Call Of Duty 4, What A Surprise!

Wed Jan 02, 2008 2:29 am

I find myself fighting through a town I couldn't get to in real life! That would be the town of Pripyat! I won't spoil the game for those that might be thinking about buying or renting it but I will tell you it is more difficult than previous Call of Duty games I've played. Maneuvering through the town was pretty cool. If I make it back to the meet scheduled for this year I wonder if they did a good enough job that I will feel a sense of Deja Vu? It was cool to fight there though!

Yea CoD4 is pretty amazing. Was the town, the sniper flashback? What console do you have it for?

I have it on PC. Awesome graphics. Great gameplay, maybe a bit over-dramatized and a tad short, but probably the best shooter in a long time.

I thought it was pretty cool.

Pripyat, the Ferris Wheel, the Claymores...

Now you have to play it on-line. That is where the fun begins.

I've tried on line play before and just can't get into it. It's like flight sims. Without that peripheral vision the whole thing loses a lot of its effect. Plus I like knowing who I'm playing with even if only for a few minutes. It helps to know the personality so you can estimate what they they will do.

Yup. Finished all the levels. Trick to that, when you come off the rope, you will run and bear left. THere will be a small grassy area to your right. Kneel and take out a couple of troops and then shag ass through them, bearing to the right into an apartment bulding...

Yeah.. that's a bitch of a level. It took me 3 or 4 sessions to totally beat it; ~4 hours to beat it on Veteran. That level is probably one of the toughest I've ever played, on any game. Veteran took a whole lot of patience/determination..

If you want my advice on that level, it's the same that I gave to Vic. Pick off as many guys as you can from some cover near the Ferris Wheel. When that gets a little tough, move to the corner of the stage which faces the Wheel. You can use that for a while; it has some protection and good firing visibility. Lastly, when that gets a little tough; fall around to the back of the stage. You can pick guys off through the railing, and no baddies spawn in behind you; so you can focus on the front. (Be sure to listen though as a few dogs tend to sneak up on you back there.)

Hell, there's one level where I put a claymore in front of their "dog house." I got tired of them ripping my throat out.

Hmmm... I've heard that a lot. On my first run through (on Normal), I got it the first try. When I tried it in Veteran however, it took me 10-20 tries.

My brother got a 360 and Call of Duty 4 for Christmas. I played it a bit and the graphics are awesome, the story is good too. I love the part where you carry the top half of the Major around, very realistic.

He's already finished it on easy though.

The scenery in the Chernobyl level is pretty amazing, they even modeled in that famous empty swimming pool and stuff like that.

COD4 is alot harder than 2 or 3 no question. I'm on the level where you have to take out the 4 tanks then run back down the hill to get to the LZ in time. Damn hard level.

I made it on the first attempt, just have to anticipate when the flag is going to die down.

I finished it last night. It was kind of short compared to the ones before. On top of that they had 3 stories running concurrently before, this time only two and they killed off one of those. Maybe because of the graphics efforts? The first encounter reminded me too much of a SOCAL game, almost a copy in fact. I'm going to give it a whack on veteran in a few days to make it a bit harder since my memory is still fresh. The hardest part I had was the extraction scene in Pripyat, I lost count at how many tries it took. I kept getting myself picked off from behind.

After you set Mac down next to the tree and you get his Claymores, shag ass and place them along the likely approaches. I get back and get about 10 meters from Mac on the small rise. The BG's won't come in behind you, but you have to watch your right flank.

If it wasn't from the dodgem cars it was directly across the Ferris wheel. I finally went to the dodgems and hid out behind the cars while picking off the advancing bad guys with enfilade fire. When the extraction chopper set down I retrieved the captian and hoofed it around the Ferris wheel and into the chopper.

The other thing about the claymores, on the way to the pick up the cpt had you place a claymore in front of a door, just before the encounter with the helicopter. Claymores were not designed for inside use. The back blast at close range can kill. My training with claymores was that they were to be used when you were pretty sure you would have a group of enemy in the kill zone. Hence at the pick point, placing them in the obvious lanes of advance is a good idea, but if only one soldier is in the kill zone when it remotely goes off, it's a pretty big waste of explosive.

The real McCoy has a back blast, just forgot how much.

