7.4 Earthquake Off Martinique

Thu Nov 29, 2007 8:41 pm

I am currently in San Juan on a layover and felt what clearly was an earthquake. I started feeling this rolling motion, not shaking, and I instantly thought it was an earthquake. Low and behold, about 20 minutes later on CNN they were reporting an earthquake epicentered off the northwest coast of Martinique. Martinique is about 400 miles southeast of San Juan.

It appears there is no damage at Lamentin International Airport since Eagle had an ATR enroute to FDF at the time and it has since landed at FDF, deplaned, loaded up more pax and is now enroute back to SJU. I've been trying to access Martinique's website, in particular the airport's page, but the server is not available. Perhaps this has something to do with the earthquake.

Here's more info from BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7120018.stm
This is FDF's website, but it hasn't been working: http://www.martinique.cci.fr/

We didn't feel anything here on Margarita Island. There was the rumour of a possible Tsunami - but this was just a rumour. Accoring to the media the earthquake was felt in CCS, but without any damages.

I am on the 15th floor of the hotel so no doubt that compounded the sensation. I thought I was losing it at first, but then noticed the curtain rod and chain on the ceiling fan (which was turned off) swaying. I then knew the whole room was swaying, not just me  drunk .

We felt it here in St. Kitts. Actually shook for quite sometime, at least 2-3 minutes(felt like forever) but thankfully no damage here.

The Northern part of the Island was most affected. Power out and villages cut off etc..... the Earthquake was also felt as far away as French Guyana.

The USGS said the depth of the quake, 90 miles, made it unlikely to generate a tsunami. At least that is some good news out of such a powerful quake. Had it been closer to the surface much, much more damage could have been done.

Compare that massive quake to the one that hit off the coast of Sumatra some 3 years ago. That was right at the ocean floor, as there was ocean floor lift of about 45 to 50 vertical feet. We all know what that did, right?!!

I think a lot of people overlook the vertical location of the Earthquake and instead focus on the magnitude of the earthquake.
