Saturdays Stupid Thread What Mayo Do You Use

Sat Jan 26, 2008 9:19 pm

This my idea of a stupid thread as I people do not like mayo or they do. What type of mayo do you use on your foods? For me it is Miracle whip. I love that stuff.

That jar is off. The Best Before date is June 2003. I'd throw it in the Trash if I were you

Hellmann's Mayo for me I suppose, if at all. I'm not a huge fan, but that's what in my fridge.

America's favorite. Hellmann's real. Nothing beats the taste. Glob it on roast beef and american sandwich. Yummy!

Miracle Whip is not mayo, it's salad dressing. But that's OK, BigMac's have Thousand Island dressing on them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayonnaise

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

I make my own. Takes about 10 min, but of course only last 5 days at most.

Miracle Whip is NOT mayo. It's really a chemistry project!

Hunter

1/2 cup light olive oil
1/2 cup corn or peanut oil
3 egg yolks, at room temp
1 Tsp dijon Mustard
1 Tbs Lemon Juice
Pinch of salt
Pinch of White Pepper
1 Tbs Whte wine vinegar
1 Tbs Boiling water

1. Mix together the oils in a glass measuring cup with a spout, set aside
2. In a medium bowl whisk the egg yolks until light and thick. Whisk in the mustard, lemon juice, salt and pepper and continue beating steadily until the misture is smooth and thick.
3. Gradually add just a few drops of the oil, whisking until the oil is incorporated. Do not add too much oil in the beginning, or the mixture willnot emulsufy. Once the mayonnaise begins to thicken, add the rest of the oil in a slow steady stream, whisking continually.
4. Whisk in the vinegar and the boiling water. Taste the mayonanaise and adjust the seasonings. Cover and refrigerate, for up to 5 days.

As others have said, that's not mayonaise.

As for me, I don't care what brand (except that cheap brand sold in Costa Rican Walmarts, aka Hypermas and Masxmenos), it simply has to have a small hint of lemon in it (and maybe some garlic), and it's perfect.

Thank god Walmart is leaving Germany. They miserably failed because of several issues related to location of the sole Walmart I know of (it's about 3 km or so east of Hamburg), plus management problems. I was never really happy when Walmart came to Germany, and I'm not that pleased about Walmart in Costa Rica, but that's business.
