2009 Chevy Traverse "Station Wagon" Revealed

Thu Feb 07, 2008 12:32 am

Big version: Width: 464 Height: 348 File size: 30kb

Big version: Width: 590 Height: 436 File size: 36kb

The standard engine is GM's 3.6-liter V-6 with 281 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission. Standard safety features include six airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction and stability control. Other options will include a rearview camera, rear parking assist, a power liftgate; a DVD entertainment system; a navigation system; heated mirrors; and remote start. The Traverse cross-over will be built at the former Saturn assembly plant located Spring Hill, TN and will be on sale at Chevy dealers this fall.

But why do the automakers marketing geniuses call this type of vehicle (Ford Edge, GMC Acadia, Dodge Journey, etc.) a "cross-over" vehicle? They are really nothing more than a slightly taller version of a old-fashioned "station wagon"!!  boggled

Traverse, Acadia, Outlook, Enclave, they all look like big fat turds. More so then the late 90s Chrysler minivans.

Looks more like an SUV than a station wagon to me - an SUV with the new Malibu's grille.
You know the gear is up and locked when it takes full throttle to taxi to the terminal.

If I'm not mistaken, and I'm not a vehicular expert like Superfly, a cross-over vehicle is the grotesque love-child of a station wagon and a SUV.

It's cool how the first thing to contact another vehicle during a crash is the Chevy "bowtie" emblem. Likewise for the ass end. Those little gold badges must be made of some space-age material to be able to function as full-width bumpers.

I wonder how much they'll cost to repair after a crash. Stupid numbnut designers.

No worries. That cost seems to be offset by the gross amount of polished plastic on the front and back.

I was going to say Toureg or Acura MDX (?).

BTW, why a V-6, six speed automatic in this day of high gas prices? And what exactly does "crossover" mean? Back in the day, we had station wagons; "truck" was a generic name for what we call SUVs and included Wagoneers and Internationals, Suburbans and pick-ups.

Speaking of SUV's, just today I passed something SUV that I have heard absolutely NOTHING about.

Has anyone heard that SAAB is making an SUV based off the Chevy Trailblazer/GMC Envoy? I know GM used to make one for Olds, and just this year, Isuzu pulled out of all USA sales, thus killing the Ascender, but haven't heard anything about the Saab.. its known as the 9-7x, and can be seen here:

http://www.saabusa.com/

Anyway, maybe I just missed the news.. anyway, not a good move in my opinion, almost a downgrade for Saab... it's not like the Trailblazers/Envoys are bad (I own an Envoy), but I figure a Saab shouldn't be based on a mid level product. They'll never compete against BMW or Lexus doing this.

What else would you put in an SUV of this size? A 4cyl would be too small. And a 6-speed transmission is usually more fuel efficient and gives better performance than a 5-speed auto.

Saab is struggling. They are having a very, very hard time selling cars. I have a feeling GM is going to dump the brand or sell it before they invest in product development that they will never see a return on.

I think the rated mileage of those SUV's are 20/24. 24 mpg in an 8 passenger non-hybrid SUV is pretty stout.

Since GM bought SAAB, the 9-3 is heavily based on an Opel...the Astra, if I'm not mistaken.
Before the GM buyout, the 9-5 shared major body components with the Lancia Thema, a Fiat I can't remember the name of, and one other European car.
The last SAABs that were exclusively SAAB-designed were the old 99s.

8 passengers? Hardly. Only if you are hauling a bunch of amputees. Unfortunately not many manufacturers are making vehicles that will comfortably hold 7 people anymore. The 3-row SUV's are a joke, as are most new minivans.

Not only that, but it doesn't fit at all with the Saab brand. People who want a Saab are generally looking to stay away from an SUV like that. I'm a Saab fan, but I hate that car (and the 9-2X, which fortunately has gone the way of the dodo).

Not quite a car, and not quite an SUV. Just a big blob.

I love how Mazda advertises their "cross-over" like it's some kind of sports car. Right, I'm sure somebody is going to be pushing that turd to the limit on a bendy road  Yeah sure

Those where not meant for speed. They were meant to haul around lots of people and cargo.
You can fit those silly little German wagons in the back of those older American full-sized wagons.
Best of all, they had style and a very comfortable ride quality. Many shared the same platforms and powertrains as luxury cars such as the Lincoln Continental, Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham and Chrysler Imperal.

Dodge missed the mark with the Magnum. They should have pitched that car as an SUV alternative. It gets way better mileage than an SUV and has excellent performance.

My biggest gripe with the Magnum is the roof line. If you over about 5'10", sitting in that last row man not be a good idea. I've got more head room in my Stratus than there is in that last row on the Magnum. If they would have kept the roof line straight the entire distance, it really would have looked like the new-school retro version of a mid-60s Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth station wagon.

They day I fork out the money for that, which could have been spent on a fine German or Japanese product, is the day I shoot my foot. It's just a polished up Ford.

Suit yourself! Admittedly, I'm as biased towards fine Sweedish automobiles as you seem to be towards fine German/Japanese products. My family drives two cars, a 3.2 XC90 and a T6 S80. I think that the Ford Freestyle (now the Taurus X?) was based off of the XC90's platform, and not the other way around! Ditto with the S80's platform. So I guess you can say that Ford's are just watered-down Volvos...  Wink

Clearly I am an outspoken Volvo cheerleader. I'll definitely take the S80 against anything comparable the Germans can put up!

I've given up on Ford's name game. First after telling us the Taurus would end in 2006/7, it was the Five Hundred and Freestyle. Then out of no where the Five Hundred becomes the new Taurus and the Freestyle a Taurus X. Say what? Why not just end the old Taurus with the intro of the "new" one back in 2005? Why change the name of the Freestyle? Stupid if you ask me...

And it's a bloody shame, too. The (perceived) lack of direction has really bugged me with regards to Ford and their lineup. Not to mention that they failed to aggressively market a great car in the Freestyle (we leased one for the previous two years and loved it). Seated seven and got over 20 MPG if you drove it right, and all the while with an MSRP in the 25k-30k range. Ford could've produced a winner, but alas...

I guess I am the only one who likes the looks of that Chevy Traverse. Looks like a really nice car to me.

My biggest gripe with the Magnum is the roof line. If you over about 5'10", sitting in that last row man not be a good idea.
If they would have kept the roof line straight the entire distance, it really would have looked like the new-school retro version of a mid-60s Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth station wagon.

Same here. I agree. THe roof-line is the biggest problem with those. I don't liked the 'chopped-top' look anyways.

Looks like 15 other vehicles already on the market. I hope GM isn't dumping a lot of money marketing this thing.
