Help! IMac AirPort Problem.

Fri Jan 25, 2008 9:41 am

I need a Mac expert...

I finally saved enough money to buy myself a nice iMac today BUT I'm already having problem with AirPort  cry  . I can get online with my MacBook (OS X 10.5.1) fine but the iMac (OS X 10.5) keeps giving me error messages like "AirPort does not have an IP address", "AirPort self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to internet" and other things along the line. Sometimes I would have full signal but can't connect to internet and sometimes it just doesn't properly detect the wireless network at all. I have my MacBook sitting on the same desk with the iMac so I'm pretty sure it's the iMac's problem not the wireless router's (nor the cable modem) problem.

I tried to "reformat" the iMac with the disks they provided in the box but the same things keep happening. So currently I am running the Leopard disk I bought for upgrading my MacBook. I figure since my MacBook is connected to the internet without a problem, I hope installing using this disk will solve my problem. But just in case, I need some suggestions/comments/thoughts on how to fix this problem.  Sad

P.S. Klaus! Where are you?? Big grin

Peace;

Even if you did not take the Apple Care Protection Plan you should have 90 Days FREE-OF-CHARGE Technical Support, give them a call...they should be able to help you

Is the leopard disc a generic disk (boxed) or is it one with MacBook written on it?

If so, the firmware may be different.

Try connecting via ethernet and run software update, I have heard that some have had problems before getting 10.5.1

Thanks

According to some "Mac-Sites" 10.5.2 is on its way which should fix even more bugs when it comes to AirPort, but as I said before I do not want to jump into conclusions what could be the problem - so the best solution would be to call the Tech-Support. If the iMAC itself is the problem they should exchange it within a few days - no big Deal.

I would indeed call Apple's support first. They should be able to walk you through the network setup.

Just one thing: A missing IP address could be related to System Preferences -> Network -> Airport -> Configure: not being set to Using DHCP but to Manually. In that case you'd need to enter a proper IP address yourself.

Your internet router most probably provides automatic DHCP address setup services, so it should probably be set to Using DHCP.

Replicating the setting from your MacBook would probably be a good idea, including those under Advanced....

If your MacBook should use manual IP address setup, choose a different number for the last of the four numbers.

Kind of, but with internet setup we usually decline support and refer to the ISP as we are not provided each ISP's setups. Without AppleCare that call will still be free though; for 90 days.

Agreed.

you are welcome . If you did not take APP now you still have almost a year to decide, but after the 90 days are over every call will cost you a bunch of money (in Europe EUR 47 per call/case, if the problem is Apple's fault you will get refunded afterwards), so think about it...

Yeah .. with these Apple threads I rarely read, as they are usually filled with nonsensical replies. I just skip and write the facts. An exception, it seems, here!

Seems that I was right again in the other Mac Thread "MacMini against PC", where Klaus was "attacked" because of his Apple knowledge

Quoting Fiatstilojtd (Reply 24):
Yeah sure ...comments like that keep me away from answering questions regarding Apple most of the time, and I think the same is also valid for swiftski.
