Firefox Yes Or No

Thu Dec 27, 2007 5:41 pm

I have been thinking about getting Firefox for awhile now and finally did it. I can't believe I waited so long. A-net finally jumped the shark with the ads that scroll into the forum text. I was ok with the old type ads that were not annoying but the in your face bullshit really ticked me off. Well I got Firefox with Ad block and see non of it now. I highly suggest you get Firefox

P.S. A-net runs about 5 times faster too!  Smile

FF has become more bloated over the releases. I have been using it since version 0.6. In my experience, IE7 on WinXP is faster to load some sites. Also, the more plug-ins placed into FF, the slower it gets. I have been playing with a FF spin-off, Flock. Flock is a web 2.0 version of FF2.

FF is way better than IE and has been for a long time. From the developer perspective FF's Firebug is much more useful and has a nice head start on MS's Developer Toolbar. However as a developer it can be a challenge developing content that is consistent in appearance an behavior acrso IE6, IE7 and FF. When IE6 is phased out I think FF and IE will start to converge a little more. IE currently handles certain CSS, and JS in peculiar ways.

When I used IE or Microsoft Internet Explorer I used to get a up to 50-100 viruses adware etc, a week no kidding. And this was with a new Pentium 4 best OS and up to date software and security updates. And no i wasn't surfing porn or sites that are virus prone.

The simple truth is ID theft is easier to perform on IE browsers, If you like it fine but keep in mind that these days you need the best protection against all of these problems we encounter daily or weekly.

Firefox is the best free security browser out there and have been using it for 3-4 yrs now and I have less adware and malware virus problems.

If you can't view certain sites on Moxilla Firefox use Avant Browser its also free

http://www.avantbrowser.com/download.htmlAvant has better security than IE anyday you still have to keep your IE on the computer but the Avant Browser works off of IE. Or use a compatible browser with IE or better than IE.

Firefox may not be the best fast browser out there but its best used on sites where you don't want hackers to see your personal information (ie..Bank accounts, other private account info.) A lot of the info from FF is encrypted and it is a Netscape browser.

IE any version is a magnet for hackers your bound to get more viruses etc.. I dont care whats faster- Avant is better for me to use if I have to go on a site that requires IE type of browser and somewhat better security than IE like I said.

All these suggestions were recommemnded from a work buddy who is a avid hacker and gives me tips on performance.

Firefox is vastly superior to IE, but I know people who will not adapt to tabbed browsing and stick with IE. The only problem I have with FF is that some news sites which have video need IE. When you click the video link, it is supposed to open Windows Media Player, but does not in FF. Same with embedded video on some sites and pop-ups of larger versions of pictures. Otherwise FF is terrific!

Add me to the Firefox list ... I've been using it for about a couple years now, ever since Internet Exploder made you start clicking on flash and media in order for them to work ... and haven't looked back.

I still have to fire up Exploder for certain websites, as others do ... but otherwise Firefox works quite well.

Especially without any ads. Big grin

Hi,
Seems to be totally against the trend, but I’m under IE7 (Vista) with the free IE7 pro plugin. No virus, no ad, no malware. I figure it’s also the way you surf and manage your computer that mitigates the risk.

IE7 under Vista is by the way pretty efficient and secure. That said, Safari (Mac) rendering engine seems to be smother than IE

I use FF in Win, Safari or Camino on my Mac and FF in Linux. Though Firefox is a resource hog in Windows, it is slower to start up, it generally renders sites much better, and quicker.

AdBlock Plus is a definite. I never see that many adverts anymore, no annoying Flash ads, and no more of those fake hyperlinks that cause balloons to appear with "helpful" ads.

If I ever need to use IE for any reason, I use the IE plugin for FF so I never need to quit the browser. Personally though, I do like Opera browser a lot, however, the interface is just very awkward and not intuitive. It works very well on my mobile however.

And I have used Firefox since it was called Phoenix  Smile.

I have both because the geeks in my family kept telling me it was "way better"...I installed it and am frankly bemused as to what the fuss is all about, many sites load slower in FF and I now use IE7 in preference to FF.

I have no intrusive ad issues on a.net and never have because i have IE7 set up that way.

Trust me, if FF was better than IE7 I would use it and I know the nerds will shake their heads and offer prayers for my slavation but that is just the facts.

