Is It Okay To Drink Beer After Expiration Date?

Fri Jan 04, 2008 5:21 am

Hey everyone,

This is a question I guess for those beer drinkers out there. I just turned 21 in November and have just started to have a few beers seeing that I can not drink during school time (yes some of you know I go to a Christian College). Well during breaks we are allowed to drink and so I have had my first couple of beers over Christmas Break. My question is, can you drink a beer after expiration date and not get sick? I just feel like I had a really bad tasting beer tonight (Red Stripe) and the 4 numbers on it were 4207 but dont know if these are the expiration numbers. Anyone got a say for this?

By the way, I have drank just Fosters (at Outback Steak House), Red Stripe (tonight), Amstel Light, and Bud Select so far. Any recomendations out there for something I can find fairly easy in the states? I am about taste, not about getting drunk.

Thanks guys!

All piss beers.........

You say you're about taste so go find a brew pub or a beer store that sell micro brewed beers. It depends on what you like..? IPA, Ales, Porters, Stouts....

Right in your home town..... looks like a good selection... talk to the staff and brewmasters

Stick to wine coolers and Zima if you're concerned with expiration dates. It's not like milk or meat.
This place is cashed, so I'm out. Someone PM me when A.net comes back.

Yeah I do not know what I like yet, that is why I am askin for ideas. Out of the ones I drank so far, Amstel Light seemed to be the best tasting. What do you prefer?

Think of the expiration date more like a best by date.

It is still safe after that date, but it might be a tad skunky.

Not that Red Stripe ever tastes good.

That has nothing to do with the expiry date.

I have had Pilsner Urquell (bottled) that was almost a year past its best by date with no side effects (apart from getting it cheaper).

I don't buy beer if the "best before end" date is not *at least* 6 months away.
The fresher the beer, the better. Beer approaching it's expiration date tastes stale at best. It really is noticeable.

Local micro brews? Or Beck's. While Beck's is only mediocre, it's a good "first-timer" German style pilsener which is available basically everywhere.

There's two mistakes right there...  Wink There is a reason we export Fosters! And Outback Steak House is no more Australian than I am American... Big grin

Just remember with the taste, that it is YOUR taste not ours that counts. What I like, you might detest. Just experiment with the different beers, you'll find one that you like. Very sensible there not to overdo it as well.

It may be safe, but it may not taste as good. Beyond 3-4 months after packaging, almost all beers will get 'skunky' due to packaging leakage, exposure to light, temperature changes and lack of preservatives. It is best to get beer with the longest sell by date or most recent 'born on' or packaging date.

I've done it with Tecate and Miller Light. Tecate was so so when it was expired, I used some extra lime juice.
The Miller tasted awful, even more watered down with even less flavor.

THATS FUNNY.

Do what I did when I was in high school(early eighties), buy a 6 pack of ok tasting beer(at the time it was Molson's) and then get a case of cheap stuff(at the time Pabst's Blue Ribbon). after drinking 2 of the "good" beers, the "bad" beers tasted ok. Good way to save money. And It was about getting drunk not the taste.

Most US brewers recommend drinking the beer within 120 days of packaging. By your standard you wouldn't even drink it if it was bottled that day.

Quoting CaptOveur (Reply 5):

There is nothing that will kill you. The oldest beer I have drank was 56 years old. However. Beer oxidizes and gets nasty after a while. Depending on the conditions it will get bad faster. I have had 25 year old beer that has been kept in the dark and cold for the entire 25 years and it was ok. I have had stuff that was a month old and left out in the sun and it was gross.

Be weary of odd imports in the USA (probably everywhere) because they tend not to move and they sit around and get old. Then they taste nasty and people think it is a bad beer. I have been in bars with beer expired by as much as 7 years. In Detroit you see lots of stores with old beer because they buy it cheap from "unknown sources".

For US beers there are three main types of date coding.

AB is the born on date, which is the day it was bottled or canned.
Miller/Pabst (which is a lot of different beers) use this calender, this is an example: 02158. It would mean that the beer in that bottle or can expires on February 15, 2008. The beer was bottled 120 day before that date.
Other US brewers (City, Pittsburgh, Lion, etc) use this calender: 32607 which would mean it was packaged on the 326th day of 2007.

I pay attention to dates because I find lots of expired beer and I make sure that I don't buy it. A lot of people will buy a slow moving brand and think it sucks and tell all there friends how much it sucks, but in reality they bought an expired beer. Even the best beer doesn't last forever.

In that case you miss out on some of the best beers brewed in Germany...many smaller bavarian breweries do not add preservatives, leading to a limited storage life and "best before end" dates that are hardly ever more than 2 months away.

