Debit Card Debacle!

Tue Feb 19, 2008 7:13 pm

Hey Guys!

I'm in abit of a pickle! Basically, I have a debit card I rarely use and have forgotten the pin number for it to access the account via a cash machine. I usually use this debit card for my online transactions. Further to this the signature is smudged (the space they provide doesn't like my damn pens!)

I don't have the pin number to it and therefore cannot use a cash machine to take money out. I signed into the online banking service and there is money in the account I want to pull out in cash.

Can I just walk into the branch, show my debit card and my drivers license with my picture and my citizen card (also with my picture) and take the cash out?

Regards!

I have one card which, like you, I don't have a clue what the pin is on it. When I want to take money out I just transfer it into an account which I know the pin number of and do it that way - if it's the same bank for both accounts then it should transfer instantly.

Yes you can withdraw cash over the counter, but I would take another form of ID with you i.e utility bill just in case.

Yes - that ought to be possible even without your debit card.

I'd just take my ID with me, but seeing that you Brits don't really have those, a driver's license (and possibly passport, to be safe) should do it.

If you can access your account online, that means you can obtain your account number. That with ID, is all you need to withdraw money in person from the bank. However you can also have your pin reset, providing your account number and adecuate ID.

If the signature is smudged, it may be time to replace the card. Go into the bank where the card was issued and tell them what you've told us.....

Well, at least right here in Argentina (customer of Standard Bank), they clear up the Debit Card pin in the accounts originating branch and you have 24hrs to enter a new one.

That simple, I don't know how to go through that hassle of sending it by mail and that crap.  Smile

Oh, and yes, it's your account and unless you've signed up for an electronic-only transaction plan, there's no impediment for you to go on to the counters and get money.

That said, ID and account number are really necessary.  Smile

Banking in the UK has always amused me. Back in 1982 we were already using ATMs here, I went to the UK on holiday and my dad gave me some money in his Yorkshire Building Society account. I went to the branch in Leeds, all well and good but I must open an account. No problem there.

"Where do you think you will be drawing money?"
"I don't know, wherever I need it"
"Oh, because we need to send a signature card to the branches where you want to draw. Without that you can't draw money"
"WTF???"

I went to the teller, drew the lot and closed the account.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Oh yeah...same year, but in Manchester (Sale/Salford area to be precise)...I'd moved up there for a while and was going out to look for a job. I had brought American Express travller's checks with me....for shopping, transport, meals etc......and was told in more than one place "we don't take American Express"....WTF? I had to go to a TRAVEL AGENCY to cash a traveller's check.

Talk about Bizarro World....

Yes, American Express isn't a widely used card in the UK - its available, but its definitely one of the smaller cards over here. Whats bizarre about that?

You are talking about a Building Society in 1982 - they were most certainly not acting as banks then, and were primarily very local in scope so the signature card at each branch makes sense.

If you asked that question of me, the card number would be of absolutely no value to you.....cause there's next to nothing in the account  wink
