I don't know how much this is on the national and international news, but the LAPD SWAT unit, the first ever on any sort of scale, had its first officer killed in the line of duty last week. Randal Simmons, the officer who was killed, has been described as such an amazing person that it would take me an hour to type all the good works he has done, both on and off duty.
His funeral is going on currently, and is so big that they had to put in in the "Faith Dome" in South Los Angeles, which holds 10,000 people, and it is apparently overflowing. The people there include Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who delivered an incredibly moving eulogy, Police Chief William Bratton, the Governor and officers from all over the world.
He died trying to save 5 hostages in a shoot out.
