunt we went to some non-denominational church in north Atlanta when they were visiting town. I'm not a huge fan of churches with full bands as I prefer organ music and old time hymns myself but I started laughing when they kicked into a Doobie Brothers song "Listen to the Music."

When asked what I was laughing at I asked if they knew the origination of the band name that was being covered. Of course they didn't until I told them and they were shocked. And then I asked if they might play "Jesus is Just Alright" next.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the amazing stuff being done in Germany in the late Sixties and Seventies.

Can, Neu!, Faust, Ash Ra Tempel... anybody? Personally, although I'm a massive fan of blues-rock, I find most of that stuff a bit too consciously macho for my taste. Although it's still extremely listenable...

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the amazing stuff being done in Germany in the late Sixties and Seventies.

Can, Neu!, Faust, Ash Ra Tempel... anybody?

Love all of that, but it's probably a bit too "out there" for this thread  Wink.
I like plenty of 70s music myself, and my taste is very diverse...X, Patti Smith, Blondie, Pink Floyd, to name but a few. I even like some disco, especially some of the more obscure instrumentals I've come across.
Even though we're talking about rock, you just can't beat that 70s soul, so here's one of my all-time faves:

I never liked Queen. Broadway-style show tunes just don't do it for me.

I agree. Probably the same for 2-pac too. The thug crowd in Detroit still loves that guy, but most of the thug kids would never listen to anything that old. Most of them consider last years bigs songs and artists to me old news. It is amazing how fast people fade in the hip hop world.

This thread just wouldn't be complete without some reel to reel videos playing some 70's music.

So here we go:

How about some live Chicago and "Feeling Stronger Every Day"

"Thunderstruck" by AC/DC

"Taking Care Of Business" by BTO

"Poor Poor Pitiful Me" by Linda Ronstadt (yes, she actually once was a rock singer)

"Don't Stop Believing" by Journey

"Time Passages" by Al Stewart

"Night Owl" by Gerry Rafferty

"Tuesdays Dead" by Cat Stevens

"Second Hand News" by Fleetwood Mac

"Rock-N-Me" By Steve Miller

"Ebony Eyes" by Bob Welch

And perhaps most fitting for the site:

"Jet Airliner" by Steve Miller

Hate to bust you out on that one. That was released in 1981.

AMEN!  praise
Kurt Cocaine and Nirvana would be on the Holiday Inn and County fair circuit playing with Faith No More, 38 Special and Little Feat.

Quoting Molykote (Reply 35):
Pete Townsend described rock in the 70's as "the fall of the Roman Empire".

...or perhaps the fall of his Empire.

Larry, your politics suck, your view of the economy sucks . . .

But you and your music and choice of auto are spot on . . .

I was going to say the same about you. Big grin

I agree and I don't see anything about 2-Pac and BiggySmall to revere. Many thugs and their apologist claim these thugs were 'assassinated'.
Chris Rock said it best; Marth Luther King and John F. Kennedy was 'assassinated', 2-Pac and BiggySmall 'got shot'.

Kurt Cocaine, 2-Pac and BiggySmall were from the same useless forgettable era. 1991 and onward was the real fall of the Western musical empire.

To those that think disco sucked and punk was so great, just tell me, which groups you think had more fun;

Disco

Disco

Punk

Punk rock is just 3 chords and a wad of spit.

At the disco, you were more likely to go home with a hot babe yet with punk you were likely to go home with a busted lip.

Let's not forget about the softer side of the 1970s.

Christopher Cross - Sailing

Ambrosia - Biggest Part Of Me

Bobby Caldwell - What you wont Do, You Do For Love

Samantha Sang - Emotion

Queen at their peak were simply amazing.

but it's probably considered by most to have occurred in the early 80s.

Couldn't disagree more.
Hot Space? Flash Gordon? That's not a peak.

Nah. Give me Night at the Opera, Day at the Races, and News of the World any day. They pretty much lost me after "The Game" aside from an occasional single that could be had on the Greatest Hits offerings. But their peak was clearly in the 70s.

Looks like The Bee Gees were too busy to show up for the video shoot.

I agree.
Perhaps it depends on where you were in the 1980s.
Queen remained very big in the U.K. but not here in the USA. Live at Wembley was recorded in 1986. Queen was no longer playing large arenas in the United States at that time.
I agree, 'Night at the Opera', 'Day at the Races', and 'News of the World' were musical masterpieces.  Cool

Innuendo (1991) was a great comeback album and one of my favorites. I was hoping that they would have toured but Freddy Mercury was sadly at the end of his life.

Late 70's early 80's...Zepplin (sp?) the Clash, Pink Floyd for sure!!

Just picked up "London Calling" not too long ago...one of the best albums ever.

My Pink Floyd favorites:
- Meddle (1971)
- Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
- Wish You Were Here (1975)
- The Wall (1979)

I have Animals and Obscured by Clouds, also from the '70s, though not my favorites. I bought a gold mastersound version of Wish last year on eBay for $100. I'm watching one auction now of a rare 2-track version, made in Japan for the Japan market, currently about GBP 300.

Quoting LHMARK (Reply 15):
Other great '70s bands:Talking Heads

Definitely!

Quoting 4holer (Reply 34):
Pink Floyd didn't suck either

Dark Side of the Moon (1973) and The Wall (1979) are considered two of the best albums of all time.

Other favorites:

- Fleetwood Mac (Rumours from '77)
- Eagles
- ABBA
- AC/DC
- Lynyrd Skynyrd (before the '77 crash) "Street Survivors" is great.
- ZZ Top....pick up "Tres Hombres" from 1973. Considered their best, much better than the '80s pop stuff.
- The Who
- Supertramp: Breakfast in America from '79 and Crime of the Century from 1974 are awesome.
