2008 A.net LAS Meet PT 3: Trips On The Flop.....

Sun Dec 09, 2007 8:33 pm

Seeing as the previous thread 2008 A.net LAS Meet PT 2: Pair Of Deuces.... (by Srbmod Oct 12 2007 in Non Aviation) got archived a few weeks ago, time to start a new thread. I had been debating whether to wait until the after the first of the year, but decided to go ahead and do a new thread.

For those of you just turning in, here's the rundown:

Dates: April 4-6, 2008

The heart of the Meet is April 4th and 5th, but some folks will be getting there on the 3rd, and some folks will be staying until the 7th (or later). There will probably be some stuff thrown together for the evening of the 3rd and for the 6th, but most of that won't get started until we have an idea of what dates the attendees will be there for.

The List (as of 11/08/07, the last update to The List.)

Quite a bit of info is posted in the Part 2 thread linked earlier in this post.

The Return Of The Room Rates:
All rooms "deluxe" unless otherwise indicated

Classic:
4/03: $ 99.00
4/04: $169.00
4/05: $169.00
4/06: $ 89.00

Capri (3 Story Motel Block 100yds from Main Tower.):
4/03: $ 89.00
4/04: $159.00
4/05: $159.00
4/06: $ 79.00

Harrah's
4/03: $120.00
4/04: $225.00
4/05: $250.00
4/06: $130.00

At some of these properties, there are other rooms besides the ones listed, but are more expensive then the ones listed.

For those of you just tuning in, the reason why these hotels are the ones I've listed, these are where for the most part, the majority of the folks stay at. You're not committed to stay at those properties, these just are the most convenient to where the group meets up and hangs out at (O'Sheas).

Here's a brief field report from my recent trip out there. There were some things I didn't get a chance to check out, like Hofbrauhaus, mainly because I ended up having to tighten my budget after getting hit in the casinos pretty hard early on.

O'Sheas is still there. They've moved some of the blackjack tables from up front and put them in the back of the casino by the poker room. They replaced them with other table games. They've also got beer pong at the back bar by the food court. You buy the pitcher(s), they provide the cups and ping pong balls.

View from my room @ Harrah's (8th Floor Marti Gras Tower):

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b358/srbmod/1107LASTRIP002.jpg

I spent part of Saturday just walking around and exploring. The Wildlife Habitat at The Flamingo is pretty cool. I ended up going over there several times as it's a good place to decompress after gambling.

That night, I went to see Penn & Teller @ Rio. If you've never seen them, I highly recommend it. It's quite entertaining and interesting. They even go out into the lobby after the show for autographs and photos.

And just for you Superfly, I saw this on the Flamingo website.
Gino Vannelli 2/22-2/23/2008

I guess you may have to take an early trip to Vegas. He's moving up the ladder and is playing The Strip.....

LogansGirl's contract ends on April 5th, but we're trying to ensure that she ends work on Thursday, so we're hoping to be there by Friday evening and will probably stay three nights at Flamingo. Good to hear O'Shea's is still going, but I liked the blackjack tables out by the street with the doors open...one of the few casinos where you can tell what time of day it is.

Excellent, hopefully things will work out and we won't have to start a thread in your honor this time around......  duck

I meant to add in the thread starter that I was planning on going ahead in the next few weeks and reserving a rental vehicle just in case. If it's not needed, I can just cancel it before the trip.

Hey, Srbmod, have you checked the rates at all the other hotels in the valley i.e. Green Valley Ranch Station, Red Rock H&C? Or are you just focusing on the famous 9 mile piece of road?

Just along the Strip, mainly because of access to the Deuce and the Monorail. Some of the prices off-Strip are as expensive as some of the higher end properties on the Strip. If I was going to be paying $1000 for four nights, I'd probably chose the Bellagio over GVR.

Actually it's not. The cheap rates in general are Sunday-Thursday (with some exceptions, like during major conventions) and the rates for Friday and Saturday being the highest. Sunday-Thursday tends to be the slowest days for many casinos, with Thursday being the busiest of the weekdays, as many folks that are coming out for the weekend get there on Thursdays. My first trip to Vegas back in 2004, the room rate for Thursday night was double what I had paid per night Sunday-Wednesday (Check out Thursday). Heck, what I paid back then for four nights @ The Riviera (including the $75 booking fee from the site I booked it through) was less than what many places charge per night these days even during the "slow" times.

From what I can find, the school districts in the Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas areas look like they will be doing Spring Break in March, most of them around Easter, some earlier in the month. Same goes with UNLV, UCLA, USC, University of Arizona, and Arizona State.

I dropped between $600-700 myself last month out there. I should have remembered why slot machines are called one-armed bandits, as I ended up playing the slots a lot more than usual as I couldn't always get a seat at a $10 blackjack or if there was a $10 table, it was a multi-shoe deck (While I used to be decent at a multi-deck shoe, I prefer a single deck game despite the crummy payout for blackjack.).. Come April, I'm going to stick with playing blackjack, with maybe a session or two at the craps table, a little bit of sports betting and at least one go at a poker tournament over @ O'Sheas. I played in one there this last trip and finished 9th out of 26 players. I had one hand that started out being dealt pocket Kings. Then comes the flop, trip 10s (The inspiration for the title of this thread BTW). I go all-in because there was only a handful of ways I could lose. I get one player to call (they ended up going all-in as a result) with Jack nine suited. Then the turn, ANOTHER 10. Essentially the best my opponent could do would be a split pot if an Ace showed up on the river, which didn't happen (I can't even remember what the river card was). I was doing fine in the tournament until they balanced out the tables and was moved to another table. I missed a few chances to increase my chip count but managed to be among the chip leaders when they merged the two tables. I lasted about 100 minutes, which is better than the 15 I lasted back in March.

