The Longest Drive

Mon Feb 11, 2008 12:34 am

It's a long and awful trip from Trenton to Toronto in a limousine or a hearse carrying a loved one or a comrade-in-arms. But this is what those who make that terrible trip see out the windows of their vehicles.

See the photos on the link below.

This is an awesome tribute to our fallen soldiers!

This is the last salute to our fallen soldiers in Afghanistan. The "Highway of Heroes" is the 172km Hwy 401 stretch from CFB Trenton to Toronto. It earned its name because its the route fallen troops take before heading to the Centre for Forensic Sciences and returned to their families. Since 2002 thousands have stood on overpasses wearing red and holding signs, waiting for the the motorcade to pass. It lets the families know that we're thinking of them and it means so much to them. For the crowd, they feel connected to the family for a few seconds.

While the website linked is limited in it's description of the reason, some web research may help.
Trenton, Ont. is a site of a Canadian Air Force Base where the remains of Canadian soldiers who are killed in military action in Afghanistan are brought to. After processing at the mortuary at the base, the soldier's bodies are brought to Toronto for further preparations and transport to their homes by funeral cars on a major highway known as route # 401.

I believe a number of Canadian forces members 4?) were killed in an action in Afghanistan last year (2007). A local police and military veteran organization wanted to have a salute an overpass over the 401 to salute the hero soldiers. Apparently the salute to the fallen solders got a lot of attention to other police and veteran groups in the region and spontaneously a massive salute to the fallen soldiers developed as depicted in the pictures.

I must say, it is a very moving tribute. Apparently though, the Canadian media gave it very little attention due to the opposition of many Canadians supporting the USA in Afghanistan (and by extension without soldiers, supporting the USA led war in Iraq).

This happens every time a Canadian solider dies in combat recently. The body is flown to CFB Trenton I believe and then driven down the newly named Highway of Heroes (a section of the 401 between Trenton and Toronto) where the body is examined at the coroner's office.

This was probably just for one casualty as I can only see one hearse. I have gone a few times to stand along the route driven to pay my respects.

It's very humbling to be there when the police, fireman, paramedics and citizens stand along the route to honor the fallen soldier.
It may be too early to drink scotch... But it is NEVER too early to think about it...

wow those are amazing pictures.

What strikes me is the proportion of casualties.

78 casualties out a force of 2500 Canadians
0 casualties out of 1070 Australians

I know both forces are in the South, but are the Canadians in a much more dangerous area? Is there a reason? Or is it just blind luck?
Everyday is a gift…… but why does it have to be a pair of socks?
