BHM 2008 Meet - Interest

Tue Jan 08, 2008 7:00 pm

Who's interested in being temporary hicks in the South, toting guns, shooting steel plates, having some good food and great company? BTW, I am a Full Time Hick/Spic.

The dates are roughly 11 OCT or 19 OCT. The week before is NASCAR's Talladega race, so forget it, no rooms to be had. The dates can be adjusted up or down.

So who's in?

Any ideas?

Two questions:

1) What all from my collection do you guys want me to bring?

2) Who needs a ride?

Is that a trick question?

Can I do the Steel Plates with an MP-5?

Well, you could always get the very difficult MIA - DFW - BHM routing, and have the plane go tech on you at DFW... You never know with airlines.

Only if I get to do it with a Saiga-12.

What about the idea for changing the venue to MIA or someplace? I'm not against the idea of BHM in any way, but I'm open to the idea of different meeting places.

Miamiair and I have discussed this behind the scenes too. Any suggestions? Anybody got a GOOD range and live in a place where there are a few other activities and good places to eat? Unfortunately, the good range here at MAF is not visitor friendly and nightlife in MAF....well....sucks.

I guess we could go to the Commemorative (Confederate) Air Force Museum. Hmmm.... And if we did it one the same weekend as the big AirSho.... Hmmm..... Mexican food, Bar-B-Que....... Hmmm.... Maybe I need to talk to the range directors.

Edit: I should also mention that we came to the conclusion absent a better suggestion that BHM isn't too bad.

The range I have access to is in BFE. It is very, very very spartan in ammenities: it has a port-o-john and several canvas covers for shade. We organize shoots out there all the time and bring in everything we need for the day; from BBQ, to coolers, chairs and tents. And we can use tannerite.

It is roughly 15 miles south of my home, and I live well to the SW of Miami (near KTMB). There are numerous watering holes in the vicinity as well as good restauruants, but we would not be near any of the hot spots that first time MIA visitors would want to see, such as SoBe.

If the consensus is you guys want to do it down here, that is fine by me and I'd be happy to set it up. But, the BHM FOP range is several orders of magnitude nicer than the place down here, and I don't mind doing it up there again. If we do it at BHM I am seriously considering driving up there as I can bring more toys.

I doubt that the FOP range will allow tannerite, but we can ask. I have three cases (Can we set it off in a 5 gal pail???)

That was about seven pounds of tannerite...

And you can't see much of it in the video, but that is the range I am talking about.

I like the BHM set up. The only thing I would change, not to knock Ted's hospitality, would be to have breakfast at a restaurant.

I'd keep V-J's and the Thai place as tradition.

I have a separate question for our more educated gun experts here. I was talking with a friend from ATL yesterday and he was telling me about a pistol his father owns that he can't find any information on. It's a WAC (Women's Army Corps) issued 22 auto that looks like a scaled down 1911. His father says that it was developed as an alternative to the .45 so they'd have something that the average woman could handle (yes I know women who do fine with a .45 but don't shoot the messenger). Anybody know anything about this?

Wow, you sure stumped me on that one! I have not heard about that pistol although as you probably know there are .22LR conversions for the standard 1911 pistol. Have you ever seen the pistol in question and do you for sure know if it has a smaller frame? The reason I ask is I am thinking maybe the WAC was just using a standard 1911 with a .22 conversion.

Absent any other info you might find on teh interwebs, I'd make a call directly to Colt if I were him. Colt is usually one of the most helpful firearms manufactuers in getting information on their older products.

Well you will be for sure. I'm on the "I don't know yet" list. That depends on what happens in May. If I get a call (I go to a private religious college and upon graduating I may or may not get a call to somewhere, meaning that a school "calls" me to teach there, basically it's getting a job handed to me right out of college), I'll be teaching somewhere and may not get a chance to get that time off. If I do not receive a call, then I'll be there (because there'd be no way I'd get a teaching job for next year if I have to apply for the jobs). I should be able to get a for sure answer by the end of May.  Smile

Bum Fuck Egypt (BFE)

Actually it is about three miles due south of Homestead General Airport X51.

Google Earth:
25 28' 14.50" N 80 33' 39.27W

I live 1 mile east of TMB. TMB to X51 is 13 miles. All the touristy places are 21 miles NE of me.

There are plenty of things to do in this neck of the woods and good food, but some first timers down here might want to do the tourist thing. I'll go with flow.

Florida has very good reciprocity with many other states, but not having reciprocity for concealed carry wouldn't be a show-stopper anyway. It just means you can't carry concealed in that particular state. As far as the legality of just the meet part of it we could have it in any of the 50 states.

http://www.usconcealedcarry.com/public/363.cfm

Granted, some are more gun-friendly than others. For instance, if the Texas Department of Public Safety pulls me over on my way to the range in West Texas with 30 guns and 5,000 rounds of ammo in my car the trooper might raise an eyebrow or check the serial number on some of them to make sure they're not stolen but then I'd be on my way. If that happened in Illinois, they'd call out a tac squad and I'd likely be arrested for aggravated lawfulness.

Quoting N1120A (Reply 27):

Is it dependent upon whether Florida recognizes your Concealed Handgun License? Tell me what state you're licensed in and I'll check to see if you have reciprocity with FL.

I'd vote IND - but I'm a novice compared to all of you, and I'm not sure what all would be available this way. But it is a gun-friendly state and plenty central to most anyone.

Quoting Queso (Reply 8):
Anybody got a GOOD range and live in a place where there are a few other activities and good places to eat?

I'll have to check on the ranges, but IND has the rest you described - and only 4 hrs from ORD, 2 from CVG and maybe 5 from DTW if you're that desperate.

That's enough! And your job (career) of course is most important so don't take what I'm saying too seriously.

I know.  Smile It's just all circumstantial right now. I'll let everyone know when I find out what's in store for my future school year.  Smile

LogansGirl and I are maybes for this. Either we'll have relocated to BHM by then, in which case either October weekend should be fine, or we'll be travelling between her contracts. In that case, as it tentatively looks right now, we wouldn't be free until one of the first several weekends in November.

If a Miami meet is of interest, why not keep BHM and do MIA staggered several months apart?

Quoting Miamiair (Reply 17):
I'd keep V-J's and the Thai place as tradition.

We ate at Surin West two weeks ago, and the food was as good as ever. V-J's was marginal, but hell, it's tradition; and more or less conveniently located.

Going to bring your own gun? If you're going to live in 'Bama you'll need to get a gun so you'll fit in!  Wink

Hello Everyone!

Quoting DL021 (Reply 6):
What about the idea for changing the venue to MIA or someplace? I'm not against the idea of BHM in any way, but I'm open to the idea of different meeting places.

I love the range in BHM, and outdoor ranges are the best place to shoot, even on bad weather days. However, I also think that we should put a serious effort into finding a different location. I have seen the range that Miamiair mentioned, and while it is nothing compared to the FOP range, Miami as a destination is much better than Birmingham. I seem to remember that the primary reason for choosing BHM 2 years ago was so that Pep, who was already planing to be in BHM to visit family, could combine the two trips.

I will be in Dallas this week, I'll make an effort to scout around there. Maybe MDorBust can point me in the right direction.

You know you can count me in, afterall I bid my work schedule last year to accomdate that trip.
