Will Tony Dungy Retire?

Sun Jan 20, 2008 4:36 am

Tony Dungy has told the Colts organization he would inform them of his decision by Monday 21 January.

I bring this to the board because he seems to be a coach that EVERYONE likes and respects...real man of integrity and faith.

I would love to have him back for next season, especially to open up the new stadium, but something tells me he's done with football (for now) and Jim Caldwell will be announced as the new Colts head coach.

The floor is open...

I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled a Bill Cowher for a few years.

Very true. It'll be a real shame if the Colts lose him.
It may be too early to drink scotch... But it is NEVER too early to think about it...

I could forsee this...in fact, returning to the Colts front-office in a few years wouldn't be a shocker. The door will always be open for Dungy!

The pressure on a NFL head coach today is tremendous, I just look at my friend on the NFL Network and see how much he aged after coaching the 49ers and Lions, but I have no idea if Tony Dungy will retire or not, but what more can he accomplish? Joe Gibbs wife didn't want him to return to coaching because if he wasn't has successful has he was before his reputation would suffer ditto with George Siefert. Only Dungy knows when its time to get on his horse and ride off into the sunset and smell the roses..

I like Dungy, and I'm glad he's taking the time to really think it over, and not just base his decision in the emotion of the moment. Bill Walsh said that he wished he had given it some time after winning Super Bowl XXIII, and within a few weeks of retiring, realized he had made a mistake, but by then it was too late. He wasn't going to come back and coach any team except San Francisco, so going to another team was out of the question.
