A Favor To Ask Of All Members

Thu Feb 28, 2008 4:53 am

Please click in the following site, and help underprivelaged women receive a free mammogram.

http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=2

I ask on behalf of my sister-in-law, who, yesterday, had a partial masectomy, and had two lymph nodes removed, as she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The surgury went well, but not the tough part begins-recovery.

If just a click on the website helps a woman get a mammography, it's worth it.

Thank you.

I'm sorry to hear that Falcon. Thankfully she made it through the surgery safely, hopefully all goes well with recovery.

And a very noble thing you're doing.

But I gotta say, I'm sure there are a few anetters who would personally be willing to help out with this cause.

Happy to oblige. My mom has battled cancer in one form or another for years, and is now in her late 70's and (touch wood) doing well.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

So has my mother-in-law (not related to this sister-in-law). Actually, she had a very similar surgery has my sis-in-law, and she's doing pretty well these days.

Falcon,

Sorry to hear of your sister-in-laws battle. I wish her a speedy recovery.

I have clicked on the link you provided and have also forwarded the link to the HA flight attendants website so the link will now be accessed by the roughly 1000 HNL based HA flight attendants that I know will be glad to help.

The message you were about to post is too short and probably not of any higher value to the topic at hand. You should think long and hard before posting a message in this forum and make it detailed and a valuable addition to the topic discussed.

Avoid posting "Me Too" messages. These are messages that are posted by people who agree to a point being discussed and post a one liner, "me too!", "Good post Jim!", "I disagree" or similar message. This takes up time as readers must sort through these messages which have no real value to the group at large. Any message containing nothing more than a line or two of text is probably not worth posting.

If you have an opinion on a topic, you should in detail express why you have the opinion and what made you come to that conclusion.

Your post should be relevant to the topic discussed.

I clicked on it 5 times, so that's five mammograms. My auntie was lost from ductal carcinoma. It was a fast-spreading cancer and it was too late by the time she got the diagnosis. There some pictures of of some forms of breast cancer on the wikipedia page. One of the pictures is less than pleasant, so look at your own risk. But it's work getting to know more about it, because it can affect men as well.

I did it.

However, I have to convey something: Please understand that mammograms are not sufficient diagnostic tools for cancer detection, especially in women younger than around 50. It is imperative for women to self-examine their breasts on a regular basis. That is really the only way to detect lumps before they become serious issues.

Basically,a premenopausal breast is more fibrous, and the mammogram doesn't "read" as well -- so it's more likely something can be missed.

This was explained to me a few years ago by a cancer surgeon who gave me a biopsy for a small lump my doctor found in my annual check up. (It was benign.)

So encourage your wives, girlfriends, friends and sisters to self-examine themselves (and please don't turn it into sexual innuendo).

All the best to your sister-in-law, Falcon! One of my closest friends had Stage 4 breast cancer with a full masectomy on one breast in 1999 and is doing fantastic!

My wife had a breast cancer scare in late 2006. The mamogram she got showed a couple of specks no bigger than a speck of dust in an arrangement that worried the radiologist (honestly when I looked at the x-ray I had no idea what they were concerned about it was so small). Due to the position of the area of concern, along the chest wall the biopsy was not done through a fine needle extraction but by an open procedure. Thank God that all ended up fine, the specs were not cancer but it was a scary couple of weeks.

I've clicked on it and added a recurring reminder to my to-do list to visit the site every day.

I wish your family good luck and will pray from you all tonight.

Hate to provide a downer, but has anyone check out the urban legend web site?
Here is what I found out: it takes 45,000 clicks = 1 mammogram, the site provides funding for approximately 1.3 mammograms a day or otherwise 474 a year based on 365 days. Only 75% (a low figure for a charity) goes to the National Breast Cancer Foundation the rest of the money goes to the company running the web site.
I would suggest that if you want a feel good feeling donate, or otherwise look for a local charity that will provide more bang for your buck.

Done here, too.

Someone close to me had to fight that shortly after I was born. Thankfully, she did just fine afterwards.

With all of our medical advancements, it's confounding how we can't successfully eliminate cancer.