I didn't waste my time planting one by the door. You're going to get hosed anyways.

There's another level where you have to use the mini gun in a downed Blackhawk, I had fun hosing the Mi-8's. Shot a few of them down. I got pissed in this level, as after you have been killed several times, you know where the BG's are. So I called in air support and put several air strikes on their posits. To no vail, when you are hauling ass to make the extraction point, you apparently step on the proverbial ant pile...

The best part of this game is the AC-130 gunner, I played that over and over. I can't get into the multiplayer though, just not as good as Battlefield 2 for online play.

It really can. I just can't help myself. I have done the "Prestige" mode where you rollover your challenges and whatnot. It basically just gives you a cooler badge and forces you to unlock all of the upgrades/guns again.

I'm a level 49 I think on my second time through. Not sure if I'm going to roll it over again...

Prestige Mode (from Wiki) - "At Level 55, the player can then gain more XP from the game until they unlock Prestige Mode, which is a feature only available in the console versions of the game. In Prestige mode, the player can trade in their rank, all unlocked weapons and completed challenges and start over at level 1, in exchange for a special in-game insignia by their name. The player can then rank up and trade in their rank with Prestige mode again, up to ten times, with a different insignia awarded each time. This effectively gives the player 605 total ranks to achieve.[6] Leaderboard stats (kills, deaths, playing time, etc.) are not affected by Prestige mode."

So Vic - what are your favorite perks/guns? I'm partial to the G36C with the Red Dot sight, or the AK74U with the silencer. I almost always use the Stopping Power, Steady Aim and Claymores or Bandolier perks. I really like the Martydom perk, but I find myself using Steady Aim because of the edge it gives you in close-in quick engagements where you're not using your sights.

When you're that low, I've found the M16A3 to be a good heavy hitter, but the lack of full auto is pretty big drawback. The M4 carbine should be unlocked for you pretty soon. That's a damn good gun. MP5 is not bad, but it's stopping power is very limited. With the S.P. perk on you can do pretty well with it, though I prefer the AK-74U.

If you find yourself dying a lot, the Juggernaut perk can buy you a few extra seconds in firefights.

So it looks like you have the M4 Carbine unlocked already; give it a whirl and let me know what you think.

As far as MG's go, I've found that the RPD hits harder then the SAW, though the M60E4 takes the prize for hitting power and accuracy. It's got a slower rate of fire then the others, but it still comes out on top. The only advantage the SAW has is rate of fire.

Check this link for a full list of what you have to look forward to:

Yeah that was another one I had to chuckle at. I was out of the service just prior to the Blackhawks intro but a friend of mine who served as a crew chief on one in Desert Storm said that the mini gun will not work on aircraft battery power alone, an engine w/generator has to be turning. Maybe they have corrected this in later versions since that would seem to be the perfect defense weapon for a downed aircraft in hostile territory. UH60 may be able to shed some light.

Yep, I found the easiest way to do it was just to place one air strike after another, left and right of your path down the hill than then follow the air attacks danger close to the bottom.

Finished the game yesterday, those last few missions were pretty hectic. Getting into the control room was one of the hardest levels i've ever played on any video game. Thank god for checkpoints!

I thought the little epilogue level after the credits was pretty neat too.

The online games are pure gas. Screwed up thing is when you run into a clan with comms; I got wasted at least 20 times. Must get the Bluetooth.

Yeah, the headsets can make a difference. I don't know about the PS3 version, but the 360 version just got a patch a little while ago which created a new game mode - "Mercenary Team Deathmatch", which only allows individual players - no parties/clans allowed. It's a nice way to get into a team game where everyone is matched up randomly. Really ensures a fair fight.

I was on fire the other night. In a MTDM round I went 36 kills for only 3 deaths. The P-90 with a silencer in close quarters is an absolute killer.

I pick them up every time I see them. I have been sticking to the M-4. My best streak so far was 12 kills with 1 death. I like the Claymores more than the RPGs. That Headquarters match in the container yard is friggin brutal.

It's a great game. Too bad our 360 at work is MIA.

The RPG's are pretty useless against enemies. I don't even bother with them for choppers. If you're near a mounted machine gun, get on that and rock and roll on the chopper. A 3-4 second burst will take them out like a swatted fly.
