My Two Beautiful Sons

Fri Dec 07, 2007 9:41 pm

Hey Everyone,

Like I said in the other thread, thank you all so much for the kind words, prayers, pieces of advice and overall kind heartedness. It was very much appreciated.

Ok, so since I had a couple dozen PMs asking me more details of the events, I'll just streamline it into a single post for all to read.

So... we all know my wife and I were expecting, well my wife is skinny and has a small frame so we were told early on, to expect a tougher than normal pregnancy, and that the babies would probably come a little early.

The pregnancy was typical with no major issues. At one point my wife started to LOSE weight, which is rare but I guess happens sometimes. So they gave her a new diet and some meds. Things were back on track. She actually didn't start to show for quite sometime, and never really got big, even with twins.

So, on this past Tuesday morning while I was at work, I got a call from my wife saying she was having sharp labor pains and that her friend was already getting her to the hospital. I met her at the hospital about 30minutes later, expecting a false alarm. When I got there, I found that, she was definitely having legitimate labor pains! The doctors were not keen on bringing the babies into the world, since they were only 30.5wks old, so they gave my wife drugs to stop the pregnancy. But they were honest: there was a good chance these babies would be born in the near future. In preparation for this, they gave the babies a shot to help rapidly develop their lung surfacant. (Which apparently helps them breathe without damaging their lungs). The steroid induces production of this stuff, I guess. They were also worried about Baby B, who was smaller than Baby A.

So my job was to keep my wife calm, because if she was stressed, the babies would be stressed. But it certainly wasn't easy. Needless to say, this was all coming rather quickly.

-We hadn't even taken those lamaze classes.

-We hadn't even picked out names! We had a list, but no definite decisions, so we had to make the decision right there in the hospital.

-We hadn't finished the baby room, nor finished baby shopping.

-My wife's baby shower wasn't suppose to be until Dec 15!

-And her parents, and my parents, were planning on flying down here in Feb to see the newborns.

So all of this was weighing on me. And about 36hrs after we went to the hospital, the labor pains/signs returned, and this time there was no stopping it. Her water broke and we were told the babies would be born that night. So of course I was freaked out.

Labor was actually smoother than I expected. The nurses were great and gave us a crash course on lamaze (proper spelling??) and helped break the tension. I was in the room the entire time holding my wife's hand and giving her support. Baby A was born first at 0515, it was a boy! They briefly held him up and showed him to us, and he was so red/purplish and wrinkly. My wife started yelling and asking why he wasn't crying, at which time i realize she is right - he wasn't! But they assured us he was ok, with under-developed lungs this happens. They had me come around and cut his cord. But there was little time for introductions because Baby B - the smaller one - was already coming out. He was born at 0523. The doctors were more urgent and focused with him. We barely saw him before they took him away to the NICU with his brother.

We named Baby A, Nathaniel Chase, and Baby B, Hayden Elijah. For such a climatic event, they were taken away so quickly there was no proper cool down period. One moment there was a flurry of activity and excitement, and then they were gone. My wife is pretty upset and worried about their health.

They are currently in incubation. They have tubes going in their mouths, patches all over them, wire and machines hooked up to them. And you cannot even hold them because they are separated from you by a plastic box. I'm a tough guy... but seeing that gets me choked up. My wife is being released tomorrow, but they will be in here for about 5wks. All of our friends have been great, they've taken care of us, made sure we ate, slept, etc...

All my sons (wow that is so strange to say!) do is sleep. They're fed via tubes. I really didn't know how I would feel when I first saw them... hell, I thought I had two more months to prepare. Everyone kept telling me the same thing, "When you see them, you will never love someone more than at that moment." And honestly, I never really believed that. But seeing them lay there sleeping -- it was unbelievably emotional. I don't ever want to forget that feeling. Amazing.

ANYWAY, I am going to get some rest, I want to go back again tonight. Again, thanks for all of your support and kind words. I'm sorry this was so long winded. I'll get some pictures up in this thread sometime this weekend. They won't be your usual baby pictures... the boys are frighteningly small, with wires and tubes everywhere. Thanks all!

-Aharon, Kristen, Nathaniel, Hayden

Wow, must be difficult. My brother's twins were in incubators for about 3 weeks as well, and he said at first it freaked him out, seeing them so tiny and connected to the monitors and everything, but they were absolutely fine - it's just to help them adjust to being outside. Here's to a speedy reunion and homecoming. And congratulations to you and your wife.

I really like the names you've chosen, btw.

Aharon--

Thanks for the update.

It is indeed hard to see your children helpless and sitting in the incubator like that.

I am sure they will fight through and win the battle the same way I did!

You did a fine job of getting them in, calming your wife and all.

Good luck, god speed and wishing for the best!

Reading your story, I'm left pretty much speechless. However, if they're as tough as you are, I'm sure they'll pull through the time in the incubator and you'll both have your kids home in no time!

Aharon-

I think the 100+ replies in the last thread show how much we all know what a good guy you are, so I know Nathaniel and Hayden will have a great father, and mother to look after them. You are all in my prayers sir, and my deepest congratulations to you, Kristen, and your families. Thanks so much for letting us be a part of your blessings.

All the best, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Congratulations to you guys.

Congratulations! I'm glad to read that, considering the circumstances, everything went well.

Now, from what I remember well enough from my lectures etc. to tell a brand-new dad, the doctors provided very important therapy by (indirectly) providing your children with more lung surfactant. As for the development of your children, chances are their premature birth will not at all hinder them becoming perfectly healthy kids. The NICU I visited for one course had a wall literally plastered in thank-you notes from preemies who'd all grown up to be "normal" teenagers. I'm sure that having inherited your fighter genes, yours will in a few years time add two more handsome photos to that sort of wall.  Wink

I hope you're able to caress your sons, even while they're in incubators.

All the best of my wishes to you!

Congratulations, mate, to both you and your good lady.  champagne

Don't worry about the incubator thingy and being separated from them, they'll be fine. My Granddaughter was a premature baby and in an incubator for weeks. At a little over 1lb at birth and the size of my palm, she has grown into a beautiful 11yr old who is intelligent and kind. I am sure your two boys will grow to be fine examples of the breed, and follow in dads footsteps!

All the very best to you all