I wouldn't wait too long in regards to Casino Royale, as it's a very small property, with 152 rooms. Anyway, most hotels only require the first night's rate (+ taxes) as a deposit in order to reserve a room (which is why it's better to book directly through a hotel as opposed to a travel site). If your  dollarsign  situation doesn't look so good, you can cancel and get your money back.

I got an internet special room rate that's even better than you posted, SRB. So, might as well change the stats.

Here's a humorous review of the Casino Royale:

I've gone in their casino a few times to gamble. Lost $100 there this last trip at the blackjack table.

Trust me, I'm not cheap (although the CV pages amuse me as well.). I'm just tight on my budget until I get my place paid off.  Wink (which is sooner than you would think with someone my age.)

I just have 4 requirements of a Vegas hotel:

1: a secure door.
2: a clean bed.
3: a clean bathroom.
4: no bugs.

The other things I can pick up as I go.

Plus, the Casino Royale is as close to the meeting point as I'm going to get with those rates. I lucked out last year with IP.

Megadog.....  ill  I managed to eat about half of one before throwing it in the trash. Worst than high school cafeteria hot dogs.

The cheap margaritas weren't bad, but the $1.99 imports and microbrews (Newcastle & Fat Tire especially) made that place great.

You'll have fun navigating through Harrah's Carnaval Court at night.

When I was out there last month I saw a few sites that were definitely "Only In Las Vegas". There was a priest (he was wearing the collar) outside of the Casino Royale collecting for some charity. But the kicker was outside of the IP next to O'Sheas. There was a Salvation Army bell ringer right next to one of the porn slappers.

Looks like I'm going to make this trip solo, so we can scratch the missus off the list.

I'm interested in splitting a room to save a little  twocents  . Anyone interested?

For all those on the fence... WN has a great fare sale going right now. I'll be booking my ABQ-LAS in the next week or two; flights are currently $215; compared to $260 or $270 for US or $240 for F9. (I would take F9, but a 1.5 hour non-stop compared to almost 6 hours with a stop in DEN makes no sense at all.)

So anyone interested in splitting the cost of a room? (I do have a wedding to pay for ya know...)  Smile

Flight is squared away now as well. Flying on Delta (Don't even say it Pep!), as I got a pretty decent fare ($277 before taxes, $318 after taxes), and am glad I waited a few weeks to book as I saved about $70. Currently scheduled 767 both ways (hope it stays that way). I'm getting in around 11:15 on the 3rd.

Go ahead and add me to the list, I'll be staying at either Mandalay Bay or the Luxor. I'll let you know closer to the date if I'm bringing anyone along with me. I'll be flying in on CO from IAH.

BCA....if you want, you can bunk with me, since I'm probably getting a double bedded room, or a suite. Not sure yet, we'll see how it pans out.

Those hotel rates need to be updated. My wife was checking tonite and I think most have gone up. I'm not cheap but paying over 100 bucks a night just to sleep rubs me the wrong way. We may end up downtown. What is going on that weekend that is driving up the prices? Wynn is at a 1000 dollars a night.

Ask and ye shall receive. Being a slight bit lazy now that I found this nifty search tool on the Harrah's website. I'm using a room rate offer Harrah's Entertainment sends their Total Rewards members on a quarterly basis. If it wasn't for that offer, I'd be looking Downtown myself. Looking at the room rates, next year may definitely be a Downtown Vegas one if the rates stay this way.

I'll throw in some other hotel options (Assuming folks have transportation):

Gold Coast, which is over near The Rio and The Palms

(Rates are for Deluxe King or Double Two Doubles)

4/3: $ 61
4/4: $118
4/5: $118
4/6: $ 66

Hooters Casino Hotel

Bungalow Room:

4/3: $ 59
4/4: $119
4/5: $119
4/6: $ 59

Palace Station

Courtyard Room:
4/3: $39.99
4/4: $99.99
4/5: $99.99
4/6: $34.99

Well gents.. I'm not going to officially bail; but I'm putting my attendance on life support. We're trying to put every cent towards the wedding and the missus is giving me a bad time about "wasting" money on Vegas while we're trying to accomplish said-goal.

We'll see how the tax refunds pan out...

Yeah I heard they finally got rid of the "Plaza Stench" and it's now in residence at the Planet Hollywood.  duck

You know what, the Plaza has a pretty tempting rate for the mini suites ($303.96; the standard room is the $175 room, at least that's what I'm getting off of the Plaza's website). Beats what I'm paying for the Flamingo by about $100 and some change. The reviews I've read about the place are a mixed bag, but it seems as though "worn around the edges" and "dirty" seem to be in most of the reviews. We'll let you be our guinea pig.......

Or they could just elope to Vegas, use some of that money to get a really nice room at say the Wynn, Bellagio, or Caesars (Which would be my plan of attack if and when I do get married [Not in any hurry to get hitched, so if it happens,it happens]).

Unfortunately, LogansGirl and I are gonna have to bag this, as we've already booked flights to BHM for that part of April. Hopefully I can score an interview down there so we can relocate later in 2008.
