College Hockey: Christmas Break Is Upon Us

Tue Dec 11, 2007 4:09 am

The NCAA Hockey season is just about halfway over as it moves into christmas break, giving schools a chance to rest and recoup for the intense second half. This is the thread to discuss how your team is doing. Better than expected? Worse than Expected? Same old same old? Here's the USCHO poll:

USCHO.com/CSTV Division I Men's Poll

December 10, 2007
Team (First Place Votes) Record Points Last Poll
1 Michigan (27) 16-2-0 953 3
2 Miami (15) 14-2-0 933 1
3 Colorado College ( 6) 10-4-0 905 2
4 Denver ( 2) 12-4-0 862 4
5 Michigan State 12-3-2 803 5
6 Notre Dame 16-4-0 770 6
7 North Dakota 8-6-1 658 7
8 Clarkson 10-5-0 614 9
9 Massachusetts 7-3-5 599 11
10 New Hampshire 8-4-1 590 8
11 Northeastern 7-4-2 483 12
12 Minnesota 9-8-1 366 15
13 Wisconsin 7-7-2 358 10
14 Harvard 6-3-2 330 13
15 Boston College 5-4-5 278 17
16 Rensselaer 8-5-3 243 19
17 St. Cloud State 7-7-2 175 14
18 Minnesota-Duluth 6-6-4 133 16
19 Bowling Green 8-6-0 99 18
20 Mass.-Lowell 7-4-4 96 NR

Personally I'm disappointed in the way North Dakota has come out the first half of the season. We kept all our star players except Jonathan Toews, who went to the NHL to play for Chicago. With 2 arguable Hobey Baker candidates on the squad (one of which, Ryan Duncan, was last years recipient), one would think they'd do better than 6-6-0 in conference play.

Another surpise it seems is Miami-Ohio. Who are they and where did they come from?

Don't follow the sport like I did when I attended college, but it's nice to see Bowling Green listed again in the Top 20. They lost 2 very close games this weekend to #1 Michigan, and it seems they might be getting their old mojo back, when they were perennially ranked (usually in the Top 10). BG is going to be redoing the Ice Arena in the next few years, and, hopefully, that will attract some more top talent.

As for Miami, they've been a program on the rise for a good decade now. They used to be a doormat of the CCHA, and we always made fun of their "pajama" bottoms, but with BG's fall, Miami has been a solid program for a good while now.

DU has been quite surprising this year because we are such a young team, and even more incredibly, the youngsters have been stepping up...the overwhelming majority of our goals have come from our freshman and sophs...hopefully we can keep it up throughout the heart of our WCHA schedule...I know of 2 upcoming guaranteed DU wins already... February 15 and 16 in Grand Forks, North Dakota  Wink

I love college hockey. I usually do the Pick Em at www.insidecollegehockey.com but did not for some reason this year.

Go Wildcats (New Hampshire)!

Gophers almost blew it on Saturday against UND. Kangas held up OK late, but I almost thought he was going to pull a Frazee and choke the game away for a bit. Personally, I'd like to see Kanga gett a little more ice time, as I have very little faith in Jeff Frazee's ability to stop a beach ball, much less a hockey puck. The Gophers' play this season has been very poor...they've pretty much stunk up the ice since beating Michigan in the Icebreaker at the X (and they were lucky to get to that game, as RPI almost knocked them out). They went to Michigan later and got their collective asses handed to them.

I would say that UND has been subpar this season as well, although UMD (Duluth) has been playing pretty well, considering how crappy they were last year.

During that late rally it was UND's game to win, but they went gomer and during the last minute they had the puck in the gopher zone, not a single shot was taken.

Reminds me of the Wild game against the Flyers last week, during the second 5-on-3, where the Wild kept passing the puck, looking for the perfect shot, instead of peppering the net.

Pretty much what happened. I also have to say that Shepherd was enjoying being the eleventh skater on the ice, just wish he could learn how to properly call a game.

And when was the last time you swept a series? DU's got some series offense, and why isn't Mannino in the pros yet?

Ok Why is St Cloud State sucking? They've got a good offense, best in the WCHA in terms of Goals per game, most goals scored, best power play, moderate GAA, decent penalty kill... and they're 3-6 in Conf play.

In related news, the guy who started that site died suddenly last week of a heart attack at age 39.

Add the two games from their holiday tournament; some pretty weak teams this year, Northern Michigan, Dartmouth and Sacred Heart, which I would ask who?

I don't either... but I'm still a proud Northeastern Husky Big grin

I was pretty demoralized after they started 1-4-0, but they're 6-0-2 since with a pair of wins over #10 UNH and one against #20 UMass-Lowell... and they're leading Hockey East!

Huskies play them Dec 28 in the 1st round of the Badger showdown in Madison, WI (winner gets the Colgate/Wisconsin winner)

I will admit, very surprised they are doing this well. Howver it will realllllyyy depend on how they do in the ECAC to see how they end up....

and BTW...I'll be attending the Big Red Freakout for RPI in February as well.
