New Orleans Most Dangerous.....Nope, Try Detroit

Mon Nov 19, 2007 4:14 pm

According to a study noted in the linked article, Detroit is the US most dangerous city:
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...WLAM&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

The article doesn't list beyond the top ten, which are Detroit, St Louis, Flint MI, Oakland, Camden NJ, Birmingham, North Charleston SC, Memphis, Richmond CA, and Cleveland.

The local news, citing the study, said New Orleans doesn't even fall within the top 25, slotting in at #26, just behind Orlando.

Of course, studies can be manipulated to suit one's individual perceptions, and New Orleans has more than its share of crime, but in light of last week's anti-Louisiana thread, I'm glad to see that there's at least one negative stat/list/study that LA/NOLA doesn't lead.

But also note that cities like Chicago and Minneapolis weren't included due to "insufficient data". I was kind of shocked to see St. Louis listed way up there in the top.
But I can see how Detroit go to where it is, drying up of thousands of jobs, virtually no expansion of their economy.
Have you seen housing prices in Detroit? You can get a mini mansion in a very nice neighborhood for just a few $100K.

Isn't that a bit like saying that Afghanistan is more dangerous than the Sudan but less so than Iraq?

Minneapolis

Do you mean Murderapolis? Man, the way the North Minneapolis is going this year, there shouldn't be any more gang-bangers to shoot each other. Unfortunately, half the people who get killed are innocent. Minneapolis really needs to do something to clean up the filth that has infiltrated it's city limits.

well a lot of the shithole cities in terms of crime are in the East, particularly Baltimore, Philly and DC. I wouldnt be that afriad to go to Motown, just particular places at a certain time of the day.

"The study ranked Mission Viejo, Calif., as the safest U.S. city, followed by Clarkstown, N.Y.; Brick Township, N.J.; Amherst, N.Y.; and Sugar Land, Texas."

Of course these are safe... nobody knows where they are!!! Seriously, Brick Township is about 45 minutes from here and take it from me... it is NOT a city!!

well, only if you live in the area, but youre right. Most of the Suburban areas are going to be safer, lack of cheap renting space, less concentration of gang and drug activity. BTW, I think they used a measure of 75,000 residents.

Thats kind of mis-leading (not your statement, I mean the survey)... because a township is not a city, but many towns under one government... I think they could have came up with a better method.

sort of like how Pittsburgh is really supposed to be pronounced? BTW, its basically De-troi, in a french accent, that would probably throw off a lot of people.

Not to stray too far off topic, but it's from the British identification of the region as "The Sudan".....I used it there simply for effect and because I recently read up on Churchills early years.

The city name comes from the Detroit River (in French le détroit du Lac Erie), meaning "the strait of Lake Erie," linking Lake Huron and Lake Erie, in the historical context the strait included Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River.

Detroit means "strait" in French. Frogs pronounce it [det'Rwa].  Smile

There are lots of originally French toponyms in the US - Vermont, Concord, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Illinois (from an Indian word via its French deformation), Maine... which the French always pronounce according to French rules...

Most of the cities population is uneducated, most of the city is falling apart at the seams, drugs and gangs are prevalant, the police are mostly corrupt, the mayor is an idiot, people are having kids and not being parents, etc etc.. Let's not forget all the lasyass bums who would rather sit on their asses and collect off the state then actually do some work..

The biggest issues are lack of education and lack of proper parenting.

To quote some people from Detroit: "There aint nothin gone wrong wit detroit. We's fine jes how we is."

Detroit is one of those cities that needs to be completely leveled and started over..new population, new buildings, new EVERYTHING.

It may be called Detroit Metro Airport, but it is actually a few cities WEST of the city of Detroit. DTW is in Romulus.

Nah, not so much at all really. The NOPD is actually making strides to curb the problems. They just moved out of FEMA trailiers for the first time since Katrina and back into real offices, the city now has a crime lab again, all the cop cars now have cameras in them, and more officers are patrolling the troubled neighborhoods. Small but positive steps.

NOLA is a completely different story. Different type of wipeout.. And a lot of the original residents are still there.
