Need Help - Songs About Places

Sun Dec 16, 2007 6:59 am

Hey all,

For one of my classes at school I'm trying to throw together a video/picture/music montage for a class of mine, showing different destinations around the world and such. I need help with a lot of the songs though. I'm looking for music that has a bit of a connection to a certain place or destination, and so far I haven't been able to find too many songs....so, I'm turning to all of you!!! Really all I have so far is:

BKK- "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head
SFO- "San Francisco" by Scott McKenzie
(California)- "Californication" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers

So, any/all suggestions are appreciated!!!

I love Paris (Nat KIng Cole)

Every time I look down on this timeless town
whether blue or gray be her skies.
Whether loud be her cheers or soft be her tears,
more and more do I realize:

I love Paris in the springtime.
I love Paris in the fall.
I love Paris in the winter when it drizzles,
I love Paris in the summer when it sizzles.

I love Paris every moment,
every moment of the year.
I love Paris, why, oh why do I love Paris?
Because my love is near.

****
Take the "A" Train (Duke Ellington)

You must take the A Train
To go to Sugar Hill way up in Harlem

If you miss the A Train
You'll find you've missed the quickest way to Harlem

Hurry, get on, now, it's coming
Listen to those rails a-thrumming (All Aboard!)

Get on the A Train
Soon you will be on Sugar Hill in Harlem
****

Spanish Harlem (Ben E King)

There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
A red rose up in Spanish Harlem
It is a special one, it's never seen the sun
It only comes out when the moon is on the run
And all the stars are gleaming
It's growing in the street right up through the concrete
But soft and sweet and dreamin'

There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
A red rose up in Spanish Harlem
With eyes as black as coal that look down in my soul
And starts a fire there and then I lose control
I have to beg your pardon
I'm going to pick that rose and watch her as she grows in my garden

I'm going to pick that rose and watch her as she grows in my garden

There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
La-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la-la
There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
La-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la-la
There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
****

Honolulu City Lights (Keola Beamer)

Looking out upon the city lights and the stars above the ocean,
Got my ticket for the midnight plane and its not easy to leave again.
Took my clothes and put them in the bag; try not to think just yet of
leaving.
Looking out into the city night and it's not easy to leave again.

(Chorus)
Each time Honolulu city lights stir up memories in me.
Each night Honolulu city lights bring me back again.
You are my island sunset; you are my island dream.

Put on my shoes and light a cigarette.
Wonderin' which of my friends will be here
Standin' with their leis around my neck.
It's not easy to leave again.

(Chorus)
Each time Honolulu city lights stir up memories in me.
Each night Honolulu city lights bring me back again.
Bring me back again.
****

Istanbul (Dario Moreno - In French)

Istanbul, Istanbul !

Istanbul Istanbul Istanbul Istanbul

Istanbul, Istanbul !

English version:

Istanbul was constantinople
Now it's istanbul, not constantinople
Been a long time gone, constantinople
Now it's turkish delight on a moonlit night

Every gal in constantinople
Lives in istanbul, not constantinople
So if you've a date in constantinople
She'll be waiting in istanbul

Even old new york was once new amsterdam
Why they changed it i can't say
People just liked it better that way

So take me back to constantinople
No, you can't go back to constantinople
Been a long time gone, constantinople
Why did constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the turks

Istanbul (istanbul)
Istanbul (istanbul)

Even old new york was once new amsterdam
Why they changed it i can't say
People just liked it better that way

Istanbul was constantinople
Now it's istanbul, not constantinople
Been a long time gone, constantinople
Why did constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the turks

So take me back to constantinople
No, you can't go back to constantinople
Been a long time gone, constantinople
Why did constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the turks

Birmingham Blues - Electric Light Orchestra

There is another, entirely different song called "Birmingham Blues", perhaps by the Charlie Daniels Band.
"I had me a fine woman back in Birmingham town
She took care of my money and she didn't play around
All I've got left now is a bad case of Birmingham blues..."

Also:
"Birmingham"- Randy Newman
"I Love L.A."- Randy Newman
"Doraville"- Atlanta Rhythm Section
"Statesboro Blues"- Allman Brothers
"Moon River"- written by Johnny Mercer, recorded by several artists (It is an actual place near Savannah GA, although in reality it's a tidal creek with a goat farm on it's shore)
