I'll have to agree with you on the Jaguar. At one time I owned a 1970 E-Type Roadster. What surprised me about them is how heavy they were. And the fittings were of very high quality. The only problem was the Lucas electrics. But there is a conversion to a GM electrical system that solves most of the problems. It worked like a charm.
Plus, it's a very powerful "babe magnet".  bigthumbsup

That's quite a common problem with many British cars of that era. If I ever do get myself a British car of that era (For some strange reason, the Triumph Stag is my dream British car.), I'll definitely make sure the electrics are good.

Just a comment on the Citroen DS series.
They first came out in the mid 1950's, a very advanced car for its time. I had the chance to ride in one for a trip one time. I'll admit that they are very comfortable. A buddy of mine collected them. He had three or four of them.
But as comfortable as they were, there were also right up there in the "strange" car category. And also so typically French. Usually in the states the artsy-fartsy kind of crowd were the ones who normally bought these.
For some reason French autos haven't done well in the U.S. I had a Renault R8 in high school for a short time. Another very comfortable car but was a little on the strange side as well.

I think it would be easier to make a list by era, especially given how subjective this can be.

Some of my personal favorites are, in no particular order:

1966 Oldsmobile Toronado
1967 Cadillac Eldorado
Any of the Bill Mitchell penned mid to late 60s GM full sizers (Impala, Electra, Rocket 88). I think the Mopar full sizers of similar vintage (67-68), especially the slab sided ones still look good today.

The 1956 Continental Mark II I think is a very interesting design, and uncharacteristic among the sea of chrome laden cars in the 1950s.

Pretty much anything Alfa Romeo, particularly the mid 60s to 70s GTV (pre-Alfetta)
The current Alfa Brerea and 8C make me tingle inside as well.

The Volvo P1800

I certainly have a lot of appreciation for most French designs. There is a unique style that cannot be confused with anything else. I think the current line of Citroens gets at that.

There isn't much out currently that I find stunning. Certainly not the pig that the 6-series is. Only thing that really does it for me is the new Cadillac CTS. I fell in love with it when I saw its debut at NAIAS last year, and still think it is among the best looking cars on the market at the moment.

This is for those who think we don't build beautiful cars in America anymore. I give you the Panoz Esperante:

http://www.panozauto.com/EsperanteDetails.htm

This is my pick for a modern beauty, even over the Jaguar XK, which can be considered to be a spiritual successor to the E-Type since it replaced the XJS which replaced the E-Type. Plus Panoz Auto Development is based in the Atlanta area, so I got to gives some props to the local guys.......

Certainly if you will notice my list I give plenty of kudos to classic and modern American cars. Though I am not too keen on the styling of the Panoz.... not that it is a bad car. The success of Panoz in motorsports, like ALMS says a lot. Especially for a small company.

The 1st generation Mustang is a classic. BUT..... the modernized GT500 "Elanor" is over done and ugly looking. I prefer the smaller 64 1/2 to 66 models. So if I had to pick a Shelby it would be the earlier GT.350.... barring that I like the 66 GT Fastback. Smaller, lighter and more fitting with the original pony car image.

I agree although my personal U.S. favorites are early 60s GM models, about 1960 through 1964 (except Cadillac...I never liked tailfins, but at least they got smaller ever year from '60 through '64 until they finally disappeared in '65!). The '65 GM full-size redesign was pretty good but it made them look a little too bulky and heavy-looking, although that was probably the intent in those days when bigger was better. Many of those early '60s GM models also still look good today. Example -- '63 Pontiac Grand Prix.

And GM didn't only do a good job on big cars during that period. Another winner is the final 1965 redesign of the Chevy Corvair. It also still looks very good 43 years later.

For sheer shock value, you can't get past the Adams Probe 16: Only 3 were ever made, it was too low (34" from the ground to the top of the car) to have any doors and the pedal arrangement was out of this world - but it was a film star!

.. for everything else, I have to agree with the Aston DB9 further up. Just a damn gorgeous car!

I think that is the best looking French car ever made but not the best looking car ever made.

For me it would be my car.
1977 Lincoln Continental Town Car.
Lots of attention to detail in the styling and construction of this car. Everything from the body down to the cigar lighter is styled. Lots of interior space and very comfortable. Ideal for long road trips. I especially love the front grille's vertical lines, concealed headlights, horizontal tail reflector, opera windows, low belt-line and the symmetrical styling. If the car was sliced at the B-pillar, the front & back of the car would be of equal size and same design. I like to see that in a car, especially in a 4-door sedan.
I can't stand the sporty low in front, high in back styling of most cars today.

Also, the 1977-1979 Lincoln Mark V
These cars are just so sexy!  drool

Ok, I mine as well put on my flame suit now but I think the 1987 Chrysler LeBaron convertible was also one of the best 'looking' cars ever made.
It has a lot of styling cues from the larger Lincolns of the 1970s and early 1980s but in a small package with a convertible top. Notice the vertical chrome grille, concealed headlights as well as the horizontal rear reflector? I like to see that in a car. Interior design was great too. The problem was the cheap materials used. You would only notice this when you had to replace something on the instrument panel.
For a small car, these car had the most comfortable seats. That was due to the think & rich Corinthian leather.
These were great cars until you start the engine and try to drive it. These cars were trouble prone, especially with the weak 2.2-turbo engine.

That's quite a common problem with many British cars of that era. If I ever do get myself a British car of that era (For some strange reason, the Triumph Stag is my dream British car.), I'll definitely make sure the electrics are good.

Yes it is. As a practical matter the only thing you can change would be the Lucas internally regulated alternator.

You can sub it with any number of good alternatives-SEV-Motorola, Delco, or Bosch come to mind. You might even be able to sub parts of the ignition system like the coil and maybe the distributor as well. On the other hand some were positive ground which complicates things.

But the rest of the stuff-switches, controls, and so on-you're pretty much stuck with them-and a lot of that stuff was not even made by Lucas-it was Smiths or proprietary, like the stuff that was used on a lot of English Fords.

In a number of cases it was tie interrelatedness of the components that was the source of problems. A famous one on the MGB was when they went to the pre-engage starter. The ignition switch would hang, the engine would fire with the starter still engaged and it would buzz the guts right out of it. So there you are, having to explain to a guy why you're not going to give him another hundred buck starter because that wasn't the problem in the first place. Another one was the relatedness of the Smiths tach and the Lucas Opus ignition system on the 12 cylinder E-type.

Don't even get me started on the motorcycle stuff from Lucas.

I sold this stuff for a number of years and that's what I remember.

Oh, and if you have a Lotus Elan with a generator, do something about it soon because you can make the armature explode by revving it.
If you believe in coincidence, you haven't looked close enough-Joe Leaphorn

Delage

Delahaye

Both are otherwise perfectly unremarkable car brands, but absolutely stunning to look at.

Also, anything with a body by Figoni et Falaschi- The absolute epitomy of fluid, sensual curves as applied to something as ordinary as an automobile.
