The Australian Open 2008 Thread

Sat Jan 19, 2008 5:41 pm

Normally I wouldn't start tennis threads, but I'm watching the Hewitt/Baghdatis match (just ended - Hewitt won), and what a match it was.

Baghdatis was down and out in the 4th set, but stuck in it, got it to a tiebreak, won it, fought Hewitt bitterly through several match points, but finally succumbed after 4 hours and 45 minutes of play.

Even if you're a casual tennis fan, it's hard to get much better than that.

Quoting Mir (Thread starter):
but finally succumbed after 4 hours and 45 minutes of play.

Not only that....but it was on TV live. Which means the match ended just past 4:30 AM in Melbourne.

Baghdatis had a smile on his face up to the very end, which was nice to see. He had tears in his eyes as he walked off the court.

Currently watching some of a replay of the Federer-Tipsarevic match.

Did anyone watch the match last night between Federer and Tipsarevic? Awesome match, I think the 49th ranked Serb did an excellent job. 6-7 7-6 5-7 6-1 10-8 Federer had something 42 aces.

I was hoping that this would be a double triumph for both Serbian players in the finals (Ivanovic in the Ladies final and Djokovic in the Men's final) and was a bit disappointed when Sharapova won. But at least Djokovic won the Men's final, though still, credit to the challenger who came out of nowhere to knock out loads of favourites on the way to the final.
