Is There A Way To Find Out Where An IP Is?

Sun Feb 10, 2008 11:57 pm

Hi I was wondering:
A, Is there a way to figure out where an IP address is coming from?
B, What is someones IP lets say from an email or IM?

You can find it in the header of the e-mail, of course you need to know how to display it in whatever you use to read e-mails. I have no experience with instant messaging.

Message headers

Message headers log the progress of a message across different servers. Select your mail service or application below for instructions on finding headers for a message.

For Gmail:
1. Log in to your Gmail account.
2. Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
3. Click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top-right of the message pane.
4. Select Show original.

The full headers will appear in a new window.

Pfff... those things are totally unreliable.

My IP address currently shows me in central South Korea!! When in fact, I am in southern Alabama for additional training.

And when I was stationed in Iraq, I was apparently also in New Zealand, Southern United States, UK, and Fiji. Why? I dunno. Maybe it has something to do with being on the defense network. Either way, IP trackers are not reliable.

I'm willing to bet the US military (for operational security reasons) throw some curves in there but depending on how your connection is configured it is entirely possible that your connection in Alabama somehow routes through SK.

I would agree that IP2Location is dicey but for the general public internet access it is quite accurate.

From an IM, depending which program you use, you can send them a file that is quite large. The got to your command prompt and run netstat to see all open connections.

Try this one: http://www.ip-adress.com/.

Ummmm how about 'don't try that one'...I entered one of my IPs....and I've never even set foot, driven near that area of Los Angeles, although I'm not a resident of Los Angeles.

I guess it's good for getting within a 10-20 mile radius of a fixed location..but that's about it. In the LA Basin..that could be 100+ different communities

The result depends on network topology first and foremost. To my knowledge there is no technical way to give accurate results at this time. The LA region may have the nearest externally visible node of your ISP.