I totally agree that fresh beer is generally better though.

checkmark  The older, the worse - but still drinkable unless over two years. Beer that's been stored warm will get skunkier faster than say a beer that's been in the back of your fridge for awhile.

Now, as for what you should drink is a whole another question. If you don't like it there's no point in drinking it. Drinking beer is one of my favorite things to do. About once a month I might pick up some fancy six-pack but PBR is my daily driver. It's relatively inexpensive, I like the crispness of it, it's widely available, and the hangovers aren't bad. Down a dozen Euro (or fancy domestic) beers one night and the next morning you'll be wanting to drill a hole in your head to relieve the pressure. Hangovers from mass-produced domestics are much more manageable.

You should drink whatever it is that you like. Even if it's light beer. (We all have to start somewhere  Wink ) Try a few brands of every style available, if you don't find one you like then beer isn't your thing; maybe wine or spirits is?

It only indicates that the expiration date differs - if anything. Here in Germany you won't have a problem buying beer which "Best before end" date reads 6/08 or 7/08.
With that being said, German beer usually contains more hops which acts as a preservative agent.

That's an european thing. Many beers there have a year of declared shelf life.

Skunky taste is not caused by temperature, but UV light. Just try to leave a bottle of beer packaged in clear or green bottle outside now and taste it after a couple of days.

It's probably some of everything. I usually drink canned beer so UV isn't a factor. But it still gets skunky. If you take a beer and leave it in your garage for 18 months and then put one in your fridge for the same time the refrigerated one will be skunky, but not as bad.

Yeah, but those micro brews aren't available at my local supermarket in Berlin. Plus the German purity law prohibits preservatives.
If some micro brews limit the period of time until their beer aproaches the expiration date, it's their cup of tea (or mug of beer).

You should always have your beer tested by a qualified lab. I happen to know of a good beer testing lab. All you do is send 6 original, sealed samples of any questionable brew to this address:

Brewers Research Laboratories
1269 Borracho Pl.
Cucamonga, Ca.

They'll get back to you if it's no good.

You should drink whatever it is that you like. Even if it's light beer. (We all have to start somewhere Wink ) Try a few brands of every style available, if you don't find one you like then beer isn't your thing; maybe wine or spirits is?

Very true.

I prefer Corona but like Alaskan Amber.

You should always have your beer tested by a qualified lab. I happen to know of a good beer testing lab. All you do is send 6 original, sealed samples of any questionable brew to this address:

Brewers Research Laboratories
1269 Borracho Pl.
Cucamonga, Ca.

There is a more efficient one in NZ!!!

So are you trying to say that expiration dates do not mean a thing? Give me a break man, I am knew to this okay gosh!

Expiration dates in many cases are simply a means for the manufacturer to limit liability...

"Oh (insert favorite brewery here) Breweries are so sorry you drank a case, decided to drive, and had a head on with a family in a van... ... but the case you drank was a year out of date so don't blame us"

Wouldn't change a thing the alcohol would be in there no matter what.

True, but beer is a food product and doesn't last forever. It will last a long time, but it loses it delicious qualities.

I'm a big fan of the Redhook ESB myself; you should check it out.

Their Longhammer IPA is pretty damn good as well. If it wasn't for the stash of beer I got for Christmas (Some family members know what the perfect gift for me is.), I'd go pick up a six pack of it.

Quoting NoUFO (Reply 31):
With that being said, German beer usually contains more hops which acts as a preservative agent.

Many of the American microbreweries in the Pacific Northwest are pretty aggressive with the hops as well. Some of the other microbreweries have some heavily hopped beers as well. Samuel Adams has one right now, Sam Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner that is very hoppy, but without the bitterness some hoppy beers has. Or I'm beginning to like hoppy beers and don't notice the bitterness anymore (My favorite microbrew, Sweetwater 420, is an extra pale ale that is hoppy in the style of many West Coast microbrewed ales.).

As for drinking past the expiration date, it really depends on beer style. Some lighter beer styles will lose carbonation to a level that after a few months the beer will taste flat. I've seen canned and bottled sodas suffer the same thing. Other less carbonated (And higher alcohol content) styles of beer actually stand up to long term storage and like with some wines and spirits, get better with age. But if it's a month past the date on the bottle, more than likely, it's still going to be good.

Ok a different example...

"Gee XYZ Batteries is sorry your family burned up in a fire.... But the XYZ battery in the smoke detector was a year out of date when installed so don't blame us"

It wasn't, generally, the brewmasters that put expiration dates on beer - it was the lawyers....
