Official 2008 American Idol Thread

Wed Feb 20, 2008 4:53 am

Shocked to see that it hasn't been started yet....so here goes with round 1 tonight, guys taking the stage.
Much like the preliminaries being changed around, tonight was no different as the guys had to choose songs from the 60s rather than picking what they wanted to sing...

The talent is definitely higher than last year and to their credit, the belief is that they tried to eliminate any chance that a Sanjaya repeat would occur. Up until tonight, I think they had succeeded, however one may have slipped through!

Top 12 Guys, ranked after tonight:
1. David Archuleta: 17 years old and smoked thru Smokey Robinson's "Shop Around"
2. Robbie Carrico: Has a little Wow factor going, rocker look with a popstar mentality.
3. Michael Johns: Channeled Jim Morrison on "Light My Fire". Will see how the Aussie does as the competition goes on
4. Jason Castro: Only contestant that played an instrument tonight. His "Daydream" woke me up as the middle part of the show was dragging on...
5. David Hernandez: First out, held his own (not literally)..
6. David Cook: Good song choice, another rocker
7. Chikezie Eze: Realize he's the only African-American male this year? Thought he was okay tonight, needs to sing and not be confrontational
8. Jason Yeager: He was called David (easy mistake!). Sang "Moon River" to showcase voice, but not much else
9. Garrett Haley: Think he's in this as a bit of a lark. Wouldn't be missed, but his Neil Sedaka song was done fairly
10. Colton Berry: The Ellen DeGeneres look-alike was still too theatric with his Elvis "Suspicious Minds"
11. Danny Noriega: Sanjaya, part deaux. The hair has already changed and he's too flamboyant. Sings better than Sanjaya did, but if he gets into this competition any further, he's going to start looking more and more like Sanjaya.
12. Luke Menard: Jim Croce gone bad! Big trouble for the Hoosier

Thursday's departees: Luke Menard, Garrett Haley (with hopes that Danny goes, but think the votefortheworst.com folks will be all over him and early!)

Cheers

Josiah, if I remember his name right, may have made it through to the finals until he pulled a strange stunt where he told the band thanks, but he was going to sing a capella. Then he proceeded to sing miserably. When the final cut came, he was let go.

Don't particularly like the show because I think Cowell is a bit of a pr*ck, Paula can't say anything constructive and if I hear Randy say 'dawg' one more time I'll puke, but if I was a betting woman my money would be on the Australian. He's got something, a certain presence that can only improve over the next few (long) months.

I don't watch this show much anymore, but the one thing that is consistent is that Cowell's observations are almost always spot-on and accurate.

Girls performed last night and it's pretty apparent who the stars are versus the also-rans...
Again, the 60s were the theme and the show's first hour contestants were for the most part, nervous, sick and altogether not that great, spare one. The second half of the show was where business started to pick up.

Top 12 Girl ranks:
1. Ramiele Malubay. Little on the outside, Big Belter on the inside. Nice!
2. Syesha Mercado. Battled through no voice in Hollywood, voice was strong last night.
3. Alaina Whitaker. 17th birthday is today. Early gift to us was her singing. Carrie's looks, but as my wife noted during the show, Carrie never sounded that good. Only one in the first hour with a chance to get to the end.
4. Asia'h Epperson. Nice performance, under the radar during Hollywood week.
5. Carly Smithson. She's a known professional. Hype is a good word to describe her, needs to be that much better.
6. Alexandrea Lushington. Again, not seen much in Hollywood, but had a nice performance last night.
7. Amanda Overmayer. I sat there saying "What was That?!" but suited her rocker/blues style. Compared to Gina last year, she's way above her level.
8. Kady Malloy. Has the looks, has the voice, has our hometown vote, now...show some personality!
9. Brooke White. Sang nice, but my wife says she's already playing the Melinda Doolittle part. You're good, admit it, stop playing the "I am?" game.
10. Kristy Lee Cook. First out, with bronchitis. A nice girl, but doesn't seem to have much more than average performances in her.
11. Joanne Borgella. Thought she sang the entire song a key too high.
12. Amy Davis. Off key all song. Looks like she's Jimmy Kimmel's sister.

