Internet Connection Speed?.

Sun Jan 27, 2008 6:47 pm

Last Saturday, a series of power cuts took out my internet and wi-fi connection.

I spent 2 days trying to get it fixed, which it now is however my broadband is now really really slow - more like the old dial up days !!.

When I log in via AOL, it normally chucks me off after 10 minutes or so as well, and AOL then shuts itself down and takes whatever you were doing with it. At the moment I am now using Internet Explorer, as at least I keep the page on the screen for the few seconds whilst the net re-connects itself.

I also cannot get my laptop to log onto the wi-fi connection via my netgear router either. I get a little yellow and black triangle on the internet connections page saying limited conenction or something like that !!.

Any ideas what could be causing it, and how can I check out my internet conenction speed ?.

Cheers.

This one seems to be quite popular.

As for the general problem, possibly ring your ISP and ask if anyone in your area has had similar problems since the power cuts and/or how to remedy it! I had a similar problem with my Netgear router and they just sent me a new one.

what reconnects - the wireless internet connection? if so It sounds like your router is screwed.

As for phoning your ISP - I would advise against that, AOL will charge you about 50p a minute and keep you on hold for ages. Try raising a query via their online system if you can. If not, phone BT and ask if there are problems with your local exchange (but if they offer to send out an engineer DONT as it will cost you £50 if the fault is not with BT)

I think it's weird that one server would let me have incredible download speeds, but another would give me great upload speeds. So odd.

The wi-fi isn't working at the mo as it won't let the laptop access the network for some reason. I've typed in the correct passkey thingy, but still won't have it. It's the general main internet connection that keeps dropping out.

I had to speak to them last Sunday and Monday for around 30 mins each time, but now their max call cost is 7.51p/min so not too bad anymore !!.

I got this result off the London server :-

Then this from the Maidenhead server :-

I thought the first one seemed a bit on the high side, so ran it again and got this :-

Guess I'll have to call them up again tomorrow.

There's your problem. Dump AOL and get some other ISP. But stay away from O2 as well. I'm hearing, at least in Germany, that they're the least customer friendly (a customer had to wait months until they activate his broadband and when he decided to quit, O2 still caused him trouble).

^^I can live with that for the moment. Better broadband isn't available in Costa Rica anyway unless you pay a fortune for it.

They've just launched broadband here in the UK too, and as far as I am aware, there are similar issues here too. I also know one a.netter who's on Orange broadband and she too has had issues. Best stay away from the mobile providers methinks.

I've got a 1MB connection with BT at home which is awful. Luckily at work I have a great connection to abuse use.

Our speeds are piss poor here, paying for 8mb BT and getting no more than 4000kbs.

They should at least admit to what you CAN get.

Always reliable mind.

They do. They say 'up to' 8mb. Cheeky sods. We get 4mb here as well and to be honest I can't fault BT now that it's up and working. When it falls over however, good luck.  grumpy

all will be changing soon - ofcom are investigating the issue and are expected to demand ISPs quote an average speed instead.

Who would you recommend I switch to instead of AOL ?.

I had thought about renewing with AOL to get the free laptop, and when I compared prices online they are also the cheapest too.

You decided what a/c you actually saw at LHR yet as you didn't reply to your thread in civ-av  Wink

Just been re-doing mine via Maidenhead, and got this :-

This is about the average I've been getting while I've been trying it.

Without sounding a bit thick, what do those numbers actually mesn, and why such a difference between up load and down load ?.
