Jones Resigns At Hawaii

Sun Jan 06, 2008 3:21 pm

According to the morning papers it looks like June Jones as resigned as head football coach at the University of Hawaii. Apparently nothing to due with his salary, but frustration with how the athletic department is run, which is not surprising since Arizona State send Herman Frazier packing in 1999 when he was only a asst. AD, and then he had a very short stay at UAB. Jones with his offense did bring a ton of tv money from ESPN into the athletic department, and he did build a strong program despite not having any money to recruit on the mainland. Guess they will promote some assistant and the program will go back to being a run of the mill 4-8 type of team, heck maybe even Michigan will schedule them now.

Definitely look to see him as the coach of SMU, at least if you believe the rumors. Although would he open to offers to return to the NFL sidelines (Although his NFL coaching record is a stellar 22-36)? His stock may have been hurt by the way Hawaii played in the Sugar Bowl. His future may lie in coaching at schools that are a bit under the radar. I don't foresee him ever going to a big name school to coach.

If he took the SMU and was able to turn it around, then he would be truly a miracle worker. At his age, this will probably be his last coaching change.

Neither do I, head coaching in major DI ranks is like being a CEO, get fired at one place, you just end up at another.

Didn't I hear on the Sugar Bowl broadcast a warm fuzzy story about how he promised his quarterback he would always be there for him if the quarterback would commit to Hawaii?

I'd been wanting to revisit this Hawaii subject, we had a thread going where a lot of people continued to proclaim Hawaii the second coming even though they could just barely beat the last place tem in the Pac10. I think we saw how they fared against a good team. They did not deserve to be where they were.

Brennan graduates/graduated this year, so he won't be back next season.

I don't follow football much, but I disagree. Under the rules of the system as it is set up, Hawaii earned their spot. Does the system make sense? Perhaps, perhaps not, but that's the way the system is. Should it be changed? This poll system doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me, as an outsider--when I first heard that Hawaii was, at the time, 11-0 for the season, and the only undefeated team, it made no sense to me that they weren't ranked #1. A playoff system like for NCAA basketball would seem to make more sense.

Sad, really... Frazier should be the one leaving.

Jones is being hosted at a dinner tonight by in Dallas by SMU boosters.
The latest report here in Honolulu quotes people close to the story as saying that they don't think Jones will leave Hawaii after all, and furthermore, the speculation is rampant in Hawaii that this is a ploy to put pressure on the UH athletic department to meet coach Jones demands for improvements to the UH athletic facilities. I sure hope it is a ploy as he has done a tremendous job here at Hawaii, and it would be a devastating loss to our football program if he leaves.
Personally, I would like to see the UH athletic director, Herman Frazier resign, coach Jones and staff get raises, and the Hawaii fans to get off their asses and put their money where their mouths are and help the program financially. We used to have 40,000 season ticket holders and now have only 23,000.
I think we will know for sure what happens with coach Jones tomorrow as SMU is scheduling a press conference and coach Jones is due back in Honolulu tomorrow afternoon. Media reports here say that UH has made a counter offer to make coach Jones the highest paid non BCS conference coach in football, but he has repeatedly said it's not about the money for himself, but it's an issue with facility conditions. We shall see.

Graunke has so much potential next season. He threw the only touchdown pass at the Bowl. Sucks to be him right now.

I might be a season ticket holder next season, since I'm planning to take a sabbatical off. Sun Devil football wasn't as exciting as the Warriors.

Couldn't agree with you more!! When one was an asst AD for a number of years and wasn't interviewed for the top spot when it opened at Arizona State University, that tells you something, which he isn't all that good. (P.S. he is living off his gold medal)

Looks like June is gone.

FIRE HERMAN FRAZIER!!

His misteps are too many to list....but heres a snapshot...

-Took forver to hire a mens basketball coach, lost all recruits as a result
-Didn't complete 2007 Football schedule on time.....result was 2 Div I-AA opponents
-Gave up 1/3 of our Sugar Bowl tickets before trying to sell them
-Didn't have a contract offer ready for Coach Jones until AFTER SMU made a serious offer.....why did it even get to that point!!!!

Under his watch we have lost our Winningest Mens Basketball Coach, our Winningest Women's Basketball Coach and now our Winningest Football Coach....and it looks like they are trying to push out the Women's Volleyball Coach (Women's V-Ball is arguably our most successful sports program overall).

FIRE HIM!!!

Everything that Herman Frazier touches, turns into shit, huh?!

UH assistants Greg McMackin, Dan Morrison and Wes Suan will be joining Jones on the Mustangs staff. What a bummer...

Like I said, I don't follow football so I didn't know the details of how it all worked. Once I found out that the rankings consider not just number of wins and losses but also the respective "difficulty" of the schedule and that Hawaii played a bunch of relatively weak teams, then it made sense.

Gone: Taken from the Honolulu paper this morning; the best part is that if he is fired for cause, the University owes him nothing..

The stunning exit of football coach June Jones was the last straw in the controversial five-year reign of University of Hawai'i Athletic Director Herman Frazier, whose departure will be announced at a news conference today, according to people familiar with the situation.

Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, who is Frazier's immediate supervisor, refused to confirm his firing yesterday, saying only that his status would be discussed today. Frazier was said to have been offered the option of resigning or being fired.

Associate athletic directors Carl Clapp and John McNamara are expected to run the department until a replacement is hired. Clapp is a leading candidate to officially serve as interim director until the replacement is named.

Clapp, 48, came to UH in 2006 from Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga, where he had been athletic director for six years. McNamara, 45, joined UH in 2004 and has most recently worked for the Western Athletic Conference and Conference USA.

Despite a refusal to immediately discuss Frazier's situation, UH President David McClain was candid about his disappointment with the way Jones' UH contract renewal had been handled before Jones decided to leave for Southern Methodist University.

"I also want to apologize to our fans and all of Hawai'i for matters getting to this stage in the first place," McClain said. "Exceptional performance deserves exceptional recognition, and your university was slow to step up. That won't happen again. My focus as your president is to keep the drama on the athletic field and in the stadium, where it belongs, and not at the ticket window, or in contract negotiations."

Frazier was not available for comment.

The inability to lock down Jones, whose five-year contract ends in June, before SMU came calling follows a series of missteps by Frazier.

He received heavy criticism for agreeing to return 4,000 tickets of an initial 17,500 offering from Sugar Bowl organizers, forcing fans to scramble for tickets or be put on a waiting list. UH later asked for more tickets from the Sugar Bowl and, ironically, was left with some unsold.
