This be my poison of choice. Poison it is indeed.
Caffeine, taurine, alcohol, sugar. A party drink and a half!
A generally bad idea!

I actively choose Coca-Cola over booze in many situations. Especially if they've got it in bottles. If there's Coke sealed in a glass bottle, count me in.

Four Peaks 8th Street Ale currently.

Then switching to the last 2 Hefewiezens I have left. Later on in the evening I plan on enjoying a Grey Goose and Mexican coke.

Shot and a beer. Beer and a shot. Shot and a beer........  duck

It really depends on my mood. Beer is definitely the usual choice (And the type of beer depends on my mood, so I usually have a few choices in the fridge), but scotch and vodka are among my favorites as well. Occasionally, I'll get a bottle of wine or get a bottle of sake. In the last several months, I've also developed a taste for gin.

Their version is brewed under license up there by a Canadian brewer. It tastes different (IMO, worse) than our domestic version. Besides, I bet I could take Budweiser (or many other domestic brews), put it in a fancy green bottle that says "imported" on the label and half the A.net beer snobs would think it's tasty.

If you truly enjoy drinking beer you'll reach for different flavors depending on your mood and budget at the moment.

Depending on mood/location...

Aperitif: Martini Bianco on a couple of ice cubes, with a slice of lemon.

Informal dining: Pomegranate or standard margarita (Padron tequila, no salt, on ice but not too much)

Evening cocktail: Cosmopolitan

Poolside: Pina Colada

Barbecue: Remy Martin cognac and orange juice (blasphemous but good !)

Any testosterone-laden environment where frou-frou drinks are socially frowned upon: Southern comfort on the rocks.

Nightcap: Baileys, one cube of ice or a small glass of my uncle's home-made sloe gin (kills all known germs dead).

If it's VERY hot and I'm VERY thirsty, Dos Equis or Sol beer with a slice of lime, but only if it's very cold.

As far as beer goes.. I can drink it but I am not a big fan.

My worst ever beer memory is from a few weeks ago. During drunken movie monday with some co-workers we began running low on beer. We had a sober guy coming with food, so we sent him to get beer too.. Some drunken genius (might have been me) suggested the heineken mini keg. That shit was skunktacular and that keg would not die. In fact we had to suffer through it the next week.. where it was even worse than we remembered it.

As some of you may know I am in Texas.. Which is kind of like Elba for anyone with taste. Anyway, there are two big beers here. Lone Star, which makes keystone look like quality.. And Shiner- which gives me the wicked shits.

However, if someplace draws it correctly, I will take a Guinness. The shit in the can is even halfway decent for home use.

Liquor.. The guys from work are big on either Jack Daniels and coke or Makers Mark and coke. I am partial to the Makers Mark. It's trouble though when we ditch the coke and switch to shots.. That means nobody is going home until the next day.

My Margaritas have become famous. They involve Grand Marnier so what is there not to love?

Decent vodka is also popular.. Goose or Stoli are my favorites.. However, Skyy Vanilla is good, and goes great with coke.

That's a good rule of thumb, but it's very difficult to apply in France - even quite good wines can be under EUR5.00 a bottle (only the superior wines are over 10, if it's red. I know some good types that I like such as Chablis or Pouilly Fume for white, and Cotes du Rhone for red, but I have no idea which are the good labels amongst them, so it generally comes down to price in the end (and how pretty the label is  Smile )

Cotes du Rhone

I first tried one of these a few weeks ago. I was pretty impressed and promptly killed probably 4 bottles of the stuff in the week that followed. However, that was in Ohio.. I am having a hell of a time locating any in my regular wine hunting spots.

I can picture the label but I have no idea what was on it.. It was in French and I have a hard enough time memorizing in English. also, I had a pretty decent Cabernet Sauvignon in first class on American on my way back here.. It had a small black label but my memory was shot to hell after 3 glasses of that at altitude.

If any of the wine snobs here ever get to Dayton, Ohio (I have no idea why they would go) there is a pretty awesome wine gallery downtown.. great food, amazing selection of wine.. and its run by people who know their wine. And they will sell you anything you want by the bottle to take home.

I'd imagine that the Cotes du Rhone that gets exported is probably the top end stuff, so I'm not surprised you enjoyed it.

I had an excellent Cabernet the other day (not that I'm an expert, but I really liked it) - I was in TLV, and the wine was Israeli (well technically, at least - it's from the Golan Heights, but let's not go there !) - very smooth and tasty. I think it was one of their better Cabernet's (I was with a fundi and he chose it, even specified the year he wanted (not the one on the list) - it was good. That one had a black label too.
