Memory Stick Not Recognized On Vista.

Thu Jan 10, 2008 6:25 pm

I recently bought a new PC which has Vista home premium.

I put it in my memory stick and I foolishly pulled it out while installing itself. Now everytime I put the same memory stick back in. It displays the error "USB Device not recognized"

What could be the problem?

Thanks for the help guysss!

Regards!

EDIT: Its a Kingston 1gb DataTreveler memory stick.

You probably pulled it out while something was being written to it. Put it in another machine and format it. Or, the reader doesn't work with that particular card.

Hey Go3Team,

Thanks for the response. I wasn't writing anything to the device at the time. It was the first time I had inserted the memory stick into this particular machine. As for the reader issue, I have tried the device in various other ports but to no avail.

Regards!

I have a few Sandisk SD cards that work great on this laptop, but my older laptop, and image tank refuse to identify a card even being there.

Check if the Memory stick works on another Computer. If it does not.Could be a problem with the Device.
If it does.Try restoring Vista to an earlier date.

Vista is probably sulking since it was so eagerly working on that nice popup telling you that it actually recognized some new hardware and you just had to cruelly yank the stick out right then and there... wouldn't you be disappointed as well...?  mischievous

Trying another computer and possibly reformatting sounds like a plan, though.  Smile

Like others have said, try putting the memory stick into a different computer. You likely pulled it out at the worst time possible, when it was pairing itself with your computer. By the way, why would you do that?  Wink

put it in, go to Start - right click on computer, click manage. Double click on storage, then disk management. Does it show up in there? Also, go to device manager, on the left pane. Is there any "unrecognized devices" or does it show up under "disk drives"?

Thanks for the help guys!

The memory stick is now fixed thanks to a friend of mine who helped me after school with it.

I have a couple of problems with Vista (like it freezes on start up) its good to get one out of the way.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

There I was thinking Vista was a mature and better version of XP!

Regards guys!

Better and Microschrott don't usually go together. Personally I would never touch a new MS operating system until SP1.

The other thing you could have done was to go into the device manager, look for a broken USB device (usually with a yellow exclamation mark next to it) and deinstall then reinsert.

Or buy a Mac
