Quoting Nosedive,Off Season Thread 3:

Well, Honda had a brilliant 2004 season, with JB nabbing 10 podiums.

That was then. Last season they were absolutely poor and any progress that Honda and Button could've made after winning the 2006 Hungarian GP looks as though it's gone to waste. Having said that they need to get something this season, especially if Button is to retain any credibility (from me at least).

B747forever - do you just restart these threads to boost your count? Come on the only one was only a few over 210 right? now with barely any images atall - on a mid range broadband connection that was loading in mere seconds - hardly time to restart it...

Yah Im not sure what Button is doing - although after his first win with Honda you can hardly blame him for staying right? In my opinion if he does crap this year, He will quit Honda and move to another team but IMO he has thrown away any chance for a world championship to the "big 4" (Kimi, Alonso, Hamilton Massa) and I think hes doomed to become another Coulthard..

Just my opinion..

Possibly but Im not sure hes got the technical knowledge to be any use to the higher teams e.g. Ferrari, Mclaren, BMW etc, so he might end up at somewhere like super aguri or the mid/bottom of the pack; you are probably right though, I doubt he would get a race seat with a decent team again although maybe a few offerings with lower teams but would he take them?

Whether he takes them or not will probably depend on how much money is being offered!!! (Unless of course Honda sack him first and wants to remain in the sport). That proves my point on how he's basically 'thrown away his career', he could've got something at Williams and maybe a break into the 'Big Four'.

I accept that he probably saw potential at the time of his decision within Honda, but to me it's short-sightedness and last season proves that. I wish him the best of luck (Britain needs several competitive drivers in at the same time, not one every 5 years or so) but time is not on his side.

I'm in the "the worst thing to happen to JB was LouHam" crowd. His 2004 season was brilliant, and it came after a rather "decent" 2003 stint with BAR Honda, which had JB telling JV where to shove it. As for JB's future, well I didn't really see SeaBass getting a shot at F1, so I don't want to comment on JB. Also, has Honda even started testing the new car this yr?

Some new cars on track today: Williams FW30, Renault R28

I saw Mr. Button on the TV show "Top Gear," shown here in the USA on BBC America. He came on and answered questions from Jeremy, and then did a lap in the older "reasonably-priced car.'' He was slower than that fat old fart Nigel Mansell! The show must have been taped before JB's win at Hungary in 2006.

In any event, he seems like a nice bloke, and I wish him well.

Whatever they deside to do, it can't get worse though.

On the other hand, I am very interested to see what Mr. Brawn have been able to do so far for the team. I for one thinks that he is the right person to make this team competitive.

I'm starting to believe the same thing. It seems that Brawn should be able to help turn the team around, especially because Button was quoted as saying that last years Honda was horrible because of Aero problems.

Anyway I hope that their livery is better this year because last years was crap. Although I think they already have confirmed that they will be introducing Version 2 of their earth livery for this season.

I am actually Hoping that Williams comes out with a really cool Livery for their 30th anniversary....Their new car looks pretty good too.

For those of you who haven't seen it, check out the R28. Note the new nose, and its interesting aero design.

Why not? The track will be heavily flood lit so that everyone can see properly including the drivers - you dont actually think it will be very dark do you?

Seems alot of teams are using the "bridged" nose now - Anyone know the aerodynamical advantages?

My understanding from a special on F1 cars on TV last year, the wing on the very bottom underneath the normal wing, it stalls the nose at high speed by disrupting the airflow creating less drag.. so whats the benefit of the top one? more downforce or to stall more of the aero?

It won't be that different from watching other night sports... fussball, rallying, ski jumping (thought I'd throw that in) etc...

Didn't the company who are doing the lighting in Singapore say they are only lighting one side of the circuit, and that because of the height/size of an F1 car they expect shadows to be minimal. I don't think it will be too bad.

Quoting B747forever (Reply 19):

As a European you shouldn't be whinging... Would you rather get up in the middle of the night? Night races are probably going to become more common in the next few years, now the technology allows for them to be possible, the European TV audiences will dictate them, especially when they can run with fag logos on the car over there.

Quoting Jamesbuk (Reply 21):

I am no aero expert, but I assume they are more for channeling airflow over the wing in the desired way. There may be some extra downforce gained, but I assume they are more of an airflow director.

And as I've said before, they're only to adapt the scheduling of races in Asia to Central European Time. FIA (namely Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone) don't have the slightest bit of interest of using these night races to make F1 more interesting, otherwise we'd have F1 night races in e.g. Indianapolis or Hockenheim.

if Ten didn't let Big Boof-head and Australian I-Have-No-Talent run over then the usual 10:30 start time might be achievable. Even when they schedule 11:30 it still some how manages to blow out to mid night cause they don't find a way to shorten the program in between. Three ways to fix this. Give the rights to Foxtel to show it live with a delayed broadcast on 10, or, digital multi channeling with F1 being shown live on the second channel, or lastly, don't let the reality crap run over time. Only the last one is feasible since media laws pretty much prohibit the other two.

Not before time and to be applauded but this part of their new system...

And in a bid to ensure total impartiality of decisions, the appointed FIA stewards at each race will be chosen from nationalities that are totally neutral - so they are not the same as any of F1's competitors.

On the surface this seems like a good idea but is there a sufficiently qualified pool of stewards available from places with no vested interest?

I really hope that Honda learns from its livery mistakes (aswell as mechanical  Wink ) from last year.. it was god damned awful.