Tonight's departees: Amy Davis/Kristy Lee Cook. Amy may be the biggest lock of the entire 24 at this time to leave.

Wow, I didn't realise how close they were broadcasting the show in the UK behind the US showings this year. It's being broadcast only a day after the US showing as far as I can work out. I only watched the guys show but there were some impressive performances for the first show, and some not so good ones. The judges influeneces on the voting audience will be as key as ever. Cowell blatently ripped straight into the ones he wants to get rid of. I shall keep watching with interest.

My favorites so far:

Guys

1. David Archuleta: Great strong voice, nice (sweet) personality
2. Michael Johns:

Quoting A340Spotter (Thread starter):
Channeled Jim Morrison

Absolutely!! By the middle of his performance, he even started to resemble Jim Morrison....eerie!
3. Jason Castro: He sang well, and actually looked like he was enjoying himself! I was surprised.

Girls
1. Amanda Overmayer. to paraphrase the judges: she is authentic, and unique. Great, raspy voice
2. Ramiele Malubay.

Quoting A340Spotter (Reply 5):

I concur!
3. Brooke White. Nice throwback to the Carol King, Carly Simon genre. Dry sense of humor too.

Quick synopsis as I've just finished watching the shows well after the fact:

Top 5 guys:
1. David Archuleta. Hands down, the early favorite.
2. David Hernandez. Great rendition of Papa was a Rolling Stone.
3. David Cook. Good performance and good choice to play the guitar.
4. Michael Johns. To sing Lindsay Buckingham takes talent, and he has it.
5. Chikezie Eze. Good comeback from last week.

Picks to depart this week: Luke Menard, Jason Yeager. Didn't like Danny's song, but think he has a growing cult.

Top 5 girls: Harder this week as most of them were off on their low notes, bringing the second half of the show down.
1. Syesha Mercado. Safe, but good.
2. Carly Smithson. Looking back on the show, really the only one that hit all the notes. Almost a bit over the top though
3. Brooke White. Nailed Carly Simon (wait, that sounds wrong...or good!)
4. Alaina Whitaker. Too bland this week, strength last week keeps her up here.
5. Ramiele Malubay. See Alaina. Could have really jumped into the lead but went too safe.

Picks to depart this week: Amanda Overmayer, Kady Malloy (which pains me, but blondes from Houston don't fare well on this show). Otherwise, Alexandrea Lushington would go. Didn't get the praise about Asia'h to end the show either as she missed the key first note in her song.

Cheers

I do not watch AI religiously, but I did watch the male performances. All I can say is that the David dude gets votes from all the young horny girls. There is no doubt he has an amazing voice. Truly beautiful. But at the same time I'm 100% sure girls vote for him because they think he is a hot, young, innocent guy with a humble/quiet personality (from Murray, UT, maybe Mormon?). If you think about what age group texts the most. Teenage girls fall into that category. Voila!

American Idol used to be a real standout, but TV is so saturated with reality shows and this year's contestants really don't stand out at all. I find myself switching channels halfway through the broadcast, because the show has gotten really stale. The judges are totally predictable, and Ryan Seacrest is just plain boring.

I'm waiting for FX series "The Shield" and "Rescue Me" to come back on the air.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Was away during the results last week and finally got caught up yesterday before the guy's performed. Alaina's departure was the earliest any of the possible final 6 contestants has been in memory. Shocking, but we move on...

Guys performed last night and it's pretty apparent that the final 6 guys will be amongst the strongest this show will have seen. The two that leave Thursday should know they got beat by some pretty good opponents...

