PC Advice: Building One From "scratch"

Mon Dec 24, 2007 3:54 am

Here's the deal... a month or so ago my Athlon XP 2100+ machine died, taking one hard drive and the mobo with it. I decided that since most of the components were still good (brand new 500W power supply bought after the failure, both optical drives, floppy, IDE Zip 100, case, a butt ton of fans) I would replace the necessary 'guts' with new parts. I wanted to give it some later upgrade-ability, but I'm on a bit of a budget, so what I've chosen is:

Mobo: Asus M2N-E SLI (It has 4 SATA and 2 PATA/IDE ports, which I need)
Proc: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000
RAM: Mushkin 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 PC800
HD: Western Digital 250GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
Video: XFX GeForce 8400GS 512MB PCI-E 16x

(I'm not playing anything resembling the latest games on it, that will be ample for what I need)

I've installed the OS (Windows XP) from scratch a few times on new hard drives before, but never had to deal with setting up the BIOS and all that stuff.

How would I go about doing that? I do not do ANY overclocking... if I want to go faster I'll buy faster stuff.

Thanks in advance.  Smile

Should be right. I doubt the bios will require any significant tinkering.

Install the hardware and fire it up. There will probably be motherboard drivers to install but no big deal. The BIOS is not a problem either, you will get good documentation with Asus.
Expect to use a lot more electricity with that chip.
