What Is The Greatest Movie Ever?

Thu Feb 21, 2008 10:19 am

What do you think the greatest movie very produced was?

For me, it is:
1. Airplane
2. Blazing Saddles a very close second.

That's very hard... some very good movies out there, just to name a few from a huge list that I believe are great classics:

- Titanic
- Gone with the Wind
- Sound of Music
- Jurassic Park
- The Godfather

For me it is basically impossible to name one movie as "the greatest".

It is like asking what is the longest piece of string ever?

How do you define the "greatest" movie? Should it be the most popular, the most profitable, the most topical, the most thought-provoking, the most spectacular, or simply your favourite film ever?

For me, I think it is absurd to pick one film which is "the best".

American Beauty, Casablanca, North by Northwest, or any Cary Grant film for that matter, Taxi Driver, Lock Stock, loads more just too many to name.

Without a doubt the best movie ever is WALL STREET.

Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind.

And greed -- you mark my words -- will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA.

No truer words have ever been spoken.

Of course it is always going to be subjective (there are movies out there that most people who saw it love but I am just not interested in watching because they are not my stile), but here are a few of my choices.

Quoting ArniePie (Reply 4):

Gun to the head and name just one, that would be my choice.

Quoting ArniePie (Reply 4):
-Dr Strangelove

One of my favorite comedies, for sure.

Besides these, a recent movie which I just loved was "Blood Diamond". It is probably the only movie I can say that changed the way I view the world, philosophically-speaking.

I'll agree with that. The Sum of All Fears was an excellent book, but the movie was really terrible. Since I hear that they're doing Without Remorse, I hope that they do it better than TSoAF. And I also hope that they don't sanitize it, because the gritty details made the written work good.

I'm reading Without Remorse right now. So far pretty good. I'm up the part where John Kelley just arrived at Eglin to begin training.

I thought The Sum of All Fears was a good movie till I read the book and I realized how butchered it was. They don't even blow up the same city (Baltimore in the movie; Denver in the book) and in the movie, they have the President being rushed out of the stadium because they suspect something's up while in the book he's not even at the game but watching it on tv at Camp David and when the signal goes out, he assumes it's technical difficulties. In the movie, they also use Neo-Nazis as the terrorists rather than Arabs. Gah- bad on so many levels.

I'll be curious to see if they make Red Storm Rising into a movie. It would be a good movie if they followed the book for once.

You'll love it. I should reread it, because I think I read it back in eighth grade...I started reading the Clancy books in sixth grade with Rainbow Six, and so far I've read all but the non-fiction ones.

If you want another good book similar to Tom's, read "Red Phoenix" by Larry Bond.

Red Storm Rising would be a good movie as long as they kept the details correct. As you mentioned, the jumps away from the plot line that they've taken have been pretty radical. Anyway, the book was set a good while ago now, but with Putin the way he is...  duck

If (and that's a big IF) you could get hollywood to park their collective egos at the door, this movie could be made. Think along the lines of 'The Longest day' and 'A Bridge Too far', a truly international AllStar cast and a movie of epic proportions.
One can only dream.

Red Storm Rising was published in 1986 - I read it when it first came out, while sitting EWO alert on the KC-135. Back then, it wasn't just some interesting novel, but a story about something we thought about happening every day. And yes, that was back when Clancy was good.

That was almost a year and a half before my birth. Which doesn't mean you're old, it means you're experienced. Although I know it's a thriller, did you wonder if something like it could actually happen? It's kind of sad that we have to deal with scum bag terrorists now instead of nations.

I think most people consider Citizen Kane the greatest movie ever made.

It was superb for a number of reasons:

1) Some of the most revolutionary use of cinematography ever done.
2) Superb use of lighting effects.
3) Superb use of actors that were mostly unknowns in Hollywood (Orson Welles used essentially the actors that were part of the famous Mercury Theater group that did many well-known radio plays).
4) Almost revolutionary use of "flashback" as a storytelling device.

In short, Citizen Kane tremendously advanced the art of moviemaking, especially by 1941 standards. If it weren't for the vendetta William Randolph Hearst and Hollywood gossip writer friend Hedda Hopper (who was a close friend of the Hearst family) Citizen Kane should have won at least 6 to 7 Oscars.
