Travelling By Bus/train From SYD To MEL Or BNE

Thu Jan 03, 2008 3:52 am

I normally travel by air in Australia domestically. However I would like a change this time. Taking the bus/train will be interesting.

I plan to travel from Sydney to Melbourne or Sydney to Brisbane by bus or train in late April 2008. Please advise how/how much is it on all classes. Also what's the cheapest fare?

Thanks

This is all you need....

CountryLink for the train. CountryLink is the NSW Railways and (before you ask) it is the only company that is operating trains between SYD-BNE and SYD-MEL. Classes available are Sleeper on overnight services (on day service the compartments seats 3 (First Class non reclining bench type seat) and you could be sitting backwards), First Class and Economy Class, the only difference being the seats, you pay for all meals etc on board regardless of class. Bonus too, if there is any trackwork on along the route when you decide to travel, you'll also get to ride a bus!  Big grin

For riding the bus, you can't go past The Big Doggy, again all you need to know is here.

Personally having ridden the XPT and detesting bus travel, I'd  airplane .....you'd probably get the airfare cheaper than the above and have less hassle.

The train can be mighty painful.... I'd suggest you go for say half the time and fly the rest, then you can go on a regional airline too. If you were going that way, you should probably go to Melbourne as regional NSW to BNE is very expensive.

If you do take the train I'd definitly go first class, as mean as it sounds then all you deal with is harmless little old people, and you don't get near the riff raff. Single mothers with 5 kids under the age of 10, all of whom are yelling and screaming for whatever, whining about bored they are. It is never ending (until you get off).

Whatever you do, have fun in Oz!!

the only train trip worth taking for inter state travel is The Indian Pacific or The Ghan. My suggestion is to stay off the rails and road and travel by air.

Hire a car and drive it. Very good roads and a couple of decent stops along the way. Maybe go via the coast from Sydney to Melbourne. There's a great pub in Tarthra that's worth stopping in for a beer at

Go one step further and hire a Camper. There are lots of one way deals available too from as little as a $1 a day and in some cases fuel thrown in as well. Can't find the link at the moment (on another laptop) but will as soon as I can find it.

If you really want to take a train take the Tilt Train from Brisbane up to Rockhampton or Mackay or Townsville. It's not overly fast but still relatively new. But whatever you do don't take it between Townsville and Cairns (or the other way obviously) as that is really slow and painful - the track really needs upgrading between those cities but hasn't been done as it would cost a fortune owing to the terrain.

I recently did Adelaide-Melbourne redeye on a Greyhound coach wasn't as bad as I was expecting. The coach was almost empty with double the legroom of an aircraft seat plenty of room to spread out. I can't speak for SYD-MEL but the stops along SYD-BNE are very tourist orientated and your coach is sure to be packed to rafters with Backpackers something I would avoid.

If your going by Countrylink Train whatever you do don't buy a First Class ticket it is a waste of money I did Sydney-Canberra-Sydney by Xplorer in First. It was cramped had to buy food which tasted terrible. The only train experience ive done which I recommoned is QR Tiltrain in Business Class which is very affordable only $150 Brisbane - Rockhampton.

I did think about adding that bit of information in my post, thanks QFA380.  Wink However, you neglected to say that the single mothers AND their 5 kids under 10 also talk like wharfies suffering from tourettes!!!!  rotfl

yes  VERY TRUE! Now either of those would be the trip.... Great Southern Rail I'd certainly love to do the Indian Pacific.

Did the Cairns Tilt Train - yes all 25 hours of it, from Brisbane all the way to Cairns a couple of years ago. It was an experience, but one I wouldn't do again. Should have really done it on The Sunlander.....

Petrol in the UK has just gone above £1per litre, so $1.50 does not sound to bad to us brits, however, its not as good as the $1.10 that we where paying 9 months ago when we where driving around QLD.

I always thought that trains in Australia are very clean/nice.

I took one from Singapore to KL in June 2007. Unfortunately the train was dirty and it smelt funny. And you get some wierd people.
