Your Christmas/New Year's Travel Plans

Fri Dec 21, 2007 10:03 pm

Any a.netters traveling somewhere exciting over Christmas or New Years?

I'm driving down with the family to Charleston, SC two days after Christmas to spend a couple days with some friends of the family. We'll drive back on Sunday and literally only hours after we get back into town, I'll be flying up to Jersey (well, into PHL) at visit a couple friends from school and celebrate New Years with them.

So what about you all? Traveling anywhere or is someone else traveling to visit you or no exciting plans?

Going to London to see some friends for a few days. That's it basically, apart from seeing the family (Argh) and stuff like that. New Years will probably be lazing about at home, then after that back to school on the 7th of Jan.

Spend Christmas at my house this year. Plenty of relatives coming over - including parents.

Will spend 3 days in Rome with my uncle - 27 - 29 December. Home for New Years with family.

Going to Ormond Beach for the gift exchange from my apartment Rockledge FL. I should be able to make it in 1H15min if traffic is not messed up on 95. I plan on leaving at 11 hoping to be there at 1230. I will try to get pics and do a mini report on here.

Seeing that I have nearly two weeks off, but have to work the Friday after Christmas, that kind-of snookers going away. I suppose I could have, if I'd put my mind to it, but to be honest I actually LIKE Christmas at home, despite the cold. There's always a great atmosphere. And I'm single, so I rarely have to cook a meal with all the invites.

I'll be spending Christmas Day with my best mate Les and his family in a quiet little village in the country. His dad is a great cook and will pull out all the stops and do a complete Christmas spread on the day.

But the highlight will be the first weekend of January. Les and myself are going to Finland for a long weekend, and taking-in a side-trip to the Ice Hotel in Sweden for the Saturday night. That should be fun!

Spending Christmas with my wife and son in the Isle of Man. Then flying back to England on Boxing Day to make ready to move into my new flat on Friday. Straight after that i will be hiring a van and driving to Lincolnshire to collect my furniture and hand the keys in to my wonderful landlady up there. A great shame I have to leave as I couldnt wish for nicer people!

It will be the first ever New Years Eve apart for my wife and I in 22 years, and I am not looking forward to it. I am on shift New Years Day so a quiet one for me.

Coming to HEL?
I just hope the proper winter arrives here in Up North before your trip, looks black & dark in Helsinki now, should be ok in Sweden where to Ice Hotel is though, it's north enough. An Irish friend of mine from Dublin coming to HEL for the New Year, the Ice Bar might be the only place where he can see ice  Wink

No, that was the original plan. We're flying to Tampere and then to Kiruna via Stockholm on the Saturday. It's years since I was in Helsinki and would love to go back, but the Ice Hotel is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We'll do Helsinki another time. Any tips for Tampere?

I'm working in Yorkshire on Christmas Eve but will only go in for an hour or so as the boss isn't in. Then I will trek over the Pennines to see a few friends in Lancashire, then drive down to London to my parents. Christmas Day I will spend with my family then go to LGW to see a friend and escape said family, before heading full circle back to Lancashire and Yorkshire on Boxing Day.

It's going to be a busy couple of days  biggrin

Tampere, the Manchester of Finland  Wink it even has an old nick name Manse! Nowadays Tampere is an easy going university town, though not sure where I would take any tourists in the middle of the winter... well the world's northernmost dolphinarium is there, and some good museums... and it takes only 1,5h to Helsinki by train  Wink
Btw, one of Tampere's satellite towns is called Nokia, the company started there.

Once there's plenty of snow that will do us fine . . .

At the moment you have to travel to Lapland to see snow.
Hopefully the whole country get some soon, would be so much nicer, less dark with the light-reflecting snow cover.

Fly down to MIA, then drive to Key West for the weekend before New Year's.

Currently in Smithers BC (YYD), arrived here after a delayed trip through YVR on December 22nd and will be doing the reverse flight back to Calgary on December 28th.

Not looking forward to the rattle-trap AC Jazz DH3 on YYD-YVR... they are truly an awful flight experience every time.
