I suspect may people are mad about these little anti-military media reports and it cause knee jerk remarks it's completely normal to feel this way. Even I was upset about reading the news clip does it mean want Berkley to fall off the map? Of course not and maybe most people here don't really wish that however I could be wrong.
It just seems like anything to do with the military involves conflict with some of the the Bay area people. I've heard about how somewhere in San Francisco IIRC they were trying to get the high school ROTC programs removed from different schools, the debacle about a councilman trying to ban the Blue Angels from doing the yearly shows the list goes on...
maybe it is the political parties around the Bay Area motivating this.
Quoting Lufthansa411 (Reply 46): his has turned into a military vs. non military debate. What really should be discussed is why Berkeley did it. Did the military try and aggressively recruit at schools or on the street? During the time when I was in High School in NY right across the river from West Point the army was kicked out of the school because they would heckle students into joining. They would get students contact information and call them until they agreed to join. Finally, an agreement was reached where each branch of the military was allowed to come once every 60 school days, and were only allowed to start a conversation if a student initiated it. They were not allowed to call more than twice unless requested. We don't know all the factors that surrounded the decision. |
I know that at one time certain schools banned recruiters but I believe that the government intervened to get them back and it was solved. Regardless of why they got barred or limited to do their jobs I have to believe It is the attitude of the local people and the protesters fueling the fire this has been going on for years. Yes I know the Army has a bad rap for aggressive recruiting tactics and unfortunately the other services get labeled the same way when they recruit. The Army is in constant need of manning thats why they do what they do. I know the Air Force and Navy are still cutting back on troops but don't forget these are people with regular lives like all of us and under big pressures to perform.