Ranks:
1. David. Take your pick as each one of the 3 could fill this spot each week.
4. Michael Johns. The Aussie is looking older as the competition goes on, which may mean less votes. Still good though
5. Jason Castro. Stoner vote is his
6. Danny Noriega. Not too strong this week, but he has to have the Sanjaya following by now.

Going home guess: Chikezie Eze and Luke Menard (if he stays, the votefortheworst.com folks must be involved)

Girls singing the 80s tonight...

I saw something in the news that one of these dudes worked in a gay strip club? Bet that was not on his application!

Heard this after posting my above ranks. David Hernandez, who is among the current favorites on the male side (no pun intended), apparently did some stripper work in the past. In previous years, he probably would have been eliminated and maybe, Thursday's show will find a way to have him "eliminated" via the "voting process", however it does seem that with Carly's previous record deal and Michael being of Australian descent that the talent is more what the show is about versus their pasts.

Or the fact that Carly was previously signed to 19 and Michael Johns had a development deal with an Australian subsidiary of 19 several years ago. It's a fixed fight, folks.

Girls sang last night and one things apparent...the guys are stronger this year. I will say that the judges comments last night were doing a lot to sway people into voting the 6 they want to see, or the producers want to see, carry on into the final 12...for ratings, of course!

Ranks:
1. Brooke White. Consistency is her strength. Great rendition of Love is a Battlefield.
2. Carly Smithson. Again, her previous professional singing keeps her atop the standings.
3. Syesha Mercado. Predictably Whitney. Show ran out of time so comments were minimal.
4. Kristi Lee Cook. Probably the most improved but with no Alaina around, the second best blonde.
5. Ramiele Malubay. Bland again, in fact I don't think she has the strong voice that she showed a few weeks back.
6. Kady Malloy. Sang her best and was given no real positive comment. Honest about Alaina's dismissal last week a plus
7. Amanda Overmayer. I thought she half-assed the song and was trying to go but the judges pumped her up. The lack of smile I think was due to wanting to be voted off.
8. Asia'h Epperson. Her Whitney sounded nasally, or whiny to me yet the judges raved. What show were they watching?

Prediction tonight: Kady and Asia'h. First two out and while Kady was better, the judges are against her. Asia'h went first and was hardly Whitney and the fans will react.

Carly Plant-son? It's not her previous professional singing that's keeping her there; it's 'TPTB' that are keeping her there.

Bit quiet in this thread which is a surprise given past years. Will post this and see how things go...

Top 12 sang Beatles songs last night and some surprised, some rose to the occasion and some just plain stunk...

Ranks after last night:
1. David Cook. His rocker take on Eleanor Rigby was cool.
2. Carly Smithson. Finally hit on song selection, voice sounds strong.
3. Chikezie. Jaw dropping performance. Loved the arrangement and it was memorable, while Syesha, who opened was not
4. Brooke White. Let it Be was performed properly, behind the piano keys. Consistent as anyone in the competition.
5. Jason Castro. Simple, safe, soft. Probably needs to sing a happy song next week to get judge's love.
6. David Archuleta. Uh-oh, the first major words forgotten this year. Not a good idea to try and sing like Stevie.
7. Michael Johns. For once, didn't sing like Jim Morrison. Again, happier song selections help him.
8. Amanda Overmyer. Improved her looks this week with more blonde streaks, improved her singing too. Not bad.
9. Syesha Mercado. Like Ramiele, was strong to start the season but seems to have settled.
10. David Hernandez. Was the weakest of the guys, needed a strong performance coming off of the stripper stories.
11. Ramiele Malubay. Bo-ring. Looked like she was singing at a funeral.
12. Kristi Lee Cook. Country version of 8 Days a Week was horrible. She sang on 33, the band was at 66.

Prediction: Bottom 3, if they do that...Syesha, David H. and Ramiele with Ramiele going home. Paula mentioned Kristi had a huge fanbase which will probably keep her around for at least another week, but no more country like that!
