The Airline Lost My Crew Baggage

Sat Jan 05, 2008 12:43 am

The other night I was flying back to MCO nonstop from DTW on NW. I was flying non-rev (i'm a pilot for Delta) on a Delta codeshare and the flight attendant had a problem with my using the EMPTY closet on the 757. She made me gate check my bag. I've never had a problem using the closets before when i non-rev.

For some reason my bag never made it on the plane although it was right in the jetway with the appropriate markings. In fact, none of the gate checked items ever made it on the plane. Wouldn't it be obvious that there are things still sitting on the jetway when you went to close it? After the flight down I personally went down to the first cargo bay of the plane and there were no items.
I was furious that they left my bag back at DTW

Any people have similar situations, especially pilots?

Respectfully, if you were not the only one (I assume not if other gate checks didn't get loaded) then I don't know that you have much reason to be upset at the F/A.

I have only had one "stupid" bag issue; at LCY-CPH on an SK Dash8, 100% load, but only 16 bags came out.

90 mins later we found out why; only bags for pax connecting at CPH had been loaded. An error somewhere led SK to believe that by some bizarre coincidence, no-one with CPH as a final destination had checked a bag.

Despite multiple daily flights from LCY (i was on the first one out) my bag arrived 2 days later, having come off a BA flight from LHR.

Weird.

It's not really the FA's fault. She had it tagged and put where it was supposed to be. If none of the gate checked bags made it that means the ramper never came up to check for them. If they were left inside the door on the jetway then whomever pulled the jetway back from the aircraft also dropped the ball since he/she should have seen them there and alerted the pushback driver. As to the empty closet, it's the crews choice whether to put your bag in there or not. Just because your a non rev doesn't mean they have to extend the courtesy to you.

Wow. Well you're off to a bang, aren't you?

BTW, from what you conveyed, it doesn't seem like it was her fault, but that of the rampers. Also, flying as a non-rev does not extend you the right to use a closet for your bag.

How old are you? 21-25 and a pilot for Delta? Did you complain to the airline so that the flight attendant could "loss" her job? Why did you post this in Non-Av? If you want responses from "especially pilots" try one of the aviation related forums.

Hmm...he was able to edit his flight attendant comment out, but not provide a reply to any of our comments.  scratchchin

I'm with the Harlot on this one...

Where is ANC's BS flagpole?

Mate, IF you really are crew you've just possibly ensured (thanks to your edited out comment) you'll be losing more than your luggage next time you non rev..should your real life ID get out. I can see you stuck in an airport for days.... laughing

Alright, this post is to clear some things up.

Yes, I am a regional airline pilot. The minimum age to be hired for the regionals is 21.
Any time I do fly non rev, I usually have my flight bags with me and i've never had any crew tell me I could not use the closet on an aircraft.

And yes I did edit the flight attendant comment out because I realized that comment was posted due to anger on my part.

I posted this just to see if anybody had any stories similar to this.

I wish some people's posts would not be directed so negatively. We are only human. I posted this in non-aviation because I figured people would rant about this and I didn't want to clutter the main thread. If people cannot have a nice reply, then honestly, don't even bother to post anything.

Then you're not a Delta pilot, are you? You're a Skywest or Pinnacle or ExpressJet or whatever pilot. Why exaggerate? That's plenty to be proud of.

Perhaps you should have taken your own advice before you wished job loss on the flight attendant who was not really responsible for your bag not making it onto the flight.

You should learn that anybody who comes on here and seems to be too full of themselves quickly gets cut down. Was the point of your post to see if other pilots have experienced the same problem, or to come on here and announce, "Look at me! I'm a DELTA (I mean, Pinnacle) pilot!!"?

I'm a pilot for ASA which is part of Delta Connection.

My intention was not to boast or brag about Delta or anything like that. I just wanted to compare similar experiences.

And I realized where I was wrong so I tried my best to correct that.

I'll play devil's advocate for you.

Even though I'm training to become a pilot, my current job has somewhat caused me to to hold pilots in a bit of a low regard. One of the things that pisses us off the most about pilots, is their appearance of being incredibly lazy. I can't tell you how many times we've gone to close the door on the plane, and there will be crew bags just sitting in the jetbridge. No tags for gate check, no nothing. It seems a lot of pilots think it's our job to schlep their bags around, so they just leave them in the gate for us to deal with. So, if you catch a ramper with a chip on his shoulder or one who's just been having a bad day, they may very well just leave them there in the jetbridge. While I've personally never done it, I've seen it done constantly.

Like I said, I personally disagree with the "practice"...I'm just telling you the way it is.

There's no such thing as an empty closet on our 757's. We always fill them with our bags before we put them in any overhead bin.

JetJack74, on this flight the crew did not have any bags or items on the closets.

I know the closets are usually full but on this flight it wasn't.

....that is exactly the way it is. Besides, if you were on a 5500-series 757 (most likely), the closet space is especially limited on those birds.

Sorry to put this so bluntly, but you're not a pilot for Delta! You're a pilot for someone else (maybe) and you don't have a Delta seniority number or employee number.

Secondly, if you had a flight bag, it should have fit under the seat in front of you. I've never known a cabin crew to insist I check my flight bag. There seems to be someplace they can always find to put it.

Finally, if you're a non-rev and not a jumpseater, what difference does it make if you're a pilot, ground crew, flight attendant, mechanic, res agent or anyone else. You comply with the rules and that's the end of it.

To me, this whole thread is full of so many holes it's unbelievable.....

Yes, I am a regional airline pilot.

You sound quite remorseful. It could be worse though, you could be flying for Mesa!  crazy

(And if you flew for Mesa and made some bollocks entry like you just did, you probably would be crying in a corner at the moment.)

Anyway, welcome. The whole "I'm a pilot!" thing doesn't impress anyone here. There's quite a few of us lying around. It may impress some middle school/high schoolers, though. Check your six for Chris Hansen while you're at it.  Wink

Hehe my airline left the entire crews luggage on the ramp at LGW last year!

We flew MAN-LGW where the plane continued to AYT, when it came back the following morning we took it home, we had to put our crew carry-ons in the hold. When we arrived back home I went down to the hold to get everyone's bags and OMG the hold was empty, I went upstairs and told the captain who came down with me and we waited till they opened up the rear hold and our bags weren't in that either, just the passenger ones.

It turns out (after much arguing with the base managment) that the handlers at LGW didn't realise those 10 bags waiting by the aircraft were to be loaded and they left them on the ramp. We were told they would bring them up on the next flight to Manchester, they did just that, they were put on a Jet 2 flight later that day - and called me two days later on my day off to tell me my bag has been at the airport for 3 days and if I'm not there by two it will be destroyed!

I ended up trudging the entire 25 miles to the airport (by public transport) to get my case. The company never gave me another day off or logged it as ground duty despite it was their screw up. In fact the only two redeeming features of the incident was I met a nice hostie on the way home and got chatting and that I've got a story to tell passengers when their bags go missing.

The moral of the story, if you're crew, don't check your bag (unless you are on our 767-300ER's with the seperate crew cargo hold).
