How Fast Can You Pitch?

Fri Nov 30, 2007 7:10 am

Personally I find baseball to be a fairly uninteresting sport, but one aspect of the game that I have Plenty of respect for is the pitchers. Being able to put out a 150/160kph fastball is really awesome.

So, I was very happy to finally find a place in west Kobe where you can measure your own pitching speed.
I went along recently to test myself out,...but I was slightly disappointed with my result!!

The highest I managed was 123kph. I have never done any form of actual training so I think it is not bad, but I was really hoping to get 130 on the day.
So I have set myself a target of 130kph by the end of the year. (Though I am not really sure how one is supposed to go about getting better at such things).

So how about you guys?! Do we have any 140+ pitchers in our ranks?

And are there any training tips/techniques for pitching??  weightlifter

I second that, I prefer cricket.

I dont think I can pitch more than 65MPH, and I dont play baseball whatsoever.

I've been clocked at 82 mph, several years ago. I was just throwing for speed though, I know I couldn't throw an actual strike that hard.

AAahhh you bugger... No fair no fair. Thats a shade above my 130 target.  hissyfit   Smile

Ah well, If things go well (which is improbable) perhaps I will try to get 140kph by the end of 2008.

I guess that's the real key, control it at 82mph. I can't even throw close to 82mph personally, but softball in the summer doesn't require that thankfully!

I pitched throughout high school. I'm more of a control pitcher then speed, but I could average around 70-75 mph and still pitch on the corners, that's the 4 and 2 seam fastball, but my offspeed pitches can tend to be wild at times.

Could I pitch that fast now? Probably not, It's been 5 years since I last pitched, but once in awhile, I'll try those guess your speed pitching.

I don't play baseball but I find it interesting that this speed is almost exactly the same as the fast bowlers in cricket even thought the styles of getting a ball there is very different, do you think that this is some sort of human limitation of being able to transfer energy to a ball? I cant bowl fast at all, maybe 60mph, but i have fired balls at people in the nets with the machine at 99mph, its fast!

I can pitch from vertical to horizontal in under 5 seconds - depends on how many caipirinhas I've had.

The fastest I've ever pitched is only 55MPH. I'd like to get up to 65MPH. What kind of training or stretching would I have to do?

Well from baseball I have seen on the telly the key is to grow an unbelievably enormous arse.

I suppose I'm blessed with a rubber arm/shoulder. Played baseball and tennis competetively throughout high school and college, been a few years now what with family and career but as of 2001, I was clocked at 91mph fastball and 128mph serve. Not bad for a beaten down body now. Haha!

I never knew how fast I could pitch a baseball but when I played in high school I used to pitch batting practice, so I must of had some speed on the ball back then. (I was a outfielder)

I'm not sure one can increase speed with stretching. Pretty much a gift you're born with. A few mph can be added by tinkering with mechanics, but that's about it.

If you want to read a fascinating story, do research on a fellow named Steve Dalkowski, a guy who probably had the greatest arm ever...but no control. Supposedly, he was up in the 104-110 mph territory.