The answer is the same as the one for "Why is Linux free?" A couple of blokes in funny shirts and with far too much pizza in their stomachs decided they'd had enough and wanted something better than Internet Exploder. Add to that the fact that IE never actually conquered the leading market share, but was bundled with and unremovably integrated into Windows "for the users' convenience"... which had the fully-intended, but of course purely coincidental "side effect" of razing Netscape Navigator.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

I use IE but primarily it's because I'm lazy and also it's required for my work. I may load it on my standby computer and see how well it works.
The main problem I've had with IE is migrating from IE6 to IE7 and then deciding i don't like IE7 and removing it....that can cause some problems that can't be fixed without a windows reload. If you do this what you get is a messages that says IE has to shut down because the file iertutil.dll cannot be found, although when you look it's right where it's supposed to be.

Doing a windows reload is no big deal now that Klaus finally convinced me to buy a USB hard drive and the price was right-a 320gb Western Digital number for right around a C-note.

Its widely thought that Microsoft closed the door on Firefox with IE7 as far as security goes. The only real reason to pick FF over IE7 would be for specific extensions. I still use FF but it has been far from problem free. You guys who think FF will save you from viruses and is so much better than IE7 are woefully misinformed.

I honestly don't know what his personal opinion on IE7 is perhaps your right but we don't talk computers frequently. Its usually when he visits me and my wife he goes thru and tells us if we have something wrong with our computer or we consult him when there was a occasional crash or annoying virus we couldn't get rid of usually once a year or less frequently than that.

Having said that Maybe IE7 is much better than I give it credit for I do have it on the computer and use it once in a while but mostly with our add on browser Avant I have been happy. I did have more problems with IE6 for sure even with the latest windows updates eventually my computer would run in to a problem. I guess with the reputation of older IE's being easier to hack I had stereotypes against IE. Once you get in to the habit of using something you get comfortable I guess. Using tabbed browsing wasn't so bad once I got used to it.

However I have to say I strongly stand in my belief that Moxilla Firefox is superiro to IE when it comes to security just from personal experiance almoost 4 yrs use on my part. It does have it's annoying quirks I do agree with that thats why I use it for secure sites as long as Moxilla is accepted. When using streaming online radio I do usually have to go with a IE based or add on browser though.

My father in Law has always been a Netscape fan though although he would recommend Microsoft products he does have a snobbish kind of dislike for Bill Gates.

I have no doubt your secirity basis is covered. I have heard good things about Linux I just never used it myself.

You guys who think FF will save you from viruses and is so much better than IE7 are woefully misinformed.

Of course, online behaviour is paramount to security. But Firefox will help, not least because it's not from everyone's favourite enemy Microsoft, less widespread and hence less of a target.

Safari just isn't as compatible with the web. Firefox works on damn near every site on the web.

I recommend a few moments' reading up on the Acid2 test.  Wink One issue I have is alternative text for images; those little windows that pop up when you place the mouse cursor over an image. Why does IE do that wrong and why do so many people accept that as a standard?
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Just to be clear most computers will eventually succumb to viruses no matter what OS you have etc...But my 3-4 yrs experiance with FF has made me realize viruses are less and I'm more protected. Sometimes Its just a matter of preference you can't knock someone that has benefited from a product. Maybe you don't like FF but that doesn't mean we all share the same views. If it isn't broke why change?

Firefox may not be the best fast browser out there but its best used on sites where you don't want hackers to see your personal information (ie..Bank accounts, other private account info.) A lot of the info from FF is encrypted and it is a Netscape browser.

And yes I don't think IE7 is better than FF. IE was designed after 9/11 so some government agencies can monitor suspicious internet activity if needed I need to do some research before I believe it. Up to IE6 Most hackers, terrorists would be able to hack in to IE6 and below with out a problem. I don't know how IE7 measures up I know it was improved but virus proof I doubt it. Even if IE7 is that much better I prefer FF If it isn't broke why change? Besides I don't like the new design and look of IE7.

When it comes down to it the choice is a matter of preference you can't knock that.

Great point! More an more, Microsoft software is becoming synonymous with 'suck'. IE7 has been much faster in my opinion. Ever try Opera?
