Remote Shut Down

Tue Nov 27, 2007 8:07 am

I need to get remote shutdown to work on our network. However, I get the message access denied, how do I allow access on my computers? - This is with Windows XP Home Service Pack 2.

Go to :

My Computer Properties (Remote tab)
and check the "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer".

Usually this does the trick.

I completely worded my question wrong (practically asked the complete wrong thing).

I am having problems connecting to the other computers in my house wirelessly (need it so I can use remote shutdown). My computers are not allowing me to start a working home network (can't share files, etc.) I've tried going through the firewall, and other security features on both computers. I've gone through the net to find what my problem is, and when I think I find it, it doesn't work either.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Things that come to my mind :

- Check that both your computers are in the same workgroup
- If your computers are joined with a RJ45 cable, is it correctly cross-pinned ?

Do you want to shut down computers remotely over the network?

Try:

Microsoft Windows Resource Kit is a separate CD.

This is a link that describes shutdown.exe:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;317371

More information and a list with free downloadable tools from the Resource Kit you can find here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...chinfo/reskit/default.asp#section1

Unfortunately shutdown.exe is not one of the free available tools. But there are some free third party tools that do the same job (for example PsShutdown on http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pstools.shtml).

At the moment I found another small free utility that also seems to work with Win9x. But you have to install it on all of your computers and it uses IP addresses and computer names for remote actions: PowerOff 3.0.0.15
