How Much Snow?

Fri Feb 01, 2008 12:00 am

How much snow has your city or town got this winter so far? Here on Long Island (NY) there hasn't been a winter, so far we got less than 3 inches of snow. And it hasn't really been that cold either. We only had 2 cold snaps where the temperature has only been in the teens and twenties. And the only lasted for 2 or 3 days at most.

So how has the winter been in your city or town so far?

For the NY area...not much. I am very dissapointed because we were seeing snow in mid December which I thought would give way to January but it seems to be extremely cold when it is sunny and warmer when precipiation comes.

About an inch. We had a light dusting about two weeks ago, then go an inch three days later (Some areas in Metro Atlanta got around 2"). That snow pretty much melted after the snow stopped, as the ground was still a bit warm.

Off hand I don't know exactly how much snow we have received so far this winter. We have only had a couple snow falls that left anything.....but we are apparently going to get a huge storm tonight and into tomorrow.

Bring it on..........I love the snow!!!

Calgary didn't see much snow this winter until about 5-6 days ago when it just started blizzarding.

In total, probably about 50cm or so from our first snowfall in late November to now.

Cheers,

Phyllis, that looks really nice. Which reaffirms my belief that snow is great to look at and play in for a few days. But royally sucks if you have to live in it day to day. I am soooo glad to no longer be living in a part of the country where snow is measured by the food.

And to answer the OPs question. 3" about 2 weeks ago. With a few dustings to 1" before that.

Wow! Those pics are quite breathtaking!!

As for me down in Lancaster, we don't have that much snow. I would guess maybe around 10 inches at best, but that might be stretching it. The heaviest snow we received all season was a 1-3 inch snowfall...

None here yet for 2008 in Birmingham, UK, but I think we have a lot on the way. I spoke to family on the phone in mid Wales - about 100 miles west of here, and they had a good few inches with more coming tomorrow and Saturday. Bad news really, as they have to get out of mid Wales on Saturday and pick me up to go to a wedding, which won't happen if the roads are closed.

At sea level where I live -- about 20 cm on the ground right now.

Behind my house and up at the 4000 ft. top of Mt. Seymour (a 15 minute drive) -- about 500 cm and counting.

Oops -- should have checked first. Mt. Seymour has 669 cm. (22 ft.), more forecast for weekend.

The weather forecasters predicted that we wouldn't get very much snow this year, if any. But it's snowed at least 1-2 times a week since November. It did get a bit warm for a few days, so some of it melted, but it got replaced by some new snow and with the bit of a cold snap over the last couple of weeks, it's been staying.

It hasn't really been that cold this year though, just an odd cold snap going down to about -20 here and there, but the temperature is usually around the freezing level, or just below.

It has been one of the snowiest winters in memory here in Vancouver. So far at Cypress Mountain (the site for the freestyle ski-jumping and snowboard competitions for the winter olympics in 2010) has received over 600 centimetres (6 metres) of snow this year. Whistler has had 686 cm or 270". At least it hasn't been too cold- Minus 3 or 4c (28F or so) and even then for only short periods of time. Just to the east of us things have been quite different:Arctic outflow winds pushing the windchill down to minus 20c.

Here in Ottawa we've had a little more than 200 cm (80") of snow to date (with another 20-30 cm/8-12") expected today and tonight).

Most of that, though, fell between late-November and Christmas. Since then, we've had maybe in the region of 15-20 cm (6-8"). It'll be nice to have a little fresh snow, especially since we had freezing rain the other night and the snow on the ground now has a shiny, crusty layer of ice on it.

Until last week we didn't rally have winter. Until January it wasn't even cold.
This week everything changed.
For the first time in 7 years the Negev desert (in southern Israel) was white with few cm of snow. Of course with this kind of weather there was snow on all mountains in central (about 20 cm in Jerusalem) and northern Israel.

Last week the top of the Hermon mountain in northern Israel was "naked", today there are about 2 meters of snow and tomorrow the ski season will finally start.

Yes. That typically happens up north. Phoenix is in a valley and the farther north you go, the higher the altitude. Carefree would probably be considered the farthest north phoenix and they have had snow fall and stay for almost a whole day. When it snows in Phoenix or Scottsdale it melts on impact with the ground and may stay for a couple of days on the mountain tops, sorta like Vegas.

That can be quite common for the East coast of the UK, when the wind comes from Siberia you certainly know about it and usually a good dumping of snow follows. The biggest one the media love to mention was just after WWII - I forget the date exactly, but it snowed a good deal of the UK up for about 3 months, even the far South West got a heavy covering which was just about unheard of.
