I Fixed My IPod... Sorta...

Wed Nov 14, 2007 4:29 pm

Some weeks ago, I started having trouble with my beloved iPod. The sound in the right earphone went away from time to time. Over time, things got worse. I changed earphones, but without any luck, so the problem obviously was inside the iPod. Eventually, around 3 weeks ago, the right earphone stayed mute.

First I went to the Apple store, who just told me to get a new one, cause repairing it would cost more than a new one... obviously not the answer I was looking for.

So I decided to have a look myself... (cue dramatic music)

I supposed maybe the little metal rounds in the jack were not connecting properly to the plug, so I tried to pull them a bit more out by using a tiny screwdriver...

And all of a sudden I heard a rather terrifying loud *crack*

Whoopsydaisy... the LCD screen...

Whatever was inside that LCD screen started to spread out over the entire screen, and a big black blob overtook the better part of the screen, while the rest was reduced to multi colored lines.

Needless to say I was a bit annoyed...

Now I didn't just have any sound from the right ear, I didn't have an iPod left...

Getting it fixed by apple was not an option, I might as well buy a new one, so I started looking on the net.

And Lo and Behold, for my attention was drawn to this site, who told me to just say no to crack

I ordered a new screen, for around $60 (hurray for a strong euro!)... ofcourse, the greedy bastards at customs charged me an extra €10, but at least I had my screen.

So a few days ago, I started "the operation".

You have to open up the iPod using some plastic tools. While doing this, the pod makes some horrible cracking sounds... which weren't exactly reassuring to my already nervous mind.

But, the whole operation was actually fairly simple. You just had to open up some tiny levers to get some cables out and pretty soon I was busy putting in the new screen.

The pod inside! The blue thing on the top is the hard disk, the new screen is on the right.

The cracked screen!

In around half an hour, I had put in the new screen, reconnected all the wires and closed up the pod again... Now for le moment suprême, would I be able to see anything.... I pushed the center button. Nothing at first. Then... the empty battery sign came on. Hurrah!

Being an expert iPod opener by now, I decided to open it up again and see if I could do something about the sound. And, success again. The trouble with the sound apparently lies in the connection of the earphonejack to the device itself... a highly technologically advanced solution had to be thought up to solve this, consisting mainly of three small pieces of cardboard inserted around the connection

Quite happy everything turned out fine

I had the same problem with the earphone jack. There is a store in Toronto called iRepair which just opened the iPod, and put in a new jack for $50. I don't have anywhere near the knowhow to open it up like you. Congrats on getting it working.

Someone's going to get mad at me for saying this, but when my old iPod died and Apple was being arrogant about it, I went to Wal-Mart and got an identical one, pried the backs off of mine and the Wal-Mart ones, swapped them (since the serial # is engraved on the back) and just took it to Wal-Mart saying it wouldn't hold a charge (so that no one else gets stuck with the same unit...and Apple ends up eating the cost of repair. Not to plug another product, but I bought the iVue for mine (it's a clear housing, Google it!) and painted the inside...you'll be amazed what a metallic blue iPod goes for on eBay!

Next time, spend the $30.00 for an extended warranty...I did for my 2 kids' iPOD's and have had both replaced for sound and display issues, one cracked, and numerous sets of earbuds...

I would've, if I had the chance, but alas, no such thing was available to me. And exactly how long is that extended warranty lasting?

Great solution... I guess that's what companies deserve for giving you bad support  Smile

Same here! But now you're limited to 3 per year without a reciept... plus they don't take back iPods since they can run the serial number to see if it was sold at Wal-Mart. I'm really contemplating upgrading my Zune to a 160gb device, even if it means an iPod gets downgraded to a 30gb one. I'm going to go now before JAGflyer starts crying.

Yep, that's the same thing I have, looks like maybe it's a common thing to happen to iPods.

It's on the inside that the problem lies. My "cardboard wrapping" solution is only partly effective. I do have sound again, but if I put my iPod in my pocket and run around, the pressure on the iPod causes it to deform a bit, and I loose the sound every time my leg goes up Big grin

I should start looking for a new pouch that I can hang around my neck...  Smile

little update: I managed to completely screw up the sound  banghead  The cardboard solution did not exactly work out as planned, and my constant fiddling with it, caused the earphone jack to break...  faint

I just ordered a replacement, more repair work coming up!

Still, all these new parts will still cost me much less then buying a new one  Smile And I was able to buy it in Singapore for around 200 euro's, while at the time it was still at 330 euro's in Belgium, so I'm still good  spin

I'm getting myself a new iPod classic this Christmas to replace the iPod mini I got almost 3 years ago. It still works alright, but if I don't use it for a couple of days, the battery gives up on me.

I may have a fiddle around with my mini once I get my replacement!