Well whatever happens, decisions like this will always be bias, I cant possibly think of anyway these decisions wont be bias.

Well, if night races boost TV ratings in Asia as well, expect to see night races in Europe, IMO.

Doubtful. Bernie and Max are too focused on "pleasing" the Central European market at the expense of others. IMO waking up early in the morning to watch F1 races overseas has its appeals to it. Yes, it's a pain for many and even for me, but many times it's definitely worth the effort.

It's still much better than that horrible green.  Wink

Ok, I'm not making my point clear. let me use an example: Asian viewers love the night race and viewership is up like 20%. Bernie and Max think, "Hmmmm...maybe the Europeans will tune into a EUROPEAN night race." Hockenheim becomes a night race, with the expectation that EUROPEAN viewership will also be up by a similar percent. Of course, the example above has not happened, but there is some date to support this from NASCAR.

Quote:
Which leads us directly into the second reason -- network pressure. When football is removed from the equation, Saturday night ratings are most often higher than Sunday afternoon ratings. People are at home at night, not out running errands.

And while NASCAR's Sunday ratings are currently astronomical -- Darlington was up 22% from last year, with a 4.9 overnight rating on TNT -- they've yet to take on the NFL head-to-head. That test comes this weekend in New Hampshire. There will be no 4.9 this weekend.

Quote:
TNT continued its strong ratings surge both in Winston Cup and Busch Series racing this weekend in Richmond, Virginia. Saturday night's Chevrolet Monte Carlo 400 with The Looney Tunes registered a 4.2 national cable rating for TNT, up 20% from a 3.5 in 2001. Friday night's Funai 250, also from Richmond, scored a 2.2 rating, up a whooping 47% from a year ago when the Richmond Busch race earned a 1.5 national cable rating. The Richmond race concludes a streak of four straight Winston Cup races on TNT, all substantially up from the previous year. During that period TNT averaged a 4.8 national cable rating, up 17% from a 4.1 during the same four races in 2001. For the year, through six Winston Cup races, TNT is up 9%. to a 4.8, compared to a 4.4 in 2001. The Busch Series also continues to show terrific growth. Year to date, the Busch Series is averaging a 1.6 national cable rating on TNT, up 14% from a 1.4 in 2001 for six like races. TNT also telecast the lead-in Busch Series race for the Daytona 500 in February, earning a 2.7 rating. The same race aired on Fox in 2001, garnering a 3.2.(Turner PR)(9-10-2002)

Quote:
TNT followed up last week's all-time network high 5.3 (4,497,000) national cable rating for NASCAR's Pepsi 400 Winston Cup race in Brooklyn, MI with a 4.8 rating in primetime for Saturday night's Sharpie 500 in Bristol, TN. The 4.8 (4,137,000) represents a 17% increase over last year's rating (4.1), and is the highest rated night race in Bristol Motor Speedway history.

Source for last 2 quotes
Now, the Nat'l Football League (NFL) doesn't exist in Europe, but I think my point still remains; there are less TV distractions with night races, which may translate into a ratings boost. Also note Bristol, a track that has had night races for some years. Granted because Bristol has had so many night races, it is difficult to do a 1-1 comparison with other Bristol races (though Bristol does have a 2nd day race during the season, IIRC. The dates of the day and night race are pretty set in stone, and the day race may have other factors), but the fact Bristol consistently has night races, as do other tracks, proves that night racing does do well with viewers.

So when it comes to F1, if the Asian night races do well with Asians, expect the same logic to be applied to European races and Europeans.

My thoughts on the subject were from a different direction.
I was thinking about the possibility that Asian audiences would grow to the size where there was a demand from them to watch the Euro races at a reasonable time, forcing the Euro races into the night. Not about providing a better show for the Europeans.
There is evidence that the support base (the dollars) is moving East and that may drive this scenario.

Cheers

It may be unpalatable for the Euro centric mind but as I said earlier, the support base for F1 is moving East.
It won't be next year or the year after that decisions are made based on what the Asian market ($$ not spectators)wants but it is a brave person who declares it won't happen.

The move started when Europe toughened up,and rightly so, on the tobacco funding. The F1 world with few exceptions lacked the moral fibre to acknowledge that was the right thing to do and started to move towards markets that still allowed it.

But most developed nations forbid tobacco advertising. If bernie really wants to keep the tobacco companies in F1 the entire championship will be run in third world central African countries.

Didn't the company who are doing the lighting in Singapore say they are only lighting one side of the circuit, and that because of the height/size of an F1 car they expect shadows to be minimal. I don't think it will be too bad.

I think they also said that It is only lit on one side so that If the Drivers spin out, they wouldn't get disoriented ( Smart Idea Me thinks)....

I'm also surprised you have school on a sunday....Even if its just homework, please think about your Logic.

If the Race in Asia was in the afternoon, then you'd Get to see the race at like 6 am...on a Sunday morning, which is Fine (especially if you are a hardcore fan...) and you'd have most of Sunday to work on your homework. However with a night race, the timing will be something you're more accostume to.

Here, we see most of the races at 8am or even earlier...So we're pretty used to it...Having a Night Race in Malaysia is like having a Day Race in Europe....Same for you all I guess.

I did read somewhere that they're still going for a Version 2 of the Honda Earth Livery...I hope this time it looks better though. I wonder if they caught on that pretty much all of Honda's Earth thinks this Livery is not asthetically pleasing.
