Tonights Double Feature: Zero Hour And Airplane!

Sat Feb 09, 2008 7:14 am

Since I have no life, I am doing what I do on most Friday nights, staying home and watching a couple of movies. I went by best buy and found out that they had a film there that was on my short list. Zero Hour with Dana Andrews and Sterling Hayden.

For those of you that aren't familiar with this 1957 film about a former Canadian RAF pilot named Ted Stryker, who's traumatized by a botched raid he lead in WWII. Anyway he can't hold a job and his wife has just run off with their son named Joey. So anyway he goes to the airport to catch the cross-canada charter DC-4 that his wife is running away on to try and work things out. As some of you might have guessed he doesn't have the fish on the airplane.

I knew that the Zanuks had parodied this film when they made t only took until about the first 15 minutes of the film to really realize how much they ripped off of the older film. That and the shock when I realized that they mentioned "Regina" in a film from 1957, that was the era of the husband and wife in twin beds for gods sake!

Anybody else ever see something and be shocked at the level it was ripped something else. The only thing I can compare it to is watching Citizen Kane and how many times the Simpsons ripped that film off for episodes.

Anybody else out there have any other good examples.

My understanding was that Airplane! really ripped off Zero Hour, down to the same dialog lines.

How weird was it to watch?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Want aviation disaster cinematic film noir from way back in the day? Well,
Big version: Width: 462 Height: 150 File size: 17kb
says check out Jet Over The Atlantic! Over the top 50s melodrama with ugly dowdy women dressed like aging matrons.

That Jet has big ass propellers!

Oh it was very weird, and not just from the fact that the original is a Canadian film, so all the city references are different. But you can tell that in Airplane all the writers did was take the lines and then in a lot of cases inserted their own wise-arse comments.

Not really, there wasn't any mention of Gladiator movies when Joey got to visit the cockpit!

Despite that, i still think Airplane! was 100 times funnier than Zero Hour ever was( Zero Hour was just poor over the top B movie melodrama), though when i first saw zero hour i did think it was weird the almost word for word copying.

Well Zero hour was never intended to be a comedy, it was a serious drama.

And so the storyline of Airplane! was nothing more than a parody of that, with some smattering of other airplane disaster films (i.e. Airport 1975)

Airplane! is one of the funniest movies ever made, and will forever be one of the holy grails of comedy!

Yep! I still enjoy watching airplane. I may try to see Zero Hour just to get that feeling of dejavu.

Well the history is a bit more intersting.

As you know Airplane! is a parody of Zero-Hour. Zero-Hour and Aiport are both based on Alex Hailey books.

And George Kennedy turned down a role in Airplane!
