Bringing hockey back to its roots with an outdoor game...who else is watching Sid the Kid on New Years day?

I'm going to watch it, but not because of Cindy Crosby. I didn't get to watch the Heritage Classic up in Edmonton a few seasons back, so I've really wanted to watch an outdoor game.

By the way the NHL has named the event, NHL Winter Classic 2008, this doesn't look to be a one-time event. There's previously been talk of doing a game @ Yankees Stadium between the Rags and Isles. I'm guessing that if it really is going to be an annual thing, it may switch back and forth between US and Canadian locations.

They'll need to hurry up... Yankee Stadium is getting torn down this year.

I personally would prefer to see the Original Six teams playing in these games. For classic old time hockey you should be using classic teams. Perhaps the Wings and the Rangers? Or Wings and Montreal, Bruins and Rangers would be a classic match ups as well. Here's to wishful thinking.

I think ya mean Sid the Kid Crosby?  Wink

I don't know if I'll be able to watch this. I don't live anywhere near my hometown or Buffalo, and I don't know if ESPN will broadcast this game or not...

Go Pens!!!!

I'm in CA and NBC is airing the game out here. It's probably being broadcast nationally.

Both squads are wearing throwbacks (Unfortunately, they're the RBK Edge uniforms), the Pens in the powder blue they wore from '67-'74 and the Sabres wearing the whites they wore from '70-'96. I think the Sabres need to return to this uniform and logo (The Buffaslug sucks), while the Pens should never these uniforms see the light of day again (Although I would not be surprised if both designs show up next season as third jerseys, as next season teams will be allowed to have them again.).

Hockey the way it was meant to be played.....outdoors and in the elements.

Looks like the Zamboni and the ice chicks will get a work out today.....and it is on NBC as a national telecast...nice change of pace amongst the 12-odd hours of bowl games today.

Pretty amazing atmosphere for this game, its too bad about all the delays with the snow build up.

Would love to hear comments about it from the point of view of non-hockey fans.

The new Yankee Stadium is due to open Opening Day Spring 2009...... but like all new stadiums in recent years.. the old one will be torn down right after the previous season ends to make way for other projects. In many cases just hours after the last fan walks out.

Does the game "count" as a regular game with regard to players getting points for goals/assists and the Pens/Sabres both getting pts in the standings for the OT play?

I watched, although I'm already a hockey fan and a Pens fan, so the game was on my "Must watch" list for yesterday. Thought it was a GREAT atmosphere and even people I work with who aren't hockey fans who saw the game were entranced by it. Smart move by the NHL, I think - provide something out of the ordinary and use it to highlight two of the NHL's "faces" for years to come - Crosby and Ryan Miller.

My only caution would be to not have it every year - maybe make it an every other year event. If done every year it very much would, I think, lose its specialness. Make it a big affair every other year. I would love, LOVE to see a 'Canes-Thrashers Winter Classic held in Charlotte sometime in the future.

I quite enjoyed the game, but was disappointed that Buffalo did not prevail in the shootout.

If the weather in Charlotte is anything like it is now in Atlanta, you could hold it this week......

He is well aware of it...he has to listen to me moon on about his lips every time I see Sid the Kid on TV. Then we have a good laugh about it. I was horrified to see Crosby in a fight. What if those beautiful lips were hurt?!?  Wink

Thanks for the pics...he really is a good looking guy, although he's awfully young!

Well keep in mind I'm in Raleigh, not Charlotte (would never, ever live in that place!) but if it's any indicator Raleigh tonight will get down into the low 30s, teens with windchill factor. Plus if you can have an outdoor preseason exhibition game in Vegas, you can have a "Winter Classic" type game just about anywhere.

Still warmer than it's supposed to be here tonight. Right now, it's 26F where I live just south of ATL, with lows in the mid-teens.

I heard about that one this morning. Almost got postponed due to rain, then they had to deal with all sorts of insects.
